Dear users, dear authors,
why do you do crafts?
What do you get out of it?

Because of my job, I spend a lot of time in front of the computer. It wasn’t always like that—as a graphic designer, I used to draw a lot more and create print layouts by hand. I can still do all that, but computers started making their way into my industry while I was still in college, and just a few years later, a career in advertising without them was unthinkable. I wouldn’t want to be without my computer now, but just pressing keys all the time isn’t satisfying either.
Crafting is a great balance to the virtual world. I can feel the material; I don’t just see it—I sense with my fingers that a project is taking shape. I delight in soft wool, scratchy jute, the rustle of paper, and paint-stained fingers after a painting, batik, or even wallpapering session.
And—in the end, there’s something there. A sweater, an animal, a picture—something tangible. Something to keep for myself or to give as a gift.
That’s why I love all kinds of crafting and handiwork. You create something. In the truest sense of the word.

I work in an office, go to school on the side, have a child who’s now all grown up—and sometimes I’m under a lot of stress. Many years ago, all that stress made me sick (burnout). During my illness, I discovered that crafting is a great way to combat stress, and I can really relax while crocheting or knitting. Plus, it’s a lot of fun to be creative and work on more challenging patterns. I love seeing something come to life. Over the years, I’ve become really hooked on crafting and enjoy continuing to learn new techniques. It’s become a cherished hobby (and maybe soon a cherished side job, too?).

I use my hands as a way to unwind from my daily routine.
At the office, I deal with numbers a lot—I enjoy it, and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do. But it’s very draining.
And the kids at home are often a challenge for my nerves, too.

But when I pick up a crochet hook, knitting needle, or embroidery needle, my brain switches to relaxation mode. It switches off from numbers (except for counting the rows every now and then), and even the kids’ running around and noise fade into the background.

For me, it’s primarily about the act of creating itself. The result is great, of course, but as soon as something is finished, my mind is already on the next project—and the one after that.

I feel the same way as the previous posters.

I work in an office. I prepare financial statements, create spreadsheets, and deal with clients.
When I get home, I help the kids with their studies, do their homework with
them, and occasionally take care of household chores. My husband
does help out a lot with the housework, though. I’m very grateful to him for that.

It just relaxes me to sit on the couch in the evening and crochet.
That’s when I create some really great things that make me very happy.

Best regards, Heike

Crafting has become an important hobby for me.
Since I’ll be back home soon after my internship, I’ll be spending more time crocheting and knitting again.

I’m looking forward to bringing my grandchildren something new.

Have a great day
Gabi

I feel the same way, and I can relate to every post in some way.

I’m feeling more and more drawn away from the computer. My desire to create something with my hands is growing stronger and stronger. I love watching a project take shape… usually all on its own. What I’d sketched out beforehand then takes on a life of its own—it’s really exciting.

Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life—and right into relaxation. For me, that’s what knitting and crocheting are all about. And when useful and pretty things come out of it, it’s even more fun.

Ever since I was in school, I’ve enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and embroidering, and every now and then I even break out the sewing machine. First, it’s fun; second, it results in creations that not everyone has; and third, it’s relaxing. I also like to try new things (like Tunisian crochet!), but I have to be careful not to let it turn into an addiction!

I do crafts partly because I enjoy it, and partly because I can earn money by using my creativity.

I’ve always loved making things with my hands. A long time ago, it was also a way to unwind from my office job back then.

It’s amazing what you can create from a ball of yarn or other materials.

I’m “just” a homemaker and mom.
I think crafting gives me, in a way, the same sense of self-fulfillment that others get from their careers—whenever I’ve successfully made a new piece or one of my patterns is well-received.
I get more joy out of these things than I would if I simply bought something fancy, even if my handmade items aren’t quite perfect. But that imperfection is part of the charm ;)
I usually only crochet or knit in the late afternoon or evening, though, because despite this passion, my household and my family come first.

I’ve always enjoyed anything I can create with my own hands. And I come from a family of craftspeople. My mother always sewed and knitted clothes for me, and she’d use the leftovers to make something for my doll. My father was a carpenter by trade. Back then, of course, it wasn’t about letting my creativity run wild—it was for very practical reasons. And no usable raw materials should go to waste. Worn-out clothes could still be turned into cleaning rags if absolutely nothing else could be done with them. A broken cabinet became a toy box. Upcycling at its best.

Making something useful with my own hands has always filled me with pride and satisfaction. And it earned me lots of praise from my parents. That shaped me. And often, it was all about trying out different techniques—the journey was the destination: I just wanted to be able to do it. Whether it was renovating, connecting a sink, making clothes, or creating a picture for the wall. Whether it was a postcard I drew myself or a marionette that’s fully workable. I still love experimenting today.

I’ve had a physically demanding job in retail for many years. How wonderful it is to put my feet up in my free time, pick up my handwork, stay comfortably planted on my backside, and let something beautiful take shape. Or to sit at the spinning wheel and let the fibers glide through my hands....*sigh*... and that’s exactly what I’m going to go and do again right now.

Nostalgic greetings
Caro
