what do you usually do while doing crafts? Do you watch TV or enjoy a cozy cup of tea while crocheting, knitting, or sewing? I personally like to listen to music while crocheting. I find it very relaxing. Sometimes I also listen to the radio—I prefer Deutschlandfunk. That way, I stay pretty well informed about the news. So, what do you guys do on the side? I’m looking forward to your answers.
When I’m sewing, I concentrate so hard that I don’t even hear the radio anymore, and when I’m done, I wonder who turned it on ;-) :-)
Since I don’t knit from patterns—or only very rarely—I also watch TV while I’m at it, because I only knit in the evening anyway.
when I'm tinkering with new things, any noise bothers me—so the TV and radio are off. I work with total concentration, like Akela, and forget everything around me—even eating and drinking. If the TV is on in the background because my husband is watching something, my brain blocks it out as much as possible.
I like sitting in my conservatory best. There's a large round table there that usually looks very "lived in." That's also where I have the best light.
When I'm just knitting or crocheting without having to pay attention to anything, I like to listen to an audiobook or a movie on my iPAD for entertainment. Right now I'm watching the new "Babylon episodes." But I also like silence while doing crafts. It helps me switch off, and all sorts of thoughts sort themselves out in my head along the way.
No matter what I’m working on, the radio has to be on. I need music. I even listen to my hometown radio station here, so I’m well-informed. Everything just goes better with music; otherwise, it would be too quiet for me.
Except when I’m sewing on the sewing machine (which is rare at the moment) — then I sit in the kitchen by the window, where we have a small table and two chairs, and the cord reaches the nearby outlet, so I don’t need the radio there.
Ina, you’re doing it right. Your sunroom is a dream spot for crafts — you’re indoors, but still have a view of the greenery, and when the sun shines in, it’s perfect.
I feel exactly the same way as Ina. I could have written almost all of that myself. The only thing missing for me is the sunroom—that would certainly be nice.
When I’m working on tricky parts or have something new in mind, I need absolute quiet. If it’s simple patterns or sections, I’ll sometimes listen to music—mostly my own CDs—or even audiobooks. And I also really enjoy just letting my thoughts wander. That’s why knitting or crocheting is very meditative for me.
In the evenings, I like to knit while watching movies. That’s when I usually make good progress. That’s also why I always have at least two projects in progress—one that’s easy and one that requires more attention.
Since we don’t have a TV that you can just switch on (meaning I can’t remember how to operate our TV setup), I don’t do anything else on the side. I’m in my own world, enjoying the peace and quiet, and of course I’m constantly counting my stitches.
Hey there....
Well, for me, either the radio is on veeeery quietly (NDR Easy Sounds, without commercials or news), or I’m sitting in my room with my cat. (With a wool blanket over my feet and the cat hiding underneath it)
I prefer quiet—probably because when my husband is home, something has to be on everywhere: the radio in the kitchen, the TV in the living room, and the radio in the bathroom… and all on different stations 😕
So I really enjoy the peace and quiet when I find time in the morning to do some crafts...
