February Projects + January Projects 2021, Part 4: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

Oh, wow, Andrea!! You’re so fast! The new hat turned out great. Congratulations!!
Yeah, it’s a huge difference—you can really tell.
Krümel looks soooo cute in the new hat.

You won’t believe it, but you’ve motivated me so much to knit this hat for Sternchen, too, that I picked out the yarn today. It’s also relatively thin and has different colors in it that are similar to yours. Now I need at least four hands, because that means I have three ongoing projects.

By the way, I’ve finished one wrist warmer—except for the thumb. That’s driving me a little crazy. But I really want to get it done, so it’s time for unraveling and practice again.... grrrr.
I’ll post a photo when it’s finished.

Good night!

Have a great weekend, everyone

Thank you so much, Josefa! I wish the same for you and everyone else here.

It’s stormy here, with occasional rain. That calls for short walks. Otherwise, of course, we’re knitting and crocheting.

Ines, yes, I’m really thrilled with the DF—especially because it produces such great results. It works really well with the yarn guide on my finger. I can now knit just as fast with it as I do with regular knitting. I’m curious to see how you get along with it.

Marion, thanks for the info on the blankets. Last year I knitted a shawl that I started at one corner. It should be similar with crocheting. Luckily, there’s YouTube.

Andrea, yes, let’s do that. I’ll knit the hat for Sternchen too, and then we’ll have a cute triplet photo. :)
I’m so happy that you’ve taken the plunge into knitting—and with a pattern that wasn’t even that easy, no less. Hats off to you!! You’ll see that you’ll enjoy knitting cute clothes for the little ones more and more. Just like you, I had to relearn everything from scratch and came up with lots of ideas in the process. Even today, I still enjoy learning new techniques through videos, like double-face knitting right now. Your little booties are sure to turn out very cute, too. I can’t wait to see them.

I wish you all a wonderful start to the weekend!

Quick Sheet Pan Flatbread—great for breakfast or as a side dish

Thanks, Petra and Christina, for your feedback and your variations!

Petra, what did you use to bake it—dry yeast or baking soda? And how much did you use? I haven’t tried the version with the smaller baking sheet yet, but I’ll definitely give it a try.

Christina, your variation looks really delicious, too. Did you use baking pans for that? On a baking sheet, it turns out thinner and gets very crispy on all sides. And depending on how you season it, it always tastes different.

Quick Sheet Pan Flatbread—great for breakfast or as a side dish

Andrea, the bread turns out so that you can cut right through it. In some places, it’s even too thin for that—it’s more like fresh crispbread. It depends on how big the baking sheet is. You could try using baking soda. I’m not sure, though, how much baking soda is equivalent to one packet of baking powder. I haven’t tried this recipe with yeast yet. It’s worth a try.

Yes, it’s really delicious and offers lots of possibilities for variations.

Andrea, I’m thrilled with how great you’ve pulled this off. Your little one looks super cute in it. Hats off to you for taking on such a challenging practice piece. After my long break, I spent hours and days watching YouTube videos and following along. Not only did that help me get back into knitting, but I also learned a whole lot. I highly recommend it. It really gets you more and more excited.

So now I’m interested in the hat, too. I’ve already downloaded the pattern, and it’s on my to-do list. Then our triplets would even be dressed alike, just in different colors.

Marion gave me an idea. I’m going to design a little loop scarf in double-face for Sternchen. I’ll start with that. Let’s see how it turns out. It might take a while, though.

My goodness, there’s a lot going on here! It’s really great to see how hard-working you all are.

Ines, your little chick turned out so cute again. Does it have bunny ears on top? And all those little details… absolutely charming. The Tunisian crochet nest looks great, too. I admire you for both—it’s not really my thing.

Andrea, I’m really impressed by your knitting! It looks really good. You seem to be really back into knitting again—great! Your baby blanket for Krümel is also very pretty. Now she won’t have to be cold anymore. Good idea for using up leftover yarn balls. I still have some of those too, but it wouldn’t be enough for a blanket.

Marion, is that your blanket? Have you ever crocheted one like that before? It’s corner-to-corner too, as far as I can tell, right?

As you’ve probably already guessed, I’m knitting the wrist warmer sample for Sonja. I can only do this during the day because I have to concentrate fully on it. I’ve already made some progress today—all the way past the finger hole. This is what it looks like now. I’m totally thrilled and can’t stop. I want to finish the first one tomorrow.

Why are granny squares so popular?

I think granny squares are an exciting project because they offer so many possibilities for combining colors and shapes. You can sew them together to make all sorts of things, like a blanket, a poncho, or something similar. And they’re perfect for using up leftover yarn.

Bobbel, Gradient Yarn + Effect Yarn: Make Exciting Projects Now

A scarf? A loop? A stole? With this pattern, you can decide what to make—and in what length or width. I used thin, hand-dyed yarn. But I can also imagine that gradient yarn would produce a very pretty result.

Since the pretty lace pattern repeats, you can easily vary the length and width. You should have good knitting experience.

January Projects 2021, Part 3: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

Andrea, I knew it—that your little one would awaken your desire to knit. I simply think knitted items are much prettier and also more elastic. I’m really happy that you’re so pleased about it. :)

I usually use size 3 knitting needles, rarely 2.5 or 3.5. For Sternchen, I knitted almost everything with size 3 needles. That works great with yarn lengths from 110 to 170.

With the CraSyTrio, I’ve had the best experience with the bamboo version. It holds very well and is a bit longer than the metal one. I get on better with it than with a set of double-pointed needles. Even now with the DF, it works great.

Ina, I’m thrilled with your idea for the sitting ball and all those jars for the yarn. Wow—handling 8 skeins is really an art in itself. Do you plan to crochet all the way around the ball? You’ve already finished half of it.
Thanks for your feedback on the little bag. I’m still enjoying it myself right now.

Christina, we had so much snow and a snowstorm yesterday, too. It blew right up to the door, even though everything there is covered by a roof that extends several meters out.

I’m back at the DF again—yes, it’s an addiction, I admit. :-)
Now I get to do another test knit for Sonja. Here’s how it looks so far.

Quick Sheet Pan Flatbread—great for breakfast or as a side dish

Ines, you’re so quick, and your flatbread looks delicious. Congratulations!
Oh, I’ll have to try the version with rosemary sometime—that sounds good. Or I could definitely imagine adding pizza herbs to it.

The thing with yeast is that bread is easier to digest, for example, the longer it rises. That’s because certain enzymes form in the dough that make it more digestible. My husband, for example, can’t tolerate baked goods that have only risen briefly. Ever since we started baking with yeast water and just a tiny bit of yeast, he’s been able to eat any kind of bread. That does take 3–4 hours, though. It’s worth giving it a try. A friend once explained it to us and sent us information about it. I’m very grateful to her for that. Now I can even eat our homemade bread or rolls in the evening without it feeling heavy in my stomach.

Another thing that’s very easy to digest and takes longer to rise is bread made with baking ferment. I really enjoy baking and eating that.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who’s active here! It’s really become like a second family here. And that just feels good.

I also miss being in touch with people, especially my grandchildren. I would have seen them much more often last year. To my 1.5-year-old granddaughter, I’m practically a stranger when we see each other again. And that really makes me sad.

Crafting always brings me back to a place of joy, and it’s lovely to work on projects together here and show each other what we’ve created. Since I don’t have a local craft group, this is a wonderful substitute.

I’m also happy to have developed some very nice personal connections with a few people here. It’s simply lovely and enriching. That’s why I’d also like to thank CP for this platform and for making the forum possible.

It’s wonderful that we have this space, especially during these difficult times. Together, we’ll get through this until better times come. And they’re sure to come.

Josefa, there are many people who can’t tolerate yeast. And yes, with yeast you always need time for it to rise—but not with baking powder.

Petra, the difference between cream of tartar baking powder and regular baking powder is the ingredients. The regular kind is pretty unhealthy. Especially the phosphate in it isn’t exactly good for the body and has a negative effect on the gut. A naturopath once pointed that out to us. Cream of tartar baking powder contains natural ingredients, including baking soda. You can also use that on its own if you don’t have baking powder. However, I’m not quite sure about the amount.

Quick Sheet Pan Flatbread—great for breakfast or as a side dish

This morning, instead of rolls, I baked my quick sheet pan flatbread. Not only does it taste absolutely delicious, but it’s also very versatile and incredibly easy to make. For example, as a side dish with salads or for breakfast.

We love it because it’s nice and crispy. You can also slice it in half if you prefer it even thinner.

Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 300 g whole-grain spelt flour (regular flour probably works too)
  • 1 packet of cream of tartar baking powder
  • 300 ml water mixed with plant-based milk (regular milk works too)
  • 30 g olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • Seeds of your choice for sprinkling on top

Preparation:
Mix all the ingredients together and then spread the mixture onto a baking sheet. The dough is relatively thin (compared to regular yeast dough) and can therefore be spread out easily. How thin the bread turns out depends on the pan. On a larger baking sheet, the bread will be quite thin, whereas in a smaller pan it will be slightly thicker.

Now sprinkle your choice of seeds on top. I like to use black cumin for this. But anything else works too, such as sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and the like.

Now place it in the cold oven and bake at
180 degrees Celsius on the convection setting
for 30–40 minutes

For me, 30 minutes is usually enough because I use a large baking sheet.
In a smaller baking pan, it might take longer. Just give it a try.
The bread should be lightly browned.

Here are some photos of the finished flatbread:

This is what it looks like coming out of the oven:

Then, after letting it cool for a few minutes, I cut it into pieces:

And then it’s served:

I hope you enjoy making this and bon appétit!

Monika
