How have you developed as crafters, and what direction would you like to take?

When my son was little (he’s 42 now), I used to knit and crochet everything myself. Then there was a loooong break...

Almost two years ago, I started again, and my enthusiasm is even greater than ever before. Above all, I now enjoy designing my own clothes and other items.

I take Caro’s approach and let life surprise me. Things will work out somehow, but I don’t know yet where it will lead. One thing I do know: I’ll definitely keep going as long as I enjoy it.

Disadvantages of Crafting

The only disadvantages I can think of are:

  • It costs time and money.
  • It takes space for yarn and spreading out creatively, and that space is sometimes limited.
  • It takes understanding from the family when balls of yarn and fuzz are lying around everywhere.
However, the many advantages outweigh that, so I’m happy to accept it. These days I don’t buy ready-made woolen items anymore. I’d rather invest the money in yarn and design the clothes myself. Just like Krea_Tina’s motto: "Why should I buy something ready-made for €20 when I can make it myself for five times the price in hundreds of hours? ;) "

Absolutely brilliant!

Crafting while watching TV: Is that even possible?

I can’t watch TV without knitting or crocheting either. Since I love watching music shows, it works out great. I can even knit by feel when the patterns are simple.

When watching romantic movies, for example, I often glance up now and then, especially when there are beautiful nature shots.

We often sit together in the evenings, with some nice music playing—or sometimes an audiobook—chatting while I knit. On those lovely summer evenings, of course, we prefer to sit outside.

Cherry prints and floral prints are in: Do you like them?

I really like floral prints. However, in the summer, so do wasps, bees, and everything else that flies around. They probably think I’m a flower. That’s why I tend to go easy on them in the summer.

June Projects: including UFO Week from June 25 to July 2, Best of Leftovers, Yarn Emperor/Yarn Diet, and all the other title highlights

Yes, Sandra, Ruth is right. I pull a different-colored thread through every 10th row so I can count them up more easily. I always do that when I’m knitting. Especially when I don’t have stripes or other landmarks. It’s particularly helpful with this lumpy yarn. I made a bit more progress tonight.

Sandra, your road trip sounds really great. We were at Lake Wolfgang last year—we really love it there. For us, it’s only about 200 km to drive.

Have a good night!

Best regards from Monika

June Projects: including UFO Week from June 25 to July 2, Best of Leftovers, Yarn Emperor/Yarn Diet, and all the other title highlights

Wow, you’ve all been so hard at work and finished some great pieces. Marion, I especially love your sweater.

And I also like the vest and soul warmers you made, Michaela.

Arni, don’t worry about it. The main thing is that Anton had fun. Maybe you’ll still make friends with the yarn. For me, it’s currently that unloved bouclé yarn that’s been sitting in the drawer forever, waiting to be turned into something beautiful. And that’s exactly what I’m doing right now. I spent the whole weekend working on three projects, knitting diligently in the garden in the most beautiful weather, and I’ve made great progress. I ran out of one color for the two color projects. I can’t continue until I get more of it. Once I’ve finished both, I’ll show one of them here, though that might not be until July.

But here’s my vest made from that unloved yarn—first before the weekend and then tonight:

I’m knitting on circular needles, working the front and back together with over 200 stitches...

"Wallflower" patterns and neglected yarn/materials: How’s it going?

Yeah, working through the unloved yarn is definitely a good idea. That’s one of the things I’ve set out to do this year, too.

We could just call it “the unloved yarn.” With “Swan” and “Cinderella,” it always feels very pretty to me—not unloved at all.

Otherwise, “Aschenbrödel yarn” is fine, too.

June Projects: including UFO Week from June 25 to July 2, Best of Leftovers, Yarn Emperor/Yarn Diet, and all the other title highlights

I’m currently working on three projects and have changed my mind yet again. Not entirely by choice—since I accidentally knitted with needles half a size thicker than I intended, my top is now turning into a tunic after all. Yeah, that’s how it goes.

And once again… I have a baby dress on my needles… with a “grow-with-me” feature, of course. I tried out a new lace pattern and (re)learned how to knit it, and it looks absolutely lovely. I figured it out from a piece I knitted over 30 years ago and finally got it right. :-) I haven’t found it in any craft magazine or online yet.

Well, and then I’m also continuing to knit my vest. I don’t know yet how far I’ll get in June. It’s possible that all three projects will end up as UFOs in July.

Since I’ve changed my plans and am running out of various colors, I placed another (larger) yarn order yesterday. Of course, I wanted to save on shipping, so I’ve already stocked up on yarn in different colors. I also included winter yarn, so starting in August at the latest, I’ll easily be able to do a yarn diet again for half a year.

With enough supplies on hand, I really enjoy using up as much as possible. Before that, though, I still want to visit Waltraud at Wollkörberl in July—so dieting is out of the question then. But after that...

I’ll post a photo of one of my projects by tomorrow at the latest. Since the other two are for the color challenge, I won’t be able to show them until the end of July.

Plastic handle or wooden handle / bamboo handle?

Wood, bamboo, or plastic—I can work with any of them, but I prefer wood and bamboo.
What I really don’t like anymore is cold metal.

What makes crafting fun?

I feel the same way, and I can relate to every post in some way.

I’m feeling more and more drawn away from the computer. My desire to create something with my hands is growing stronger and stronger. I love watching a project take shape… usually all on its own. What I’d sketched out beforehand then takes on a life of its own—it’s really exciting.

Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life—and right into relaxation. For me, that’s what knitting and crocheting are all about. And when useful and pretty things come out of it, it’s even more fun.

"Wallflower" patterns and neglected yarn/materials: How’s it going?

I’m currently knitting up some neglected yarn into a vest for myself. It was basically just lying around because I never felt like winding it up. And because I only have white and a little pink. It always seemed too dreary to me. Plus, it’s bouclé yarn… and now I’m rediscovering my joy in knitting with this very yarn.

Who would’ve thought? Thanks to Josefa!

By the way, the vest will have vertical colorful stripes, and I’m not using multiple skeins to knit it. ;-)
