I’m always looking around to see what people are wearing, and I have to be honest—I’ve never really noticed dragon tail shawls. I think they’re fun to knit or crochet, but hardly anyone actually wears them. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).
What I’m noticing at the moment are short loop scarves, closed at the back and tapering to a point at the front. I’m seeing this for the first time this year, especially among young girls.
Here in Vienna, I’ve noticed this winter that young girls in particular have been wearing large, mostly checked scarves that cover the whole neck, half the face, and even the shoulders. Among the slightly older women, shawls of all kinds were fashionable, but there was little handmade—mostly "tablecloth fabric," and now a bit of silk—and now I’m seeing more silky, thin loop scarves among the young girls. But honestly, I’ve never seen any dragon tail shawls on the street—or if I have, I just haven’t noticed them.
Even at Christmas craft markets, I’ve seen lots of women wearing shawls in all kinds of variations, but to be honest, not a single one with a dragon tail! I also think crocheting or knitting dragon tails is fun, but apparently no one wants to show them off? Maybe there’s another possible use for them that we just don’t know about yet? ;)
I think Sofie is referring to this woven fabric—it actually reminds me a bit of tablecloths. Those scarves and giant shawls were all over markets and various clothing stores last year.
I still like dragon tail scarves. Whether they’re still in style or not doesn’t matter to me.
I have a few of them, and I prefer wearing them to large shawls. Maybe that’s also why you don’t see them as often—because you can wear them under a jacket or coat.
Thanks, Nadeleule—that’s exactly the kind of woven fabric I’m talking about, the one that reminds me of checkered, coarsely woven tablecloths, or maybe even thick curtains. We saw them in all kinds of variations.
