How are you all doing?

Dear Tina, my deepest condolences as well. I wish you lots of strength.
I also have a 91-year-old grandma (my favorite grandma—she’s a gem). Of course, I hope she’ll stay with us a little while longer. She’s still relatively spry for her age and walks without a cane. That’s what I’m afraid of, too—that big void.

I got through Christmas just fine—I had time off, and my sweetheart and I really
made ourselves comfortable. We ate and snacked a lot, watched fairy tale movies, and even found time to crochet.
Now I’m crocheting something for myself again. It feels good.

A Christmas story for you :-)

thank you so much for your little story. It’s a really great read.
It also reminds us that, even in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, we should take a moment to find some peace—and that we don’t always
have to be perfect.
Wishing everyone a merry and peaceful Christmas. God jul

Any fun plans for the Advent weekend?

Wishing you all a lovely, cozy second Sunday of Advent and lots of fun with your plans.

Unfortunately, I have to work, but I just had two days off, so I was able to keep crocheting my
Christmas moose.

There’s still snow here, too—I’ll send you a little bit over so the kids can go sledding.
Best, Andrea

Otterthaler Häkelmaus Has a Birthday // Crochet Mouse Lola

Belated happy 50th birthday from me, too. Sounds like it was a wonderful and cozy celebration. It’s nice to be really pampered once in a while.

Unfortunately, I won’t be getting that old—next year I’ll have a repeating-digit birthday.

You’re as young as you feel. Cheers to you!

What are you working on right now?

I'm currently crocheting 3 projects in turns.
From diba I have 2 patterns (the little polar bear with a scarf still needs limbs and a face, and the Christmas moose is in progress; my colleague requested that one). I hope I can finish them before Christmas

Then I also have a little angel in progress: sewing it together, arms and legs (found the pattern online for free - supergurumi.de)

After that, I think I'd like to crochet something for myself to wear again (a sweater or cardigan). I still have so many Bobbels. Saved especially for that

Are you in the Christmas spirit yet?

We’ve had snow for quite a while now. Today I hung my string lights in the window and set up various Christmas decorations (a snowman, a Santa figure, a little house with a tea light) above the fireplace. I especially love it when it’s dark and everything is glowing in colorful lights. I’m slowly getting into
the Christmas spirit now, and with Christmas music and roasted almonds from the “Julemarket,” it’s perfect.

“Julemarket” basically means a Christmas market with stalls selling all kinds of things. They don’t have mulled wine with
alcohol here like we do in Germany, but they do have a non-alcoholic version with a similar flavor. For alcohol, there are these “Vinmonopolet” stores

Stars and angels are being crocheted.

Collaborative Christmas Poem for CP

Woolly Christmas at Crazypatterns

The needles click softly in the warm room
while in the cooking pot the turnip stews.

The mulled wine on the stove is steaming, too,
while the youngest munches cookies right on cue.

Josefa looks forward to the tree,
and knits a stocking—hard to believe!

And afterward she crochets a blanket, too,
while the housework is left out of view.

The apartment smells of cookies sweet,
my little cat sleeps on the sofa seat.

Despite the mulled wine, the stocking is almost done,
but the yarn is a poor-quality one.

Oh dear, what shall I do with it now?
Unravel it—staying fit somehow.

Josefa can get help, that’s for sure,
from all the helpful CP authors.

Meanwhile she looks for the Christmas baubles,
"What colors are in? I’ll just go Google."

And where are all the lovely crochet stars?
I have the idea: "I’ll make them myself"—that’s what I love by far.

In no time at all, the yarn is here.
So bright in yellow, like the sun’s cheer.

But where can I get a pattern from?
The answer to that question isn’t hard, come on.

Looked on Crazypatterns, hooray!
There they already are—on the picture in the snow that day

One click—this pattern has to be the one.
I could shout out loud with joy and fun

But what was that? There’s a knock at the door!
Never mind, I have no time for it anymore.

The socks won’t let me go
Then it knocks again! Who could it be, though?

Let me in! comes the sound from outside
It’s me, of course—St. Nicholas!!

Oh man, he has the big stocking with him
what’s inside it, I really do care about that whim!

I’m so curious, I want to know,
mandarins, nuts, and the wished-for soft yarn I surely don’t want to forgo.

The yarn comes first in line.
I hope Santa Claus knows that just fine.

Expectantly, Josefa opens the door
happily reaches for the packages and thanks Santa Claus warmly for them all the more.

Where is the yarn in now?
Oh man, how excited I am somehow.

In the first little package is a toaster
then comes an Elvis Presley poster

The yarn must be in here somewhere...
Maybe here? No ... just a beautiful lucky stone there.

No yarn at all? That can’t be right!
Who swiped it—which woolly sprite?

At last I have found it.
What joy! I’ll knit it in the round with it!

Praise and thanks be to the Christ Child!
and I’ll make myself cozy on the stove bench for a while.

But Christmas isn’t over yet; someone is standing at the door.
After all, it’s only a quarter to 4.

Then the smartphone rings as well—who could be calling?
Surprise: more yarn is announcing its coming :-)

Aunt Auguste arrives with even more little packages.
Where is there still a free corner for all these packages?

After thinking briefly, it comes to me:
In the kitchen: in the oven! There’s still room, you see!

But—oh dear—I’ve already discovered it before:
Someone has already hidden something there, for sure.

There lies a package with a red bow,
There’s no yarn inside; it smells like soap, you know!

Mischief is sitting on my neck now
I’ll just let the whole thing "sink in" somehow

Because you don’t find soap in the oven every day.
Does anyone have a question about that, by the way? ;-)

Aunt Auguste is a little surprised,
after all, she’ll soon be 100, age-wise.

A suitable hiding place was found after all.
Meanwhile the knitting needles make their rounds and call.

What do you think, where might this hiding place be?
Could it perhaps be somewhere back there, maybe?

exactly, there’s still room back there in the cupboard
and also in the stove bench, undisturbed.

Oh, there are still many hiding places,
in Grandma’s cupboard there in the hallway spaces.

Now then, quickly put it in there,
suddenly the doorbell rings; it’s my neighbor, Mrs. Schmidt

At last I have found it, all wound.

Praise and thanks be to the Christ Child!
and I'll make myself cozy on the stove bench for a while.

How’s the weather where you are today?

You won’t believe it, but winter has arrived in Norway. It’s been snowing continuously for the first time
today, and it’s -1 degree.

It had already snowed in the higher elevations two days ago.

So that means it’s time to crochet or knit some warm clothes.

Wish List

Sounds great. I’d definitely join in—after all, my list is a mile long too, and it just doesn’t seem to get any shorter.
Can we crochet anything from our wish lists? Is there a deadline by which the “project” has to be finished?

I just thought of another gift idea for Krea_Tina. Is your dad maybe a soccer fan? You could crochet a little soccer player figure with a scarf in his team’s colors, or a little lucky pig is always a hit.
Just a thought.

Here in Norway, we had wonderful sunshine, and it was also საკმაოდ windy, with temperatures around 6°C. But it wasn’t as stormy as it was for most others. Here, only the loose leaves were blowing around.

Working with Bobbels: Experiences

maybe you should use a larger crochet hook with a 4-ply Bobbel so you don’t get caught.

I also had my share of problems with a 4-ply Bobbel; it was so stiff and thicker than my others.
That’s why I like crocheting with 3-ply ones; that works great. Even with a 2.5 mm crochet hook.

Working with Bobbels: Experiences

Krea_Tina has already explained this really well.
Crocheting with multiple strands takes some getting used to, but that passes quickly.

Since I often crochet with cotton yarn, I quickly noticed with Bobbel yarn that the crocheted piece feels
so soft and fluffy, and it doesn’t scratch the skin either. I just love this range of colors.

Your favorite color(s) + favorite material?

I most enjoy crocheting with cotton crochet yarn, Catania, thin Diana crochet yarn, and this Järbo yarn here. Lately also these gradient cakes.

Favorite colors: this bright neon yarn, pastel shades, pink, rainbow colors, soft lilac, white...

For amigurumi, mostly light, cheerful colors (pink, orange, red, green, sunny yellow, and these in-between colors, e.g. light blue, light lilac, light green, etc.

What other hobbies do you have?

I have lots of hobbies, a bit of everything,
But above all, when I take a crochet break, I like doing crossword puzzles or spending time with those coloring books for adults. On my tablet, I like playing those hidden-object picture games.

Two days ago I started doing puzzles again, because my husband and I bought ourselves a panoramic puzzle.
It's supposed to be finished soon and go above the couch. But until then, there are still soooo many pieces to sort.

But... crocheting is simply more fun.

What have you been crafting today?

Today I continued crocheting my amigurumi using one of my new craft books (it was part of my birthday gifts)

The book in question (in English) is Edward’s Crochet - Doll Emporium by Kerry Lord (new edition, Oct. 2017)

It’s really fun, but now I need a little break.

Do you have a favorite stitch?

It depends on what you want to crochet. As I’ve mentioned here before, for amigurumi I always use single crochet (mainly because of the stuffing—so it doesn’t show through).
But for larger projects where I want to work quickly, I prefer to crochet regular double crochet stitches.

I also like the shell stitch—it just can’t be too “holey.” Except for delicate crochet shawls, where I like to use single crochet, chain stitches, and double crochet; for little doll hats, I like those front and back post stitches.

Bastelfan’s Birthday // download free crochet patterns

That’s so sweet of you all to think of me. Thank you all for the birthday wishes.

I’ll make up for the pampering this weekend, since I unfortunately had to work today.
We’ll go out for a nice meal,
raise a toast and make ourselves comfortable at home with a good movie.

I also got some treats, as well as a gift card for clothes and some new craft books.
Everything’s great

Survey for All Crochet Lovers

Yes, I also remember crocheting pot holders in “Handicrafts” class at school very well. That’s when I started crocheting (around 1974–1976). We also made blankets out of these granny squares (they used to be called something else—crochet squares).
A friend of mine in 8th grade once gave me a handkerchief case made from these granny squares (it still exists). I then crocheted a shoulder bag together with another school friend—that was in 1978 (we both made the same one).
So, I’d say I practically grew up with yarn. My mom used to work at a worsted spinning mill called Alwo (Altenburger Wollspinnerei), and she’d always bring home these bags of yarn (for a low price)
Later on, I also spent some time knitting those Pumuckl-themed sweaters for my kids—even little cable patterns and scarves. Since I often drop stitches when knitting, I gave it up.
Then, when these amigurumi figures became popular (I had to Google what they were first), I started with a little mini Hello Kitty. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked on these crocheted figures. Mostly, I crochet dolls. Animals, not so much.
I’ve crocheted small doilies, round tablecloths, triangular shawls, dolls, loveys, and a few animals (dog, cat, elephant, mouse, frog, donkey)
Thanks to CP, there are more and more of them, and you get better and better too. My first figures didn’t look as neat as the new ones do now.

Are craftspeople also skilled DIYers?

That’s so nice—so many handy women here.
I count myself among the handy women, too. Things like painting cabinets or painting the fences outside, or our hallway coat rack—I really enjoy doing that.
I even put together the storage boxes under the bed—I didn’t want to wait for my sweetheart to come home from work (I was supposed to wait), but I surprised him: when he got home, the boxes were all set up, and I was over the moon. It was a ton of fun. I also put together smaller shelves.
But when it comes to big wall units or our sleeper sofa, my husband takes care of that and I help out.

I used to live on my own for a while, and back then I had to put my cabinets together by myself. I even assembled my 1.40 m bed with a slatted frame all by myself back then—I had to sleep somewhere, and there was no one around to help. It wasn’t that easy, but I managed it.

And yet people still say women can’t do that.

What are you working on right now?

I’m currently crocheting an angel for a coworker. I still need to crochet one arm and the wings, then sew them on—and it’ll be done.

And for one of my husband’s coworkers, she wants a Minion about 15–20 cm tall. The body and the pants are almost finished. I’ll continue this over the weekend, since I have time off then.

Wishlist patterns

Oh my gosh, right now I have 196 patterns on my wish list (including free ones).
Some I’ve already bought and crocheted, and others get added little by little. It just depends on when I feel like crocheting one thing or another. Right now I have several
projects that need to be finished first (as gifts or for coworkers).

I can’t do everything at once. I’m just like most people—the to-do list keeps getting longer. How am
I supposed to get through it all so quickly with all these great patterns here?

If I like something, I’ll bookmark it or order it right away and get started. It varies.
I have to use up my yarn stash somehow, after all. Actually, I still have the right yarn on hand for smaller projects
.

Taking a break from the needle and doing some crafting

Well, I can’t go “without” doing something. My hands always have to be busy.
When I’m not crocheting, I’ll pull out an adult coloring book, do some puzzles, or play those escape games (where you have to get out of a room) on my tablet. Eventually, I’ll get around to working with my beads, too.

Soon I’ll have to make a birthday card for a milestone birthday (I still have some scraps to use up, since I’m not making any more of those).
I also use my sewing machine every now and then. My husband would like some sewn sandbags as miniature mock-ups for his tank model. We both have our hobbies.
So, as you can see, there’s always something to do.

What’s life like for you?

Everything here sounds very interesting.
I’ll join in too. My sweetheart and I live here in Norway, about a half-hour drive from Oslo, in an 80-square-meter apartment. It’s more like a house. We live downstairs, and our landlords live upstairs, and we get along well with them. We each have our own separate entrance.
We have our own outdoor terrace with seating. We don’t have to tend a garden or mow the lawn (the landlord prefers to do that himself). Looking after flower beds like in Germany isn’t very common here. There are more lawns and raspberry bushes (we were even allowed to pick some).
The children have already left home (my two sons are 28 and 30, and my husband’s son is turning 30 now).
We don’t have any pets, but we do have plenty of hobby and craft supplies (I crochet and do beadwork, and my husband does model building and cycling; he owns 10 road bikes, 3 in the house and the others in the garage).
The small “children’s room” is his hobby and training room for indoor rides on the “roller.”

Although the apartment is on a busy road with bus and train connections, you can hardly hear it when the windows are closed. Right behind it, the forest begins, perfect for long walks.
In big cities you have apartment blocks; here, a bit farther out, you often find these little houses.

thinking about it the other way around: building up a yarn stash

“Yarn rationing” is a good one. You crochet and crochet, and the yarn just doesn’t seem to get any less. Pretty soon you’re running out of space.
And just like that, today of all days, I caught myself buying yarn again, even though I don’t have any idea yet what for. But you never know. Yarn doesn’t “go bad,” after all.
I simply can’t resist this gradient cake yarn. I have lots of projects buzzing around in my head.

Winter will be here in no time, and I still need a whole bunch of crochet shawls for that.

The Greatest Happiness on Earth, Part 2

I just read this post.
Of course, I’d also like to extend my warmest congratulations to the new parents and their sweet Anton.
Enjoy this time, because before you know it, they’ll be taller than you.
My two sons are already 28 and 30, and I sometimes wonder, too, where on earth did the time go?
I hope little Anton feels right at home in his new home and gets to explore the world.

Christmas Story on Crazypatterns

That was chaos. Did I really want to put myself through all that again, on a holiday meant for reflection? Anything but stress, I thought...
