Crocheting / knitting / sewing an opaque pattern

When it comes to crocheting, there aren’t that many options.
You can often achieve true opacity with single crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches, and perhaps even crossed stitches (i.e., crocheting the second stitch in front of the first).
You can also achieve beautiful opaque patterns using the tapestry technique, where you crochet patterns with multiple colors—and it’s sturdy, too (though it’s better suited for bags; it’s too stiff for shirts).

Autumn Vibes

It’s nice to be able to bring you a little joy with pictures from afar.
Yes, the leaves are almost all gone from the trees.
You can’t really tell from the photos, but it was pretty windy, which is why we wore our winter jackets for the first time.
It’s also around 4 degrees in the morning. Winter is just around the corner.

Thanks, Ina—yes, that’s the crisp air here.

Wishing everyone a pleasant week anyway

Best regards, Andrea

Autumn Vibes

Yesterday we went for a lovely fall walk. The sun even came out.
I took a few pictures for you, including some of the sunset. See for yourselves.

How do you celebrate Advent and Christmas?

My husband and I will once again be sitting comfortably at home by ourselves, with a few Christmas decorations, some cookies, enjoying a nice cup of coffee, and watching fairy tale movies.
Since no one can really travel, our children and parents won’t be able to come visit either.
It’ll be a day just like any other. It’s hard to feel that real Christmas spirit. Everything is different this year.

Wedding cake with filling as a wedding gift

I agree, Monika—it really looks good enough to eat.
Wow, Ina, you’ve created a masterpiece there, and just think of all the work that went into it.
It’s actually far too good to break apart—seriously. Such lovely details you’ve included—great job. I love it.
May I ask how heavy this cake is? It certainly can’t be easy to transport. :-)

Well, I wish the future bride and groom all the best, and despite these difficult times, a wonderful celebration.
It’s almost a magical date, 10/10/20.
My brother’s birthday is on 10/10, so I’ll be thinking of you guys then and imagining the look on their faces when your delicious cake makes its appearance. I think that’s so great of you.

Warmest regards from me

Weekend plans? Have fun, everyone.

Mmm, delicious plum cake—I’ll stop by, Ina.

Unfortunately, the weather here looks pretty gloomy and rainy; the leaves are falling from the trees. You’d think it might start snowing any minute. It’s not cold, but it’s unpleasant.

So we’ll be having a quiet and relaxed weekend. Maybe we’ll work on a few unfinished crochet projects or bake a fruit tart. We’ll see. We’ll just go with the flow.

Have a nice weekend, too. Make the most of the sun while you still can. We could use a few more
rays of sunshine here before the dark season sets in—though it didn’t really get very bright today either.

Warm regards from Norway

Yarn Diet starting January 1, 2020: 1 year without buying yarn / overcoming your inner slacker. Who’s in?

Yes, I’m still in on the yarn diet, too. Little by little, I’m crocheting up leftover yarn, or using up yarn I don’t like in various projects.
I’m doing well with it—it’ll last until the end of the year, if not longer.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I’m in the mood for a story again. Everyone writes 3 words to continue the story.
I’ll start with:Once upon a time...”

Now it’s your turn. I’m sure it’ll turn into a crazy story in the end, because no one knows what the next person will “add.” Have fun, and thanks in advance for joining in.

C2C / corner to corner / corner to corner

I’m currently crocheting with this C2C technique—or rather, trying it out again—and it’s a ton of fun. You mostly just crochet chain stitches (Ch), slip stitches (Slst), and double crochets (Dc).

With variegated yarn, you can create wonderful diagonal stripe effects, or try this “pixel crochet” technique for images—though I haven’t tried that yet.
This “square pattern structure” works wonderfully for many projects, and I think it looks great.
This technique could also be an alternative to the entrelac technique, just on a smaller scale (because of the squares).

Upcycling Tealight Holders

I have something else to show you here.
These colorful plastic pieces originally held a tea light. I thought they were too nice to throw away, so I covered them with little popsicle sticks. You can use them as small flower pots or make a little fountain by placing a wire hoop over them. Drill a hole in the long pieces, and then you can hang them up. Or you can use the original tea light—or an electric one, though that doesn’t quite fit inside.

Good luck with it, Petra,

and many thanks to Wollefaden for the quick help.

If you have any further questions or need stitch details, I’d be happy to help. (I used Järbo yarn and a size 2.25 hook).

Ruth
, your embroidered card looks beautiful. I haven’t embroidered in a long time either; I could get that out again sometime.

When do you buy?

I do it pretty much the same way as Diana. A certain “cuteness factor” also plays a small role in my decision to buy.
But with so many cute characters out there, it’s really hard to decide.
