A Spot in the Sun

Dagmar and Petra, you have such lovely pictures of your little ones.
My spot in the sun today is on the balcony. It was too windy for me in the garden—I could really do without that when I’m doing handicrafts right now.

April Projects: UFO Week from April 23–30, Best of Leftovers, Yarn Diet: Final Sprint for World Domination, all April projects and of course baby and doll designs as well as spring designs

Dagmar, seeing your yarn cakes like this… it really makes me want to get some for myself (starting in May, of course). I already know this could become addictive. ;-) I’m totally into the color gradients, too.

For me, it has to be shades of red combined with yellow. Or just a rainbow of colors.

I wish you all a lovely, sunny day. I’m going to finish knitting my summer sweater today and then show it to you. The garden is calling!

Make a guess: How much wool and other materials do you think you’ll use in total in 2018?

OMG, Ida! That’s unbelievable! 220 skeins of yarn in one year! You’ve been incredibly productive!

Well, if I do a quick estimate, I’d put my yarn consumption (April through December) at 4,000–5,000 grams at most. But I should mention that I mostly use wool/cotton yarn with a yardage of 120–170 meters per 50 g—so it’s pretty thin. Sock yarn is even thinner. Every now and then, it can be as little as 100 m per 50 g. So, on average, I’d estimate about 140–150 m. For example, my new sweater used just under 300 g, and my poncho used only 200 g. And those are fairly large projects with a considerable yardage.

If I convert 4,000 grams to skeins, that comes out to about 32 skeins. Yeah, I can definitely imagine that.

Let’s see how things look at the end of the year. From now on, I’ll keep track of how much each finished piece weighs.

Favorite colors for spring and summer?

I also really like bright colors. My favorite colors are all shades of red, yellow, and orange. I also really like purple. For various things, especially for kids, I also think green and blue in different shades are quite pretty.

What are you working on today?

Well, another day has gone by... and we have a new today... ;-)

Ida and Dagmar, I totally understand why you love the yarn that cost you world domination. I’m slowly starting to feel the urge to keep an eye out for yarn, too. But I’ll hold out for a few more weeks, and... it’s still fun to rummage through my own yarn stash to see what I could make next. The “diet” yarn is definitely enough for my summer projects.

Today I’m going to finish knitting my summer sweater. It turned out really great with the pattern mix. I’ll show it in the April “diet” thread.

My next “diet” project will be a pair of summer baby pants. I’m still tinkering with the design.

I wish you all a lovely, sunny spring day!

Warm regards
Monika

Advanced Designs: Find a New Challenge Now

This colorful knitted cardigan with a hood and pockets for toddlers (sizes 92 - 104) is a lovely challenge for advanced knitters. Basically, it is easy to knit, including the pattern. Only at the raglan shaping are there a few things to keep in mind. It is definitely fun. For me, this cardigan is one of my highlights, because the parents of my grandchild absolutely love it.

The cardigan can be worn year-round; it is especially ideal in spring and fall. For summer, it can also be knitted from cotton if the yardage specified here is observed.

The knitting pattern describes all steps very precisely, partly with photos.

This pretty poncho is quick to knit and light as a feather. It only requires 200 g of sock yarn, is super comfortable, and can be easily pulled over your head or draped around your shoulders. Absolutely ideal for cool summer evenings or over a sweater during the cooler months.

Also easy for beginners with some knitting experience to follow. The following skills are required:

  • Knit and purl stitches
  • Picking up and binding off stitches
  • Knitting buttonholes or yarn overs
  • Increasing from a single stitch

The poncho cape can be knitted in any size. It essentially comes in a universal size and, according to the pattern, fits up to size 44.

What makes it special: The pattern is written without abbreviations and is printer-friendly. The photos are on separate pages.

This cute children's sweater with a collar fits toddlers from size 92 to 104. At first, it is worn as a long sweater. The collar gives the sweater a comfortable width..The special knitting technique for the collar is explained in the pattern. Thanks to the slight V-neck at the front and the thin cotton, the sweater is also great for cool summer days. In winter, a bodysuit, a loop scarf, or a neckerchief can be worn underneath.

The sweater has few seams. It only needs to be sewn together at the top of the shoulder and for a small section under the arm. It is knitted from the bottom up.

The pattern for the children's sweater is suitable for advanced beginners with knitting experience.

The pattern is written without abbreviations and is printer-friendly. The pictures are placed on separate pages.

April Projects: UFO Week from April 23–30, Best of Leftovers, Yarn Diet: Final Sprint for World Domination, all April projects and of course baby and doll designs as well as spring designs

Oh, Ida, don’t worry about it. The main thing here is having fun. And if you’re happy with the new yarn, then that’s totally fine, too. :-)

Arni, the patterns on the sweater are really easy to knit—you just have to know the arrangement. Unfortunately, the photo here is pretty small. In real life, the sweater looks absolutely great. The lace pattern at the top features little hearts.

The trickiest part was figuring out the front panel with the V-neck. You have to pay a little more attention there while knitting. But other than that, it all goes by in a flash and it never gets boring. ;-)

Shawls / Triangular Shawls / Stoles / Scarves / Cowls and Blankets

This triangular shawl with its pretty lace pattern featuring waves is a real eye-catcher. And it’s practical, too, because it can be worn like a poncho when buttoned up in the front.

It’s knitted from thin cotton, making it airy and lightweight. Despite the fine yarn, it keeps your shoulders nice and warm on cool days.

You should already have knitting experience and practice. The pattern includes many detailed photos, and every step is explained. The pattern charts are, of course, included as well.

These cute door hangers are especially popular with children. After all, they serve an extremely important purpose. They show exactly whether someone may come in or not. They are available as a bear or as an owl, either individually or as a set of two.

Both door hangers can be crocheted very easily and quickly, even by beginners with basic knowledge. The patterns are very well explained and supplemented with photos.

Great for beginners (with basic knowledge). The little bear is easy and quick to knit, of course in any color combination you like.

What’s special and easy here:

  • The entire little bear is made only from pieces knitted flat. It is crocheted together with slip stitches.
  • The pattern contains no abbreviations, so it’s easy to understand.

April Projects: UFO Week from April 23–30, Best of Leftovers, Yarn Diet: Final Sprint for World Domination, all April projects and of course baby and doll designs as well as spring designs

Arni, you’re so hardworking and make such lovely things for your Anton. Very pretty, and what a great idea with the car—it crinkles. Little babies love that. :-)

I’ve been busy in the garden these past few days working on my mixed-pattern sweater. On my third try, I finally liked how the upper front section turned out, and it’s finished. Here’s what it looks like now:

Tomorrow I’ll finish knitting the back piece. Then I’ll knit the shoulders together and sew up the seams—and the new summer sweater will be done. I’m really looking forward to it. Of course, I used up some “diet yarn” on this one too; I estimate it’ll be about 5 skeins in total.

I haven’t started the next project yet, so the sweater doesn’t turn into a UFO. ;-)

I’m planning to make a pair of short cotton baby pants. I’ll start working on the design the day after tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to it!

Today I got a good chunk of my new summer sweater done in the garden. I’ll probably finish the rest tomorrow.

I’m glad the weather is so nice and that I can do some crafting in the garden. It’s also fun to get the garden back in shape and plant some new things.

Topic: Buying Yarn

Caro, that sounds really interesting about spinning, especially since you’re so close to the producer. I’ve become friends with Waltraud, whom I met here. Since I don’t get there very often—it’s over 100 km away—I don’t get tempted that often.

But I’m already looking forward to the end of May or June, when we’ll be spending a few days there on vacation. It’s going to be a real wool festival. :-) For now, I want to stick to my “wool diet” until the end of April. That way, there’ll be room for new things again.

You can tell… the longing is growing!

Yes, Caro, I can totally relate to that. If I had a yarn shop nearby and a lot more space in my apartment, I’d probably feel the same way you do. I also enjoy my yarn baskets sitting here all filled up, and every now and then I just have to pick something up because it simply feels so wonderful.

A shelf full of yarn... wow, that’s a dream!

Dyeing and spinning it yourself... wow, you’re really starting with the basics.
