Sandra, I hope you get back to full health really soon. Just treat yourself to a little rest when Anton is at daycare. You’ve earned it. Our bodies just need that every now and then. :)

Knitting Mistakes: Beginner Mistakes in Knitting // Common Knitting Mistakes

I also think gauge swatches are really important, and I always recommend them. By the way, mine usually turn out differently than specified. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can even wash the swatch afterward.

Knitting Mistakes: Beginner Mistakes in Knitting // Common Knitting Mistakes

I think the most common mistake is dropping stitches. But that can be quickly fixed with a crochet hook, even if it spans several rows.

Another mistake I’ve made myself is miscounting or forgetting decreases or increases. When that happens, there’s no helping it—you have to unravel or knit back.

It’s happened to me quite a few times while watching a movie—that is, while knitting without looking—that I didn’t have the stitches properly on the needle. This can happen if, for example, you’re using multi-ply yarn. Not only does it look bad, but it could also result in a hole forming right there later on. So, once again, you have to unravel or knit back.

How can you avoid this? Good question. I’d say pay close attention. ;-)

How are you doing? Are you feeling the Christmas rush?

The sun is shining here, so it’s really nice. The weekend was great, and now I’m kicking off a creative week. The first Christmas gifts are already done, and I’m working on the rest. I’m not stressing about it at all.

This year, I’m already starting to put up Christmas decorations—I’ve never done that before. I love it when everything is cozy and snug.

Tip for a door wreath

Hi Sandra,
the door wreath already looks great!

How about adding the date of birth? Or at least the year of birth. I don’t quite remember what occasion you’re giving it as a gift for. It would definitely be a good fit for a birthday.

I seem to recall that the parents do something with forklifts—could that be right?

The Start of My Dollhouse

Yes, Andrea, it’s great that you’re doing this for yourself. I totally get where you’re coming from.
That child is still alive inside me, too—I feel it every day.

About 20 years ago, the child in me got to live out something for a few years that didn’t exist when I was a kid. Back then, I enthusiastically bid on “Surprise Eggs”—the contents, that is—on eBay, specifically the unassembled ones. I then put them together with dedication and enthusiasm. I was literally in “Surprise Egg” fever. I could never walk past the “Surprise Eggs.”

At some point, though, I’d had my fill. And I still have all those pieces. I’d bought a large display case back then, which I still have filled to this day, and I enjoy looking at it every day. I’m especially fond of the miniatures—little cars, for example, and other things. Oh, I’m still just as enthusiastic about them. But these days, I just prefer to knit.

I’m already curious to see how things will go with your doll furniture.

Bind Off with a Crochet Hook

Yeah, great. So I’m not the only one with this idea!
Yeah, I agree—it looks neater.
It felt a little awkward for the first few stitches, but then it went much better than using two knitting needles.

November Projects: Fun in the Crazypatterns Craft Group

Ruth, your knitting snowman is such a super cute idea. It’s sure to bring joy.

Marlene, I’m looking forward to seeing your hat.

Actually… I thought I was done with the thick yarn for now. Buuut… my husband had the idea that I could use the leftover yarn to knit a hat for him.

Well, the things we do for love! He’ll get his hat, and I’ll see if I can get that tape for sewing in, so his ears stay warm. ;-)

You guys always have great tips here.

And I just tried something cool. I suddenly had the idea to use a crochet hook to bind off the stitches. I’m telling you, it works great! I’m going to do it this way from now on.

Have a wonderful Sunday evening, everyone! I’m going to get right back to knitting my sweater so I can finish the first sleeve.

Bind Off with a Crochet Hook

Yesterday I came up with a (for me) completely new idea—or rather, a new way—to bind off while knitting. I’m going to do it this way from now on using a crochet hook. It’s super easy!

The stitches stay on the knitting needle, of course, and then I simply pull the second-to-last stitch through the last stitch using the crochet hook.

Has anyone else tried this before?

Thanks for your feedback on the jacket. It’s in constant use and is dearly loved.

Handmade crafts are totally on trend

Dear Birgit, I agree with Nina on this too. Especially when it’s for a good cause.
How about donating 60 euros instead of 30?

We really do live in a small town. And I noticed that the woman selling the baby jackets here sold them within two hours at the stated price. I also think the price should be much higher to cover the labor and the yarn, especially since they’re one-of-a-kind pieces. You can’t even begin to calculate the hourly wage for that.

I know plenty of people who really think it’s worth it—people who can’t knit themselves but love to give such handmade items as gifts.

Here’s another example:
My neighbor knits children’s sweaters and jackets purely for the joy of it. She also started out selling them for 25 euros. She’s now up to 45 euros. And she’s amazed that the demand is still there—in fact, it’s actually grown even bigger. Because everyone who buys something like this wants to get something valuable. And as the price goes up, so does the sense of greater value.

Just something to think about. Because I think your lovely creations are far too valuable to diminish their worth with a low price.

By the way, I’m sending you a hug too. :)

Warm regards
Monika

Wow, Ina, that looks absolutely fantastic. I really like the colors, too. I can totally see why the yarn is so easy to knit with.

By the way, my husband loves his jacket. He gets cold very easily in our somewhat chilly office, and now—finally—he’s not cold anymore! It was really worth the effort. :)

I’m continuing to knit the sweater for Linja now. It felt really strange last night to have such thin needles in my hands again. I’ll show you the result once it starts to take shape a bit more.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, and plenty of time for knitting!

The socks are 16 cm long and are described in detail, row by row. The measurements can easily be adjusted to make them longer or shorter.

There’s also a table with examples of other sizes for advanced knitters.

Wow, Birgit, that looks really beautiful and professional. You’ve really been hard at work. I love markets like that, too. There’s a market like that here in our town in November, too. I could stand there for hours just marveling at everything.

There’s also a woman there who sells socks and hand-knitted children’s clothes. For example, a little jacket costs 50–60 euros—which I actually think is still too cheap, considering the labor and yarn.

Baby Yarn

I only use natural fibers—either soft wool that doesn’t itch (only from sheep that aren’t mistreated) or pure cotton. A blend of wool and silk is also excellent for clothing worn next to the skin. Baby merino or extra-fine merino (I use the one from Drops) is a good choice for babies.

Merino Wool

Hi JBaker,

Merino wool is great for knitting or crocheting and keeps you nice and warm. It’s perfect for winter.
You’ll find lots of great patterns here at Crazypatterns that use merino wool.

I work with it a lot. Just make sure to check whether the wool is machine-washable or not. I only wash it on the wool cycle without spinning. It always works really well.

Good luck!

Monika

November Projects: Fun in the Crazypatterns Craft Group

Dear Ina,

thank you so much for the info on your cuff for the hat. That’s a great solution for making hats windproof. As you’ve already noticed, my sweetheart likes to stay warm. And that goes for hats, too. ;-)

Yes, he really does consider himself lucky. When he tried it on, he would have loved to keep it on right away. Now I’m going to sew on the buttons right away. After 31 years together, our love is still just as strong as it was in the beginning, and we really enjoy making each other happy.

I’m glad you like the jacket, too. I think it turned out great as well. By the way, I used 22 skeins to knit it. It weighs 1100 g.

Ina, the inner cuff is a great idea, especially since it won’t pull on the ears anymore. My husband could really use that—he’s pretty sensitive there.

Where can you buy these cuffs?

I started the second sleeve of the thick jacket yesterday and am slowly making progress. But right now, I only get to it in the evenings. Once both sleeves are finished, I’ll post another photo.

I’m really looking forward to knitting with thin yarn again. It definitely suits me much better, and I’m making good progress very quickly.

I wish all of you here a wonderful day and lots of joy in whatever you’re doing right now.
