September Projects: UFO Week, Best with Leftovers, the Popular Title Highlights plus Shopping Queen

Wow, Marion, you’ve been so productive!! The blanket turned out really pretty. :-)

I’m in a similar boat to Sandra. For some reason, September just isn’t going my way. My UFOs are staring at me every day, but I just can’t seem to get around to them. I’m pretty swamped at work right now.

And I have a thousand ideas for new things I could start ... A few days ago, I started making new slippers for myself because I really need them right now. I can work on them in between while watching movies. Everything else requires my full attention.

By the way, I’m also going to start the “Wool Diet” in October... I have so much yarn that I wouldn’t need to buy any more for the next few years.

Tell me, Sandra, what is this "Wolllust" you want to keep up for 6 months? ;-)
That sounds like a lot of piles of yarn.

I’ll post photos of everything that’s finished by the weekend.

And then I’ve decided to finally finish writing up a few unfinished patterns.

How are you doing? Weekly schedule, craft goals, weather update, (vegan) lunch

That sounds really delicious, Sandra... Spinach dumplings, hmmm.
It’s funny that you’re trying that first. My husband always has to go along with these kinds of experiments, but he loves it. Because so far, luckily, he’s liked everything—and so have I, of course.

Sandra, your grandparents will be so happy if you give them a photo book of Anton. Every year we get a big photo calendar with pictures of Linja. That way, we have her with us all year long and marvel at how she’s growing. A year really makes such a big difference.

We were invited over yesterday, and they made a vegan apple cake just for us. It was super delicious. In the next few days, I’m going to try the vegan herring salad. I’m already curious to see how it tastes.

It’s gotten cold, but I think that’s great for knitting. Let’s see what else I can get done this week.

September Projects: UFO Week, Best with Leftovers, the Popular Title Highlights plus Shopping Queen

Sofie and Mel, you’ve been really busy, wow!

Yeah, I feel the same way about the 1,000 ideas. Now I’ve actually started yet another new project - slippers for myself. I need them now, and I can also knit them on the side while watching movies.

For the other projects, I need time and peace and quiet at the point where I am with them. At least until the end of the week, I don’t have that.

Oh dear, if it weren’t for the motivation from this thread, my UFOs would be flying at me from all sides.... ;-)

Have fun, all of you, with the final push for September.

Best, Monika

If you’d rather knit doll/teddy clothes, then grab the pattern for this cute raglan sweater right away. I originally designed it for Teddy Fynn. But it fits all dolls and teddies measuring 25–30 cm.

For your leftover yarn, I have a great project that you can finish crocheting over the weekend: this cute crochet cardigan for teddy bears and dolls measuring approx. 20–25 cm.

These lucky ladybug potholders (gloves) make a great weekend project. By the way, they are the eye-catcher  in my kitchen, and people often ask me about them. They get used a lot, too—they’ve become my favorite tools in the kitchen.

You can crochet the ladybug potholders even as a beginner. The pattern explains every individual step. It’s also optimized for beginners and written without abbreviations. There is also a print version without photos.

Weekend Plans: Have a great weekend, everyone.

I also wish everyone here a lovely weekend with plenty of time for crafting. Unfortunately, I have to throw myself into the bookkeeping first ... sigh. But I’m sure there will be time for crafting too, especially now that the weather is perfect for it. That will be my reward. :-)

Sandra, a marble run really is great. My granddaughter got one for her 1st birthday too. She’s still having lots of fun with it now at 2 1/2. Well, there’s still a child in all of us.

Best regards, Monika

Thanks for sharing this birthday photo with us.

I can imagine you were glad to be rid of the grandparents again. They love to meddle, don’t they? (I know from my son... ahem)

Yellow and Orange: Sunshine in Your Heart

This bright cotton sweater is just right for little girls in fall. It has a few pretty accents, such as a collar instead of ribbing and an orange-yellow knitted-in pattern.

The sweater grows with your child from sizes 92–104. At first it can be worn like a dress or tunic, later as a regular sweater.

Suitable for advanced beginners with knitting experience. The pattern explains all the individual steps, partly with photos. It is written without abbreviations and is printer-friendly.

The little pouch for a pack of tissues is great to crochet on the go. Just pack a few cotton leftovers, a crochet hook, and you’re ready to start.

The benefits summarized:
  • Your cotton leftovers are put to good use.
  • If you crochet several, you’ll always have a small gift ready - one you can even hide little gifts in.
  • The pouch is finished very quickly.
  • You can let your imagination run wild with colors and decorations.
  • You get a pattern that even beginners (with basic knowledge) can handle well.
  • You get several variations shown.

Italian Cast-On

@Christine, thanks for your version.
I get along really well with increasing to the right, or knitting on. With a little practice, it’s really quick and easy. Right now it seems easier to me than starting with 2 strands. ;-)

Stitch poll: Starting or finishing projects? Which is more exciting?

I love the entire process, from start to finish.
Of course, starting a new project is the most exciting part, but it can also be pretty annoying at times. Especially because it usually involves a lot of calculations (measurements).

For me, the creative process is very important, because I usually develop the details of new projects as they take shape. That’s when I get lots of ideas about how it could look. And that’s really exciting. I let myself be surprised, so to speak. And then it turns out really great.

I also like the end, because then I can give the finished product as a gift or use it myself.

UFOs… well. If it weren’t for the monthly UFO thread here, I’d probably have quite a few projects lying around unfinished. It’s just more fun—and, of course, motivating—when we can show off our finished UFOs here.

Where do you do your crafts in the fall and winter?

Ina, that looks so cozy at your place. I’d like that, too.

I have several favorite spots. My favorites are, of course, the couch or the dining room table. There, I can really spread out when I need to.

I also like to visit my neighbor—we sit in her living room and knit together. That’s nice.

Every now and then, when I’m knitting or crocheting, I’ll sit in a rocking chair—either in the living room or upstairs in my study under the roof.

While I’m doing that, I listen to music or sometimes an audiobook.

It’s Anton’s birthday // It’s Arni’s son’s birthday

Dear Anton, Sandra’s son :-)

You’ve been in this beautiful world for a year now and bring so much joy to your mom and dad. There’s still so much to discover, especially once you can walk.

I’m sending you a big hug and hope you have lots of fun today with your lovely guests, with great gifts, and all the treats and surprises that come with a first birthday.

Dear Sandra,
enjoy this day—it’s truly one of a kind. It’s been a year—my goodness—since your Anton was finally in your arms. And now he’s really starting to explore the world.

I wish you and your family lots of joy with him.

Warm regards

Italian Cast-On

The Italian cast-on is interesting.

To keep the ribbing from getting too tight, I prefer the knitted cast-on. It’s very simple, comes out straight, and is nice and stretchy. And you have the advantage of starting with a short strand of yarn and not having to calculate how long the yarn needs to be at the beginning.

I also like to do it this way when I have to cast on a lot of stitches.

Best regards, Monika

@Inna,

great, thanks for the tips. Yeah, of course—I’d read that too, that they’re seaweed. At the same time, they also add flavor and give it that fishy note. I’m really curious to see how it tastes.

Speaking of egg flavor, I recently made vegan scrambled eggs using chickpea flour. They tasted absolutely delicious.

Here’s a photo from tonight with our cool RV.
Tomorrow we’re heading home—with mixed feelings (Wollberge—yay!).

Thanks for the great tips on vegan “fish,” you two. I hadn’t heard of this spice before and will definitely give it a try. It should be available at the health food store or from a vegan online retailer.

Eggplant is one of my favorite vegetables, and I always use it with the skin on. I especially like it grilled. Deliciously seasoned with garlic... hmmm. And it’s also lovely as antipasti.

This new variation is a real asset in my kitchen. It’s great what I’m learning here. :-)

Wishing you a wonderful sunny day. I’m making a point of enjoying it today out in front of the motorhome, and I’m going to get out my crochet and knitting now.

Best, Monika

Tina, I love your selfies. That way we get to see you too. :-) You look great in those hats. Your shawl looks fantastic, too.

Christina, the little angels look adorable with their pretty details.

Marion, your sensory blanket is really coming together nicely. The little bows go perfectly with it. I’ll continue crocheting my wallflower project, the little winter bear, tomorrow. Then I’ll take a few photos outside too, for example of the vest.

Today I unraveled almost an entire front panel of a sweater I’d started. My daughter-in-law gave me a whole bag full of sock yarn from her grandmother’s estate - white, black, gray, beige. The colors aren’t really my thing, but I’ll make something pretty out of it.

Mel, I’d take that pretty lightly, too. I’m often amazed at how little kids can get by on. My son grew up vegetarian and didn’t eat a lot of things back then either. That changed when he was around 14 or 15—his taste suddenly changed, and he started trying at least a few different things.

Inna, that “herring salad” made with eggplant sounds absolutely delicious, especially since I love that vegetable. I’ll look into it and give it a try. Thanks for the tip and the ingredients. :-)

We’re in the Allgäu now and decided on the spur of the moment to extend our stay by a day. Tomorrow we’ll really take a vacation—lazing around and… of course, knitting and crocheting. I’m really looking forward to it, because I’m slowly starting to get withdrawal symptoms. Even my husband has noticed that I’m missing my yarn and needles.

It doesn’t quite feel like my month yet… I’m actually missing my piles of yarn around me right now—we’re still traveling.

Instead, I’ve now started rescuing a neglected pattern. More than a year ago, I bought the pattern for the Winter Bear from Ottertaler Häkelmaus. And now I’ve brought it along on the trip and already started working on it today. However, I’m currently missing the stuffing.

Tomorrow I’ll start on the paws, the little tail, and the snout. Once I’m back home, I’ll continue with the body once I can stuff it.

You’ve already gotten so much finished. Why don’t you post your photos here for us to admire? Then we won’t have to spend so much time searching through the gallery.

We’re in Meersburg on Lake Constance until tomorrow, enjoying the amazing summer weather. Until Saturday, we were visiting our son and granddaughter. I really enjoyed cuddling with her again. :-)

Tomorrow we’ll spend one more day in the Allgäu, and on Wednesday we’re heading back home. After a week away, I’m really looking forward to it. Better internet again, the garden, raspberries… oh yes. And, of course, all my knitting and crocheting supplies in abundance, ready to go.

Right now, I’m in the middle of crocheting the Winter Bear from Ottertaler Häkelmaus. I’ve had this pattern lying around for well over a year, and now I finally want to finish it.
