Decor & Functional Items / April 2020 Issue

These cute gnomes are not just decorations or toys for children. They can be used in so many ways. For example, as gift packaging, a fun egg cozy, for small utensils, as an Advent calendar, and much more.

A really lovely stash-busting project that’s perfect to crochet in the garden or on the patio.

There is also a house for the gnomes that is just as versatile. For example, as a utensil basket or as a bread roll basket — together with the gnomes as egg cups. There are no limits to your imagination here.

Suitable for beginners — with basic knowledge.

The house and the gnomes are also available individually.

Now that the whole family is home, everyone wants some peace and quiet now and then—and to simply close the door to their room. Whether it’s a kids’ room, home office, restroom, or bathroom—these two door guards do a great job of keeping things in order and clearly signal whether visitors are welcome or not.

It’s best to crochet both right away—the bear and the owl. They make the perfect Easter gift.

Both are quick and easy to crochet using leftover yarn. They’re also available individually in my pattern shop.

How do you celebrate Easter? Do you have time for crafts over the holidays?

We’re going to take a walk—nature is right behind our house. And of course, we’ll be spending time in the garden, and I’m enjoying the time I have for crafts. I’m getting photos and videos from my grandchildren almost every day right now. It’s really lovely.

This first baby jacket is knitted in a traditional style from thicker cotton and fits up to about 6 months. Later, it will go to the baby doll. :)

The jacket features a pretty heart-shaped lace pattern and a hood, so a hat isn’t necessary.

What’s exciting you right now?

For almost a year now, I’ve been baking using only a tiny bit of yeast and yeast water. I keep refreshing the yeast water, and it’s still the same original batch. It works great! However, I do let the bread or rolls rise for longer.

Now I only need 1/4 of the yeast I would have used otherwise. If I can’t get any more yeast at all, I’ll try making it without any. That should work too—I’ll just let it rise longer.

I think you can find the recipe for yeast water on several websites, including Smarticular.

By the way, we’ve been baking our own bread and rolls in various styles for a very long time. It tastes much better, and I know exactly what’s in it. It’s become very quick and almost effortless.

Right now, everyone is at home, and it’s quite common for everyone to want some peace and quiet in their own room. That’s where a fun little door guard comes in handy, because it clearly shows whether entry is welcome — like a traffic light. Children especially love it.

Oh Claudia, that makes me sad, too... The belated celebration is sure to be especially lovely.
The gift looks simply enchanting, and I’d be thrilled to receive it, especially since birds are my favorite animals. You’ve really brought a very special idea to life.

The summer hat came along nicely today on the patio in the most beautiful sunshine. At the same time, I think I’ll knit some socks for myself using the leftover yarn from the sweater. Now that I’ve given away most of my socks, I realize I could use some myself.

Stay strong even in times of coronavirus: become the Perseverance King/Queen
[x ] I’m staying strong, meeting the current requirements (disinfecting, keeping my distance, staying home, etc.), not losing courage, and hoping for the best. I’m already looking forward to the time when we can visit the grandchildren.

UFOs I don’t have any; I finished everything that was currently on the needles. Only one crochet UFO is still floating around, and I’ll get to that at some point.

Best of the Leftovers in March: leftover yarn upcycling is great
For the cardigan for my granddaughter, I knitted up yarn I didn’t really like, as well as various leftovers.

I haven’t bought any yarn since December 2019 and want to keep that up until the end of the year (inner-pig-dog tamer).

  • a colorful pinafore skirt for my granddaughter
  • A doll sweater with headband
  • a cardigan for the little granddaughter

[x ] In March, I created a new pattern for the always-current

and am therefore a well-deserved yarn rescuer
I worked with a gradient yarn cake for the first time and realized that I don’t love it at all. This yarn had been lying around at my place for quite a while.

Unraveling Monster Tamer in March
[ ] In March, I partially or completely (multiple times) unraveled an unfinished handmade item / a project or one or more UFOs and then finished it after all. I am therefore an unraveling monster tamer.
The new cardigan for my little granddaughter was half finished, and I had to unravel it because I had miscounted when picking up the stitches.

Gardening Season / Start of the 2020 Gardening Season
[x ] I had pleasant cozy-blanket evenings.

[ x] I made use of sunny moments (if there were any) and had lots of fun in the garden / on the balcony, etc.

Petra, your blanket is a real work of art—at least in my eyes. That really takes a lot of perseverance.

My Bobbel project is finished today too, yay. I was able to completely finish the cardigan today, including the buttons and weaving in the ends. This is what it looks like now.

How are you doing? Are you happy with March?

Since I was born in March, it’s always one of my favorite months. Regardless of what’s going on in the world, I made the best of it, and yes, it was still a wonderful month for me. I’ve become so much more grateful for all the good things in my life—that I’m healthy and that my family and I have everything we need.

I hope everyone here is doing well. Everything will change for the better; our world will be different—better. That’s my deepest feeling.
