Birthdays and Congratulations

Dear Marlies and Andrea, thank you both. You’re definitely among those who receive lots of birthday wishes, given how active you are here.

Andrea, that’s interesting, and surely also of interest to the tech team at CP, that you couldn’t find your thread. I really can’t explain that right now. Maybe that’s not only happening to you?

Perhaps others would like to share that they appreciate the birthday wishes?

Steffi, that’s a great idea for a summer sweater. The yarn is pretty thick, though. Maybe a vest would work… but thanks for the idea to browse around. I hadn’t even thought of that yet.

Sonja, I love your loop scarf! It looks fantastic! Especially with those colors. I have to say, I’m really tempted to make one myself… By the way, you’re pretty quick, considering you had to unravel everything.

My Peter likes the colors of the “scrap loop.” He especially likes the yellow, and blue always works anyway.

Secondhand, Surplus / B-Grade Goods

Exactly, Ina, that’s how I see it too. I still have an old Braun 3-Mix—I had it 40 years ago, and it still works great. It’s been repaired twice and cleaned inside.

We had stores like that—where you could buy and sell—back in the ’70s and ’80s, too. I loved shopping there. And I love flea markets as well. Back then, I bought almost all of my son’s toys and clothes at flea markets. Later, he passed his toys on himself at his own flea market booth. That was always something special, by the way. You had to be there by 5 a.m. to snag a good spot. It was quite an adventure, but it was incredibly fun.

By the way, we have a Repair Café here where broken appliances are still repaired. Of course, that only works for the older ones.

Do you follow fashion trends?

Ahimsa, I’m absolutely delighted about this thread. And I’m realizing that I’m not alone in my habits. Great, I love that!

I’m also a fan of flared pants—back then and now. And I’m just as much a fan of the Kelly Family. I saw them live at Lake Constance in the ’90s. That was a real experience. Back then, Angelo was still a cute blond curly-haired angel. Today he has his own family, whom I also enjoy listening to, by the way.

I’m a huge fan of recycling. I almost don’t want to say it, but I have things in my closet—jackets, for example—that I’ve been wearing for almost 20 years. Simply because I still like them. It’s the same with shoes. Last year, I had my 10-year-old boots resoled at our old cobbler’s. I love them because they’re so wonderfully comfortable. With new shoes, I often have the problem that they don’t fit properly.

As a teenager, I always paid attention to fashion, but I haven’t cared about that for a very long time. The only thing that matters to me is that I like it and that it’s comfortable.

Potholders are a gift that’s always well received. These even have gloves hidden behind a ladybug disguise. They’re very easy to make and add a welcome splash of color to any kitchen.

For toddlers with a play shop, you can crochet this little shopping bag over the weekend and fill it with lemons and carrots. You’re sure to make the child you give it to very happy.

A convertible little pinafore dress that grows with your child, featuring knitted-in hearts — it’s a real joy to knit. It fits a baby of around 6 months and will still fit a 3-year-old toddler. The little dress is knitted in one piece from the bottom up.

Working with bobbel yarn, novelty yarn, and gradient yarn: it's fun.

This scarf/cowl is knitted from thin, hand-dyed lace yarn. Not only can the scarf be knitted in different styles—scarf, cowl, or stole—but the pretty lace pattern can also be adjusted to any width or length. You’ll definitely never get bored while knitting it.

This cardigan with a hat for toddlers ages 2 and up was knitted with Bobbel cotton yarn. The coordinating colored stripes can be beautifully incorporated using colorful yarn scraps. The cardigan will definitely fit up to about age 3.

This vest is figure-flattering! That’s because it features vertical stripes that are later crocheted on. The vest is knitted from bouclé yarn, which creates a lovely rustic effect. It fits size 40/42 and is slightly fitted at the waist.

Yes, Christina, those are the joys—and not-so-joys—of life with our cute furry friends. Luckily, you’ve now found other things you’ve been missing for a long time. That’s a really nice story.

Steffi, you’re always so hard at work. Too bad you had to rip it out, but in the end, the sweater should be something you like and enjoy wearing.

It’s great to have an overview like this. Yeah, I appreciated that too. But I won’t be going on another “yarn diet” anytime soon. It’s just such a joy to have a stash, and I’m going to enjoy that for now.

That said, it’s a good idea to use up more than you buy. And I actually do stick to that… at least I think so. ;-)

Birthdays and Congratulations

Dear fellow readers,

A birthday is always a special occasion in life. This day essentially belongs to the person celebrating and should be celebrated and honored accordingly. That’s why I think the birthday threads here at crazypatterns are such a lovely gesture, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Josefa for them. I haven’t seen anything like this on other platforms, and it’s certainly not something to be taken for granted, since it takes quite a bit of time. I’m happy to join in on the birthday wishes regularly, just as other well-wishers do here.

However, I’ve noticed for some time now that fewer and fewer people apparently feel like congratulating the birthday celebrants. I’ve been thinking about what the reason for this might be.

Maybe it’s because many people here don’t even read their birthday wishes? Otherwise, I can’t explain why there’s so often no response at all from the birthday person to all those heartfelt wishes. I, too, have recently caught myself wondering why I’m sending birthday wishes if they might not even be read.

Dear readers, with this thread, I just want to share my observation and encourage you to check in here on or after your birthday.

If you’ve signed up for the birthday list, you’re definitely in for a pleasant surprise. And everyone who sends birthday wishes is happy to know that their messages are being read. :)

Yes, Petra, I’d already thought about making a scarf, especially since the yarn is nice and soft and also quite thick (80 m per 50 g). So I’m not quite sure yet what I’ll make. There’s plenty of time—the yarn doesn’t have an expiration date, thankfully. By the way, it’s a 50/50 blend of polyester and cotton.

Petra, this all looks great. You’ve really accomplished a lot—wow!

I somehow forgot about this thread. Back when Josefa was still handing out the monthly “awards,” writing things down and weighing them was always part of the process for me, too. But then, as I said, it fell by the wayside. But it’s enough for me to show my projects in the needlework group. There, I can check how many there were.

Even baby dolls can never have enough diapers. You can crochet several of these right away using leftover yarn and give the doll’s mom a gift that’s sure to be a hit. The diaper fits baby dolls measuring 43–50 cm.

For dolls up to 50 cm, you can crochet this sleeping bag, which fits perfectly in a doll stroller. The headrest can be filled with cotton batting (as a pillow) or pulled over the backrest of the stroller. The pattern is easy to follow and makes a great TV project.

Anja, that’s so sweet of you to defend the “Turbo” label for me. :) All right ... accepted.

Ines, you’ve already finished something new?! That’s unbelievable! And on top of that, you’re always making such complicated things. I couldn’t design and crochet them that quickly. Hats off to you - seriously!

Right now, I’m really into these dishcloths, and there will definitely be more to come. But I have other things to work on first. Here’s the sixth dishcloth—the last one for now:

You might remember that I knitted myself a colorful loop scarf this summer. Since Peter borrowed it yesterday evening, I got the idea to knit one like it for him from the leftover yarn from the hat. I’m doing a test knit, so to speak, for my own pattern, which I finally want to finish writing. Half of the loop will be blue and the other half mustard yellow. The pattern is also a bit easier to see in a solid color. Here’s how far I’ve gotten:

I’m really looking forward to my yarn package. It might even arrive before the weekend. But I couldn’t resist at my swap group either. This yarn arrived today, and I’m absolutely thrilled with how beautiful it looks. You can barely tell from the photo. It’s a bright red with colorful little knots in between. I’ll most likely use it for some kind of decoration—I just don’t know exactly what yet. But I’m sure I’ll figure something out.

Bakery, Part 3.

Oh, how delicious! There are some lovely treats here again. Steffi, your cake surely tastes as good as it looks. Hmmmmm...
Andrea, Donauwellen is one of my favorite cakes. But making it myself is too much work for me. I like it when things are quick.

Today, for the first time in a long while, I baked a cake again. We have so many apples, and this recipe is just perfect for them. My go-to recipe for cakes or pizzas: just top it with fruit and a few other goodies—done!

Today, in addition to raisins, apples, and ground almonds, I also mixed in pineapple chunks, bananas, and pomegranate seeds. Then I topped it with a few whole almonds and buckwheat. And of course, cinnamon—you can’t leave that out.

And now I’m enjoying it with a cup of coffee and (instead of cream) coconut yogurt. Hmmm… so delicious!

November Projects and October Projects 2021, Part 3: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

Hey, everyone, I’m amazed at how much has already been posted here again. That’s enough to fill an entire evening. :)
Thanks for your feedback on the dishcloths. Number 6 is also finished, but I haven’t photographed it yet.

Andrea, from now on, you’re “Turbo-Andrea” to me. The speed at which you crochet—and especially the quantities you make—is unbelievable! When I look at your display, even a market stall can hardly keep up. I can totally imagine that you’ve already gotten your coworkers hooked on it. You’ll have your hands full if they start placing orders with you. I’m so happy for you that you’re enjoying your new job. That really means a lot. By the way, your bags look very original and especially creative. A really wonderful idea.

Steffi, your sweater is already looking really good. You’re “Turbo-Steffi” now—you’ve earned that name—because I think this has gone really fast. The fact that the colors are different wouldn’t bother me. If you do end up unraveling it again, you could knit a red stripe—or some other pattern—between the two shades of gray. Then it won’t be noticeable anymore.
We’re always out and about in our camper in the summer too. It’s almost a classic car now, nearly 34 years old. I can hardly believe it.

Sonja, how nice that you’re getting back to knitting again. But you also had a lovely time with family and friends. That’s something very precious. Winter is still long enough for knitting. It’s really annoying that you had to unravel your cowl again. I know mishaps like that. Luckily, I have a lot of patience when it comes to that.

Anja, I love your very special sense of humor too. It’s fun to read your posts. For that alone, you’re something of a highlight here.

And now I just have to tell you briefly that I’ve gone and done it again. You’ve probably already guessed—a big package of yarn is on its way to me. Drops is offering 30% off alpaca yarn, and I just couldn’t resist. For one thing, I ordered some thinner alpaca yarn for double-face knitting, and then also 1 kg of thicker yarn in two beautiful colors. When I placed the order, I was still thinking of a wool blanket. But now that I think about it, it’ll most likely turn into two jackets—one for my Peter and one for me—maybe a bit of a matching look. You can never have enough jackets. It’ll be thicker than my current one and more suitable for outdoors.

Have a lovely, cozy evening with your needles clicking away.

I feel exactly the same way as Petra. My friend has passed so many things down to me that I haven’t needed to buy anything for years—except for underwear and socks. I knit my own clothes. And if there’s anything else I need, I check my online swap group. I’ve gotten so many nice things there. If something doesn’t fit me, I just pass it on through the swap group.

And just like that, two more dishcloths are finished—Nos. 4 and 5. The 6th is on the needle. :)
Yes, Marion, this time they’re simple patterns, perfect for beginners. I’m just having a little fun experimenting with patterns right now. I really enjoy doing that. My daughter-in-law doesn’t just want the dishcloths for washing dishes, wiping down the table, and things like that—she also uses them as washcloths. So I’m making her a whole set for Christmas. That means there will be more to come with different patterns.

November Projects and October Projects 2021, Part 3: the Crazypatterns Crafting Group

Ines, I just admired your Filly mouse in the other thread. It turned out really cute and will bring joy to many this Christmas. I know that too — I wasn’t allowed to knit everything for my grandchildren either, especially when it came to colors. Parents already have their own ideas and preferences. But it is more than just socks and hats.

Ruth, your temperature blanket looks really beautifully colorful and vibrant now. What will it be used for once it’s finished? I could easily imagine it as a long table runner.

Christina, the dishcloths — which can also be used as washcloths — are knitted from pure cotton. I use Drops recycled cotton for them. It’s a bit firmer too, so not quite as soft. That works very well for cloths like these. They measure 20 x 20 cm before washing. After washing, they measure 19 x 19 cm. I think that’s quite good because it makes them a little sturdier.

Christina, what lovely thing are you making for Lynn? It already looks really great. I really need to make something in DF again—my fingers are already itching. But first, I’ve still got a few dishcloths to make; they’re really addictive.
The baby onesie is size 62/68, and if it’s knitted longer, it will still fit for quite a while. I’ll start writing the pattern tomorrow. You can see a photo of it on the baby right below here.

Andrea, yes, the dishcloths are knitted only in a knit-and-purl pattern, all different. There will be more to come. I’m sure you can manage them too.

Anja, the old patterns somehow always come back into fashion. I know that too, what you described. Your desire to knit will surely come back; sometimes you just have to feel unmotivated. But you’ve been writing diligently here, which is great too.

So, I finished the baby onesie today. This is what it looks like now with the baby wearing it. Paula feels sooo cozy in it, ready for a ride in the stroller (if she were a real baby).

And this is my dishcloth collection so far; the 4th one is currently on the needles. Then there are still 2 more balls waiting.

Finally arrived—Germany has us back

Dear Andrea,

I, too, want to say thank you for sharing so many glimpses of your return home with us. It seems like the blue sky moved here with you. Some of the photos really remind me of Norway, and I actually had to look twice.

We live in the countryside surrounded by so much nature, and I’d miss that in the city. But the most important thing for everyone is to feel comfortable wherever you are. And now you have something that makes you especially happy. You can visit your family anytime and hug them. How wonderful! You’ve missed that for long enough.

Enjoy this time now. Christmas is coming soon, and I’m sure you’ll celebrate it with extra joy and appreciation this year.

Warm regards

Steffi, I really like your sweater. It’s worth finishing it. Maybe it’ll even become one of your favorites.

Marion, your doily already looks promising. I think this technique is really beautiful, but I haven’t crocheted it myself yet. And you’ve already finished more! The collar turned out great, too. By the way, I like the design as well.

Anja, keep at it! We’re all really looking forward to seeing the finished piece!

Christina, oh no! That’s so frustrating. But yarn and cats—that’s just a combination that’s very hard to keep apart. Yes, Anja’s right—untangling it really is meditative. I’ve done it plenty of times, even without a cat.

And I actually started the third dishcloth last night and am almost done with it now. Here’s what it looks like. (I already showed the second one up above.)

And I’m almost done with the baby winter suit, too. Tomorrow I’ll add the hood and then the buttons. I think it’s totally adorable. By the way, the ball of yarn was wound so that one color followed another, in random order. You can achieve the same effect with leftover balls of yarn in different colors.

My new favorite music

Yes, Ina, I have songs like that too, and listening to them is a special moment.
It’s true—I’m listening to CDs less and less these days. It’s often music I have on my computer. There’s such wonderful music on YouTube that often lasts over 3 hours or more—relaxation music. I play that in the background when I’m writing, too. “Soothing Relaxing”—that’s what the music is called… very beautiful sounds with fantastic videos and images to go with them. There are lots of different tracks, and I like them all.

Wow, Marlies, the quantity and variety of pumpkins is really impressive. By the way, I just got a great tip for the pumpkins that aren’t eaten. After Halloween, the animals in the forest will be happy to have them. But they have to be cut up first so no animal gets its head stuck inside.

That way, they at least serve a purpose.

Wow, there’s a lot going on here again!

Ruth, your grain pillow bear is adorably cute. He looks really great in his new outfit.

I’m making the dishcloths from Drops recycled cotton. I’m just realizing it’s perfect for that. I’ve already washed the first one and it came out really well. And it was dry very quickly after washing. I think my daughter-in-law will absolutely love it. The second one is already finished too—I’ll show it further down. I’ll cast on the third one by tomorrow at the latest.

Sonja and Christina, what a lovely photo of you! Even your clothes go really well together color-wise. By the way, I think it’s really great that so many people here are meeting in person.
Christina, that’s roughly how I imagined you would look too. ;-)

Christina, you brand-new grandma, what a joy! I wish you and your little granddaughter all the best, and I already wish the two of you lots of joy together. Well, I’m assuming you’ll surely want to knit quite a few things for the little one. Does she live near you, so you can see her often?

Sandra, your raccoon Christmas wreath for the kindergarten looks fantastic! Did you design it yourself? I can definitely imagine you doing that.

I’m busy finishing up knitting the baby suit. Since the 100 g of yarn is turning out to be a bit tight after all, I had to look through my leftovers for some that match well. Luckily, I found something. Tomorrow I’ll take an up-to-date photo—possibly even one of it finished.

And here is dishcloth No. 2; it will be washed tomorrow. The yarn for the 3rd one is already ready. That one will be purple.

Have a lovely evening, everyone, and enjoy the weekend!

Yarn Swap Package

Oh wowww, I’d love that package, too! I’m already really excited to see what’s in store for me when the time comes. It’s almost like an early Christmas.

Ina’s packages are always something really special. I speak from experience. :)))
Ruth, this is going to be an experience!

I’m also looking forward to the next photo now.
