What does the asterisk in the pattern mean?

Why isn’t there an explanation for the asterisk in the patterns, and why do they specify which stitches need to be increased instead of simply saying to increase every 2nd, 3rd, or 4th stitch? The pattern for the cuddly bear is confusing and not good.

I would recommend writing to the author directly. You’ll definitely get an answer there, because she knows best what is meant.
