Swap Package No. 2/2023 is on its way

Hermes told me a package was on its way last Friday. Nothing has arrived yet...🙄
So I guess it’s not because we’re impatient, Ina.

April Projects 2023, Part 2: the Crazypatterns Handicraft Group

Dear Monika,

I just read about the terrible thing that happened. I’m so glad the little one is already feeling better. It’s going to be a real challenge to keep her calm at home. I wish you all lots of patience and strength for that.

I went through something similar with my youngest son, who nearly died from an autoimmune disease. He was 3 1/2 years old at the time and, of course, didn’t want IV tubes in his arms and legs. It was very difficult.

I wish little Linja a speedy recovery and all the best. Sending you a virtual hug—and please keep thinking positively.
Warmest regards
Marlies

Steffi, your dragon lady is a knockout! That would make a great sweater pattern. I’d wear it in a heartbeat.

Monika, I’ve already dealt with the biggest hurdle. As soon as I get all my stuff back—which he unfortunately refuses to give up—that chapter will finally be closed.

Anja, this is a never-ending story with my shoulder(s). This time it’s the left one. I can only move my arm to a limited extent. When it’s really bad, I can’t even get dressed without painkillers. I’ve had this on the right side before, too. Back then, I got cortisone shots that knocked me out. And painkillers, of course. I went to physical therapy afterward. It helped a little. But it doesn’t go away completely.
A few years ago now, an MRI revealed “endplate damage” to a vertebra. The orthopedist at the time was more of a quack. He didn’t even look at the MRI images. All that manipulation just made it worse and worse.
Maybe someone needs to take a look at the whole picture—not just the arm or the shoulder—but that’s no longer possible in a single appointment these days.
I’m curious to see what the new doctor comes up with.
One “Pätsch” a day—funny, that’s what I used to be called many years ago...

Thanks, Claudia and Petra. The new orthopedist specializes in shoulders. That explains the wait of almost five (!) months. 😒

Your nativity scene turned out so great, Claudia. Now that’s what I call making good use of leftovers. 👍

Claudia, those turned out to be beautiful cards. I wish you and your sister all the best. Hang in there!

Steffi, "drank too much red wine and mucked up the yarn" , that made me laugh so hard. I think it looks good.

Thanks Monika and Petra for your praise.

Monika, your Karl turned out stylish. You always manage the matching colors so well.

Ruth, your embroidered cards are a wonderful memento of a day like that. Your surprise egg creatures are awesome. I especially like the duck. Unfortunately, nobody at my place eats surprise eggs.

Petra, that was a great idea for repurposing CDs. I’ve got quite a few lying around too that would like to live on in a useful way.

I’ve got a few projects in the works right now, but they’re only going partly well. Plus, my shoulder doesn’t want to do much at all. I just have to hang in there until June 2...

Wishing you all a wonderful day.

Dear Steffi, I know the problem with “a gift like that” all too well. There are always people who don’t appreciate the amount of work that goes into things like this, or can’t even imagine it.
Gifts that are really “fiddly” are now only given to people who truly appreciate them.
I really like your wrist warmers, too. I’m very excited to see more photos of your roof lady.

Andrea, you’ve made some cute little things again.

Monika, the skirt for Juna turned out great. Will there maybe be a matching top to go with it?

Petra, your banana socks turned out great. I’ve seen them elsewhere before, too. Are they really comfortable to wear? I’m a bit skeptical about that.

The lazybones finally pulled herself together and finished two UFOs.

   my Easter egg

was meant for a birthday but ended up not being needed for that. Now it’s hanging at my place.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Question for all readers: Categories in the shop / please join in.

I usually start by checking the Crochet and Knitting categories to see what’s new. If I’m looking for something specific, I type it into the search bar. If I don’t find it there, I check the subcategories.

Those little dresses are so cute, Monika. The young ladies look really chic.

Your table lantern is turning out great, Steffi. Unfortunately, I don’t have the patience for that right now.

Oh dear, Ines, I hope you’re doing well. For me, it’s the allergies… Your Karl turned out really beautiful. I really like your color choice.

I crocheted a lantern last night. I still need to get some colored decorative sand.

Crocheting double crochet stitches

Basically, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, and post double crochet are probably familiar.
Double crochets are actually suitable for almost everything. I think they're ideal for all kinds of filet crochet. I like crossed double crochets for shawls/sweaters.

Especially for thick yarn, I've discovered the boho double crochet for myself. With it, you have three loops on the hook (as with a regular double crochet). Then you pull the yarn through the first loop and then through all three loops. Of course, you can also crochet this with any other yarn.

For a color change in crocheted pieces worked in the round, the standing beginning double crochet is an alternative to the chain foundation, which unfortunately always remains quite visible. For the standing beginning double crochet, you put the slip knot and a yarn over on the hook. Then you insert the hook through both loops of a double crochet and pull the yarn through. You work these three loops -as usual- in two sets of two loops. The standing beginning double crochet is finished.

For straight pieces too (and grannies), the standing beginning double crochets (also called false double crochets) are an alternative to the three turning chains, which don't make the edge look very nice. Here you pull the loop up to about the height of a double crochet, hold it in place with your thumb, then go behind the loop with the hook and bring the yarn to the front. That gives you two loops, which are then worked together. The edge looks much more even.

I hope I've explained this clearly. You can find good explanatory videos on the well-known platforms.

April Projects and March Projects 2023, Part 2: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group.

Your Karl is going to be a stunner, Monika!

I took your encouraging words to heart and got started too (Karl 1). Patch 1 is finished, and I have to say: yuck… I don’t like it at all. The gradient yarn I chose looks silly when knitted in stockinette stitch. Even with a contrasting colored stripe. So I’m unraveling it again.
I’m knitting something else with it now, and it looks good with a smooth side.

I’ll need new yarn for Karl then...

Easter tree / Easter bush

Great idea to paint or crochet them, Petra.

Twenty years ago, I looked after an elderly neighbor. The dear woman was chronically bored and needed to be kept busy. So it happened that two lilac trees were decorated with eggs and little animals for Easter, and she sat on her walker trying to count them. From all directions, of course. Naturally, she always came up with a different total, and every time she went shopping, a new package of eggs would be added.
Over time, this added up to 289 eggs and 145 chicks, bunnies, and lambs.

Hanging them up was already a chore, but taking them down once the lilacs had bloomed in full force was even worse...

I haven’t done this in a long time now, because the neighborhood here has changed a lot. In one year, about 100 of them were punctured or stolen. That just takes the fun out of it.

I still think this kind of Easter decoration is very beautiful, and I enjoy it.

Crocheted butterflies: how to use them?

I’ve also given away a larger butterfly in a frame and decorated greeting cards with little butterflies. For a golden wedding anniversary, I wrote a poem, glued it onto gold photo cardstock, and attached butterflies to the outside.

Recently, I saw a photo of a crocheted curtain made entirely of flower chains. Butterflies would work great in that, too.
For a birthday coffee party, I crocheted little butterflies. I scattered them across the table as decorations, and the guests were allowed to take them home.

Scrubby yarn / leftover scrubby yarn: Is it easy to work with?

The last one I worked with was very easy to crochet with. It was actually relatively comfortable and not as scratchy as some others. It was Sponge Creative by Tedi, a 25-gram skein.
