Openwork Patterns // Lace Patterns

This crochet cowl has a very simple lace pattern. It’s an almost meditative craft project, but nevertheless fun. My original is made from sock yarn. But that’s not a must; other yarns work well too.

Please follow the link to the pattern.

Crafts in 2018: What projects would you like to complete this year?

I’d love to finish my summer top before summer is over. Actually, there isn’t that much left to do.

Handmade Bags: Do You Need a New Bag?

You can never have too many bags—for shopping, for the beach, for everyday use. And the best part is that you can knit them yourself.
This pattern is available for different yarn weights. It’s knitted in the round and features a pretty onion pattern, which is explained both in written instructions and in a knitting chart.

Here’s the pattern.

New in June + May 29, 30, and 31

I'll quickly sneak one more in here: my new shawl. It's so easy that you could even knit it in your sleep. My original is made from sock yarn, but basically you can knit it from any yarn you like and in any size you like.

Here’s the pattern.

Knot in the Yarn

1–2 knots are normal; that just happens in machine production. But if there are more than that, you can certainly complain to the manufacturer.
Be sure to cut it out when working with the yarn. The risk that the knot will come undone later is too high.

Red, Rose, Purple, and Pink: The Girls’ Thread in June

This triangular shawl is romantically playful and so easy to knit that I’d even recommend it to beginners. If you can do knit stitches, just go for it! Girls can do it!

You can find the pattern here.

How are you all doing?

Monika, do you also use vegan yarn, or is your dietary choice more because animal products don’t agree with you?
There was a series of documentaries on TV recently about how our food is produced. When I saw some of those meat producers, I thought to myself, “Actually, I don’t want to use my money to support that at all”—which is exactly what I’m doing every time I shop. Especially since the farmers see the very least of all that money, and most of it just makes a few big industrialists rich.

Knitting a Linen Stitch

I’m familiar with linen stitch from knitting; it’s a pattern where you slip stitches with the working yarn in front. This creates an effect that’s somewhat reminiscent of woven fabrics. These patterns aren’t usually very stretchy and are well-suited for items that need to be durable—like socks, for example.

New in May and patterns from April 28, 29, and 30

My new knitting pattern can be used as a wide scarf or rectangular stole. A lace pattern that depicts flowers adds variety while knitting. The pattern is written out row by row and also shown in a knitting chart.

You can find it here.

Beach Vibes with Mermaids and Flamingos

You’ll need at least a small bag when you go to the beach to carry your essentials—bikini, sunscreen, towel, and some change for ice cream. How about a bag that matches the ocean? The fish are included.
For this, you’ll need cotton yarn—preferably blue and yellow—with a yardage of 125m per 50g, a 3mm circular needle, and a matching crochet hook for the handles. The fish are shown in a knitting chart.

And you can find the pattern here.

Popular Patterns Clearly Explained: Honeycomb Pattern

I think “honeycomb pattern” is a very broad term, because you can create honeycombs in all sorts of different ways. A few weeks ago, I knitted a scarf in a honeycomb pattern—I just need to quickly see where I have a photo of it.

In the broadest sense, it’s a cable pattern. But there are surely many other ways to knit—or even crochet—something like this.

Bravo has about 133–135 m per 50 g, depending on when it was made, and is 100% acrylic. There’s also a thicker version, but that’s called Bravo Big.
Schachenmayr offers several Merino yarns with a wide variety of yardage. Perhaps the author of the pattern can help with that.

Lace Patterns / Lace Shawls for Spring and Summer

Spring and summer are popular times to get married. If any of you have ambitions in that direction, a festive shawl is a must!
This triangular shawl is knitted from sock-weight yarn. The pattern is written out row by row and also shown in several knitting charts. Two different lace patterns are used, which also stand out from each other in color.

You can find the pattern here.

Lace Patterns: Exciting new designs online.

A lace stole made from cotton yarn is ideal for spring. When a cool breeze still blows now and then, it's nice to have something to snuggle into.
This pattern can be very easily adapted to your personal needs. You can make it wider or narrower, and knit it longer or shorter.

I can’t remember at the moment where I read that again: puff sleeves! But apparently not until next year. No idea how they can know that so precisely a whole year in advance.

Easter Bunny

I can still remember very clearly the day I lost my belief in the Christ Child. I was still pretty young then. But I had an older brother (who I still have today). He showed me the secret box where our parents had hidden the Christmas presents. I was a little disappointed, but that was the end of my belief in the Christ Child.
I then bragged to my friends about what I knew. A few other kids stopped believing in the Christ Child, too. So I don’t think it’s all that unlikely for a young child not to believe in the Easter Bunny or the Christ Child—and it’s not always the parents’ or the way they were raised that is to blame.

Fringes and Tassels

This scarf is special because it has fringe on the sides rather than at the ends. It is crocheted with very thick wool (the pattern basically also works with thinner yarns), so it’s a crochet project that’s finished in no time. Also very suitable for beginners!

You can find the pattern here.

Triangular Shawls / Stoles: Working with Bobbel + Gradient Yarn

Designing Lace Patterns

Well, whether my lace patterns are phenomenal is for others to decide. For me, the yarn is always there first, and then I decide what it’s suitable for. Then a vague idea comes to mind, and I start knitting. Knitting can also be replaced with crocheting.
So I knit a few rows and take a look at the whole thing. If I’m satisfied—which happens every now and then—I keep knitting; if not, I start over or scrap the idea.
What I think is important with lace patterns is being able to “read” your own work—that is, recognizing what you did in the previous rows and what might fit in there now. It’s also important to understand how individual stitches behave and what kind of pattern they create. And then, of course, those stitches have to come together to form a cohesive whole.
But that’s not just important for lace patterns—it applies whenever you want to design something yourself. You simply have to know what happens when you do this or that. It’s probably the same for every design process.

Warm material?

Sheep’s wool and alpaca. Animal fibers more so than plant-based ones.
If you want to avoid animal products, you might turn to polyester. For me, the downside is that it isn’t very breathable—though on cold winter days, that can actually be an advantage.
