Spring Decorations 2021

You can already start crocheting a colorful spring meadow for your dining table. Crocheting this will instantly put you in a springtime mood.

The spring meadow set includes placemats, coasters, floral decorations, and various styles of egg cups and egg cozies. It’s also a great way to use up leftover yarn.

All pieces are very easy to make, even for beginners who have crocheted before.

Ines, your Alfons looks great—almost lifelike. Where will you put him?

Ruth, your door wreath looks very pretty, too.

Wow, Marion, your vest turned out absolutely gorgeous! I really like it. You managed to finish a big project really quickly. Are you catching up on what you missed before? I could totally understand that. ;-)

Ina, and you’re outpacing all of us here with your speed. I’m always amazed at how quickly you get things done. Juna will surely walk great in her felt slippers.

I especially like the blue ones on the bottom. Too bad you’ve already made the last ones for this year. They’d be perfect for me (though in size 39).

It’s so handy that your husband sews on the soles. Mine at least punches the holes for me—that’s already a big help.

Wow, what a work of art by nature. Thanks for sharing, Ina.
I’m always amazed, too, when we go for walks now and come across such wonders.

This baby blanket, knitted with lots of love and heart, is also great to knit while watching TV. You only need to pay attention around the heart pattern; most of it is easy to work on in the background.

It is knitted from fluffy, soft merino wool. Simply cozy for the little darling to snuggle up in.

What are you excited about right now?

Right now, I’m fascinated by the hedgehog in our garden, which we get to watch eating every day. Now we’re going to build him a cozy bed of straw and leaves so he can go into hibernation safely in November.

I’m also fascinated by the colorful leaves on and under the trees. I love this time of year.

Winter is coming

What a huge difference! It’s almost spring-like here, though only for a few hours a day. We just went for a walk in beautiful sunshine and a temperature of 15 degrees. Tomorrow it’ll be even warmer. At times like this, I’m really glad to live in southern Germany. I’m not quite ready for winter yet, even though it’s currently 3 degrees at night. That’s why our hedgehogs go out to eat during the day. We just saw him munching again a little while ago—though this time he was inside his little house.

Marion, you did a great job with your house spirit—I’m sure it’ll keep a good watch over things. What a wonderful and cute idea using all those different materials.

Andrea, that heart looks so pretty. I think I’ll give that a try, too.

Ina, your shoes are always a joy to look at. Especially these ones… you know why. ;-) I wouldn’t have been able to make them as well—and above all, as quickly and perfectly—as you did. Can you believe it? The dark blue sweater is actually for me! Linja is getting one made from red-orange sock yarn. I’ll show it to you soon.
The blue yarn is actually an unwanted one, since it’s been sitting around in my stash for quite a while. And since there are 10 skeins of pure wool, I’m just going to knit myself a sweater out of it. I love wearing pure wool clothes in the winter,

Encounter with Our Hedgehog in the Garden

Oh, my dears, I’m so happy that you’re sharing in my joy. We stood there yesterday as if rooted to the spot and couldn’t tear ourselves away from watching him eat. Then my husband quickly went into the apartment and grabbed the camera. That’s how we were able to capture these beautiful moments. We’re also happy that our hedgehog looks well-fed and will surely make it through the winter just fine.

By the way, we only started feeding him after a hedgehog was sitting under our bird feeder in the middle of winter. Back then, we contacted the hedgehog rescue center, which advised us to set up a little house like this outside for the food. The cats would always steal the cat food, though. So we looked for special hedgehog food and found some.

I’ve done a lot of research on hedgehogs. With these nighttime temperatures, they can hardly find any food anymore. But they need it to survive hibernation. They can’t go into hibernation, though, until the temperature stays consistently below 5 degrees day and night for a few days. Since we’ve been doing this—also in the spring to help them gain weight, by the way—we haven’t had any sick or skinny hedgehogs in our garden anymore.

We also have a garden with lots of overgrown corners. In one of these corners, we’re going to put down some straw and then add small twigs, leaves, and so on. That’s where they can go to sleep.

By the way, we also made a short video, but unfortunately I can’t upload it here (at least I don’t think I can). I’m sure you’d enjoy it, too.

Encounter with Our Hedgehog in the Garden

We always feed our hedgehogs in the fall so they can go into hibernation round and healthy. For that, we cut a small entrance door into a flower bowl, and the food is placed underneath it.

Today we came into the garden and one of our hedgehogs was sitting in the feeding house looking for food. Since the bowl was already empty, we quickly put a filled bowl next to the little house. And then we watched him with such joy as he munched and munched ... it was simply so lovely to see.

I’d like to share this joy with you here and show you our hedgehog. By the way, the food is available at Dehner (also online). It has the most natural composition, and our hedgehogs like it best.

If you had unlimited time for crafts, what would you do?

Since I’m retired but still work freelance on the side, my time for crafting is unfortunately limited.

If I had unlimited time, I’d actually start sewing again. I really enjoyed that many years ago. Plus, I could bring many of my ideas to life—ideas that are just swirling around in my head right now. Somehow, it feels like paradise to me.

I don’t think I’ll ever lose my passion for it. This hobby is simply too versatile for that.

One of our friends once said to me during a visit: “You knit or crochet just about everything that doesn’t get away fast enough.” That really made me laugh, because there are so many knitted and crocheted things all around us. ....... And just looking around, I’m already getting a new idea for what I can make with my leftover yarn. :-)

What do you usually do while doing crafts?

I feel exactly the same way as Ina. I could have written almost all of that myself. The only thing missing for me is the sunroom—that would certainly be nice.

When I’m working on tricky parts or have something new in mind, I need absolute quiet. If it’s simple patterns or sections, I’ll sometimes listen to music—mostly my own CDs—or even audiobooks. And I also really enjoy just letting my thoughts wander. That’s why knitting or crocheting is very meditative for me.

In the evenings, I like to knit while watching movies. That’s when I usually make good progress. That’s also why I always have at least two projects in progress—one that’s easy and one that requires more attention.

Wow, there’s a lot going on here! Such great things again!

Andrea, your monster looks cute, almost huggable because you feel sorry for it. ;-)

Ruth, your keychains are sure to bring lots of joy.

Ina, the felted shoes look suuuper! My husband is already really looking forward to them! They’re exactly his colors.

Christina, your wrist warmers turned out absolutely fantastic. I haven’t dared to try double-face yet, but I will. It really does appeal to me.

Marion, you know I’m already excited to see your knitted vest. I’m sure it will be beautiful again.

I’ve now almost finished the body of the sweater for Linja. Now just the sleeves and the collar are missing. Oh, and then a decoration.

Now I’ll show you all the progress on my own sweater (my UFO). It’s growing slowly but steadily and looks like this now. It’s dark blue and has white stripes at the bottom and gray stripes on the body.

Do you like fall?

Wow, what beautiful pictures! Ina, I really enjoyed strolling through your garden. What a joy! All these vibrant colors right now—everything is glowing with color. Thank you too, Marlene, for the tour.

I love fall just as much as I love spring. This time of year is full of romance. I also love it when things get a little calmer and quieter. A hot cup of tea and candlelight, accompanied by the clatter of knitting needles—simply heavenly.

Today I ran into our hedgehog in the garden. We always feed him in the fall so he’ll be well-nourished through the winter. Now I finally got to watch him eat. So cute!

Have a wonderful week, everyone! It’s going to be pleasantly warm again here over the next few days. Time to get some gardening done.

My goodness, you’re all so hard at work! There’s really a lot going on here—how wonderful!

Marlene, the pattern on your wrist warmers looks great. I love patterns like that. They often just come to me while I’m knitting—just like that.

Andrea, your washing machine cover looks great. That’s a fantastic idea. I’ve also taken a look at the corner-to-corner technique. I’m interested in that, too. I’ll have to try it sometime.

Petra, that piece in your bread basket looks great too. Another idea I’ll have to try—our bread basket could use a pretty lining as well.

Ina, your shoes look fantastic in white, too. But right now, that would be a bit too “dull” for me. ;-)

I’m now working on the front button placket of Linja’s sweater. It involves a lot of math, but I think I’ll have it done by tomorrow. Then just the sleeves and the collar. Finally, I’ll add an appliqué. We’ll see—I really want to finish it this month.

I hope you all enjoy knitting, crocheting, sewing, or whatever else you like to do.

It sounds strange, but right now I love this fall weather, even when it’s a little gloomy. Over the summer, I left so many things lying around the apartment because I’d rather be in the garden. And now I’m finally getting around to it. There’s a lot to tidy up, and quite a bit is waiting for me on the computer, too. And of course, I look forward to knitting every day.
