Coronavirus, Sad Times

Ruth, I think that after going through this, we’re now even more grateful for everything we’ll be allowed to do again and for what we have. Because, unfortunately, you only realize that when things aren’t that way.

Yes, our grandmothers were very often single mothers, and usually with many children. They didn’t have a washing machine, a dishwasher, or a refrigerator; no TV (for distraction); no phone, etc. And yet they always managed, despite worrying about their husbands who were at war. I have the utmost respect for that! They were truly strong women! When I think about it, I can’t help but feel deeply grateful for all the comforts we have. So we can easily manage to stay home for a while. As long as we have enough wool, we can count ourselves lucky.

Coronavirus, Sad Times

@streifgetier
Oh, I can really relate to how your daughter feels. All the kids are sad right now that they can’t see their friends. My granddaughter just turned 4, and no one was allowed to visit her. The party was also canceled or postponed. It’s the first birthday she’s been fully aware of. At 11 years old, it’s even harder when you can’t celebrate this special day with friends and family.

In moments like these, I tell myself that I can be grateful that we’re all healthy and have a nice home. I’m even more aware of that right now than usual. And when I look at my parents’ lives, this really isn’t anything at all. After all, they lived through two wars.

April Projects and March Projects Part 2: The Crazypatterns Crafting Group

A warm welcome to our group, dear Gabriele! :)
I hope you have a great time here with us.

Sandra, your vegetables are simply delicious. Anton’s already getting a whole set for his toy store. At least no one will go hungry with him around. ;-)

Marlene, a summer hat will surely be needed soon. We can already count down the days until it gets warmer.

Christina, your trio looks great and goes together perfectly.

I’ve now finished the body of the cardigan I just started. I’m currently knitting the first sleeve. I’ve come to terms with the yarn cake by now, but I’m already looking forward to knitting with regular yarn again. Here’s what the cardigan looks like now:

DIY Blankets: Baby Blankets, Cozy Blankets, Mermaid Blankets

This baby blanket, made from extra-soft merino wool, is knitted with lots of love and care—and the baby who snuggles up in it is sure to feel it.

Most of it is very easy to knit, even while watching TV. Only the hearts require a little more attention.

Coronavirus, Sad Times

Dear Diana, please know that I’m sending you a big hug from the bottom of my heart. ((( ))) My heart goes out to you all...

Yesterday, a friend of ours passed away—he was the same age as my husband. That makes us very, very sad, too. Especially because we can’t hug his wife and be there for her in person. She lives about 25 km away. He died after a brief illness—NOT from the virus. It happened very suddenly. Since he will most likely be cremated, the funeral service can certainly be postponed.

What really struck us yesterday, when we found out, was how grateful we are that we’re alive and have each other right now. It’s such a precious thing not to be alone.

I’m also very grateful that we have each other here now… that you—and we—are here.

Warm regards, Monika

Creative Ways to Use Up Leftover Yarn + Leftover Yarn for Easter

The colorful spring meadow looks wonderful on the Easter table and can then stay out all spring and summer, continuing to bring joy. It consists of placemats, coasters, various egg cozy models, and scatter decorations. All pieces can be easily crocheted from leftover yarn.

Let’s enjoy spring together!

Wow, you all have such beautiful gardens and flowers… I’m amazed!

It’s been as cold as minus 5 degrees here for days, so nothing’s blooming anymore. But I saved the daffodils, and now they’re in a vase, bringing me joy. So beautiful! I also brought my neighbor a bouquet just as big. It’ll get warmer here again by the weekend, and then things will surely start sprouting here too.

How are your leftover yarns doing?

You can do a lot with leftover yarn when you don’t need to know the exact amount… and if you do, just weigh it out. I agree. Anything with stripes is always good for using up scraps or making something small.

Yes, Petra, I can imagine that’s very hard, because in situations like this, you just need people to give you a hug. But I’m sure this situation won’t last much longer. Once we’ve gotten through this, we’ll appreciate the little things in life all the more. I don’t know yet when I’ll see my two granddaughters again either. But I’m already looking forward to that moment when the time comes. In the meantime, I’m just happy to have photos.

Hang in there and look forward to the time when everything is possible again.

I’m sending you all a hug for now—for everyone who really needs it right now (((((

I’m still working on the kids’ jacket. I don’t feel like tackling any UFOs right now because I’d rather be knitting.

Monday Thread: How are you today?

Yeah, I agree with you, Perle.
I felt just like Tina this morning. We went shopping too, and it was totally relaxed. I even managed to pick up two packs of my favorite toilet paper at Müller. And everything else I wanted was there, too. Apparently, Monday morning is a good time to go.

My family and I are doing very well, since we’ve been loading up on vitamin D3 all winter long. ;-) I haven’t even had a cold since then.

Take care and do whatever makes you happy.

Oh my gosh, Marion, you’re crocheting with bobble yarn? Hats off to you! Just knitting with it is enough for me. Your shawl looks great, though—really great, actually. It seems like quite a few of us here can use up our leftover bobble yarn, so we’re snagging another title. :)

Sandra, your vegetables are just the best. They practically beg to be bitten into.

Well Claudia, I have to say, that’s quite a creative “disguise” for a toilet roll. I wonder if it will be found? ;-)

As you may have read, I had to unravel the cardigan again; I was already up to the start of the sleeves. That’s when I realized there weren’t enough stitches. Now I’ve knitted the first approx. 40 rows back up again. I’ve come to terms with the yarn by now, but I definitely won’t be getting myself another gradient yarn cake. However, I really like the result with this variegated yarn.

Sandra, your vegetables really look good enough to eat. Definitely looks like Ruth’s style... ;-)

Have a great weekend

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your beautiful photos and glimpses into your lives.
Now I get to see Anton’s bag in action on his balance bike. Awesome! Yes, Anton has really grown.

Perle, your home reminds me of a little witch’s cottage that invites you to linger and explore. It’s sooo cozy there—I’d love it too. I really like all those “knick-knacks”—as some might say.

Ruth, your home looks beautiful and really brings that springtime feeling.

Andrea, thank you for letting us enjoy the beautiful nature around your home. There will be other times again when we can enjoy all of this together with friends and family. Only… then we’ll be able to appreciate it all the more with gratitude.

Ina, I really love your home too—at least what I’ve seen so far. A gazebo like that would be on my wish list as well. You can already look forward to that.

I wish you all a wonderful Sunday. Do what brings you joy and take good care of yourselves.

First-day-of-school photos of ourselves

I felt exactly the same way, Ruth. I always got a D in needlework. I never felt like making the things we had to reproduce there. And what I really didn’t like were those long metal knitting needles. They felt so heavy and clunky. That’s why I’m doubly glad that there are now circular needles made of wood or bamboo.

I didn’t like sewing in school either. That only changed when I started sewing clothes for my son. Money was tight back then, so he always wore nice, modern clothes.

Perle, you’re starting with different treats now too. I’m excited to see what else you’ll make. It already looks really delicious.

I’m just going to see the unraveling for what it is: a chance to work up the Bobbel better now. The practice piece was just a bit big. ;-) Now I’m just working my way upward again. ;-)

First-day-of-school photos of ourselves

You all have such great photos. I think this trip down memory lane is awesome, too, and I love looking through my old photo albums as well. So I went looking and found a photo taken on my first day of school. Here I am standing in front of our house—but unfortunately without my school cone. My mom sewed the outfit herself, just like everything else I used to wear back then. A class photo was also taken that day—I’m sitting in the back row and I’m not very easy to see.

And here’s a photo that was taken even before I started school. I must have been about 5 years old there.

There are also some Carnival photos of me—I’ll try to find them. My mom always sewed really beautiful costumes for me—once even as a “Tanzmariechen.” I must have been about 14 years old then. Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos from before that.

Petra, your soap saver looks great.

Today I was knitting in the garden and—oh no, I’ve earned myself the title of Frogging Queen.

Once upon a time, there was the beginning of a child’s cardigan, and it already looked like this:

And this is what’s left of it now:

Oh well. Unfortunately, I only just noticed that I had miscounted when picking up the stitches, and there were too few stitches. So now I’m just seeing it as a practice piece for knitting with a gradient yarn cake.

So let’s start over, this time in the right size. ;-)

Craft Magazines

Ever since I discovered CP, I haven’t bought any magazines. I used to be the same way—only one pattern in each issue would catch my interest. I just need pictures to go with them; otherwise, I find it hard to follow along.

I still have some old magazines lying around, and I flip through them when I need specific size measurements. My granddaughters don’t live with me, so I know the measurements roughly.

Two years ago, a friend gave me a very valuable old craft book that was just sitting around at her place. It’s a real treasure trove of inspiration, especially when it comes to patterns. Here’s an example: I tried to knit a pattern based on a 60-year-old children’s jacket. No chance—the jacket was pretty matted. The pattern wasn’t in any of the newer books or magazines either. But… I found it in this book and was thrilled.

These days, when I need a pattern, I look here on CP. It’s simply the best for me. I’m so happy to have found this site.

Take care and stay safe.

I really enjoyed this day, starting with brunch on the terrace and followed by some knitting in the garden. Sunshine, warmth, the birds singing—it was so relaxing, almost like a vacation.
