I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, trying to figure out if I can spot any trends, and it’s really hard to say. When you’re in circles where a lot of people knit or crochet, you just notice that everyone is knitting or crocheting. You don’t really notice the ones who aren’t.
When I’ve been talking to non-knitters lately, the word “upcycling” has come up quite often. Apparently, there are now dedicated clubs that hold regular meetings. But it’s also possible that this is more of a local phenomenon.

It looks really nice—great colors!

I’m always looking around to see what people are wearing, and I have to be honest—I’ve never really noticed dragon tail shawls. I think they’re fun to knit or crochet, but hardly anyone actually wears them. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).
What I’m noticing at the moment are short loop scarves, closed at the back and tapering to a point at the front. I’m seeing this for the first time this year, especially among young girls.

Of course, I had to stop by a yarn shop in Vienna :-)

I also have a UFO. I think I started it in January, and I’m about halfway done now. So I definitely won’t finish it by the end of the month!

I’ve used it once before, but it’s been a long time. As far as I can remember, I really liked it. It feels kind of like a cross between viscose and cotton. Now I have to think about what I made with it. In any case, it was a pleasant material.

I’m okay :-) The weather was pretty lousy today, so I was only outside for a short time. But I’m already looking forward to a few days of vacation. The start of spring is celebrated in Vienna.

Congratulations on your special day! And enjoy those chips!

By the way, I went to the lake once last week, but I haven’t seen any frogs yet this year.

In 3 days I’m heading to Vienna, and I’d rather take something with me that doesn’t require too much concentration. A simple shawl, maybe.

My grandmother taught me to crochet, and my mother taught me to knit—and that was long before the Internet age. Overall, I was completely satisfied with what was available back then. Does anyone else remember the 3 Pagen catalogs? Or was that a purely Austrian thing? These were catalogs with patterns, and what made them special was that you could then order the corresponding yarn from 3 Pagen. Short strands of yarn in every color were stapled into the catalog, so you could feel them and see the exact colors. My mom would send in an order every now and then (basically the offline version of online shopping), and then I was allowed to pick out a design—along with the yarn—that I wanted to knit. The only condition was that I had to finish knitting my project before I could get new yarn.
To answer the question now: back then, I would have liked to have had more yarn, just to experiment with, the way I like to do today. On the other hand, this approach was also very efficient. Thanks to it, I never developed a fear of more complicated patterns. If it was difficult, you just had to push through it—otherwise, there would be no new yarn.

You’re all so fast—I can’t even keep up with looking at everything. Christina, that’s an adorable gift.
But the princesses, socks, doll dresses, and chickens turned out great, too!

Thank you all so much for the compliments on the embroidered picture. They’re supposed to be crocuses. Last week (when it was still spring), I took this photo and then created a counted chart using the colors I had on hand. I’m using regular cotton scraps. Here’s what the original looks like:



Monika, you’ve been so busy! I especially like the crocheted cover for the jar.

I’ve already missed half of it again, so first of all, a big round of applause for everyone who’s finished their projects. Anton has really grown a lot! I’m glad he likes Seppi and Granny so much.
I also really like the set for Sternchen.
And hopefully everyone who was sick is healthy again by now!

Adding the images works for me via drag and drop. I simply drag them to the place where I want them to be.

Could it be that this is simply a misunderstanding and that they actually mean chain stitches? In English, those are called “chain,” which translates to “Kette” in German. Slip stitches are called “slip stitch” in English.
If that’s not the problem, please ignore me.

I’ve been a little quiet lately—sorry about that. For some reason, knitting just isn’t as much fun for me right now. It was always something I did when my husband was around, and now that he’s not here anymore, I just can’t really get into knitting either. Maybe that will change again sometime.
Instead, I’m spending a lot of time outdoors (not today, though—it’s snowing), taking photos, reading a lot, talking on the phone a lot, and meeting up with friends. I’ve got to fill the void somehow. Lately, I’ve rediscovered embroidery, and I’m really enjoying it. I used to do that a lot before I met my husband. My first little embroidered picture is just taking shape. Maybe I’ll start painting again, too—we’ll see.
But there’s always good food :-) And next week I’m going to Vienna for a few days. Hopefully there will be some nice exhibitions.

Hmm. I’ve looked it up in every list of abbreviations I know and haven’t found it. Is there a list of abbreviations and their meanings anywhere in the pattern? The author herself is probably the best person to help you with this.
Just a shot in the dark: It could be that “un” stands for “under needle,” meaning something like “B under needle” (similar to “yarn over needle”). Is this a knitting or a crochet pattern? Is it perhaps a brioche pattern, where for some variations you slip stitches and have to bring the working yarn under the needle in front of the work beforehand? As I said, that’s just a shot in the dark.

I just Googled it because I had absolutely no idea what it meant. If (!) I understand correctly, Schwerstrick refers to the material. The image search brings up a few sweaters made from it, and some online shops offer this kind of item. Probably thicker wool or something like that—thicker yarn, in any case.

Honestly, I don’t care about the quality—whether it’s sheep’s wool, cotton, acrylic, viscose, or anything else. I just really value being able to touch it before I buy it, so I can get a feel for how it feels. So buying online is out of the question for me, unless it’s something I’m already familiar with.

Belated congratulations!

I believe that every trend eventually comes to an end, and the crafting boom has already lasted an astonishingly long time. That said, you can’t lump all types of crafts together—there are, after all, many different ones. From what I’ve observed, it originally started as a knitting boom, which has now shifted toward crocheting.
I don’t want to be a prophet of doom, and of course I hope I’m wrong, but I think something new will come along soon. People certainly won’t stop wanting to create things with their hands, so there will always be creative techniques. But that doesn’t always have to involve wool.
Among young people, I’ve noticed that many have started painting. I don’t know if this is a general trend or just the bubble I’m in, but it’s caught my attention.
