Hardworking little helpers: What are you working on?

Today I worked on the baby leggings that I’ll be giving away soon. Here’s what they look like now that they’re finished.

August Projects: Have Fun Crafting and Enjoy a Nice Chat

Marlene, your spiral socks look pretty—I really like the color combination.

Petra, a phone case like that is always a great gift and very practical.

Today I finally finished the baby leggings. Now I just need to weave in the loose ends on the inside, which I’ll do tonight. So now I’ve finished both pairs of leggings for my granddaughters and can take them with me in September.

Here’s what the finished baby leggings look like:

The crocheted sleeping bag is my only UFO right now—thankfully. I’m going to start by making a few gauge swatches with different color combinations. What’s turning out by chance already looks good.

I keep realizing that what I love doing most is making things for kids or my dolls and teddy bears. I also have a thick cardigan in mind for my husband, but that’ll have to wait until it gets cooler. It probably won’t happen before the end of September.

Oh, and a Christmas gift for a dear friend who’ll be visiting us is already buzzing around in my head. It’s going to be a loop scarf. I’ve already picked out the yarn, but I don’t have a real plan yet. I need to figure out what she might like first.

I’m especially proud that I still haven’t bought any yarn. It’s looking really good that I’ll stick to my yarn diet for a whole year—at least.

How are you all doing right now?

Akela, I also wish you a smooth and pleasant move with lots of hard-working helpers. Just imagine how nice it will be once it’s all done. That’s incredibly motivating. Especially at our age—I’m already 65, after all.

I also had a very nice weekend. Now I’m finally finishing up my granddaughter’s leggings and also writing up a few patterns. I’d like to get that done before my vacation in September.

Have a lovely week, everyone!

45+: August Hits // Download fantastic summer patterns now.

A true classic is this tissue box cover - decorated with butterflies and hearts. It’s even at the very top of my gift wish list by now. Everyone wants one, in colors to match their decor.

Even colorful leftover yarn is enough for this. A very simple crochet project that brings lots of joy - both while crocheting and when giving it away as a gift.

This pinafore skirt is special because it fits toddlers from about 1.5 to 5 years old. As they grow, it gradually changes.

Easy to knit, even for beginners with some knitting experience. There are no seams, and the pattern is well explained.

Knitting socks with the mowi heel is addictive! It’s super easy, even for beginners with knitting experience. The pattern describes 4 different size examples for the CraSyTrio in great detail, meaning for 3 needles. And if you’re used to knitting with 4 needles, that’s possible too.

Sandra, you’re an artist and really great at designing. :-) Now you just need to write up some patterns for them. Maybe you’ll change your mind after all.

I’ll probably finish the doll stroller sleeping bag more slowly than I thought. Because right now I want to finish knitting my UFO first—the baby leggings. All that’s left is the rest of the second leg. When they’re done, I’ll show them to you.

And then another project takes priority: a specific color combination I’m still tinkering with... First, I have to choose one idea from among many.

The little socks for Lena are finished. I’ll show you those, too, along with the leggings. As soon as I’m at the right computer.

This tissue box decorated with butterflies and hearts can be crocheted wonderfully from colorful leftover yarn. Very practical, decorative, and eco-conscious. In our house, it has now replaced napkins at least for everyday use.

And this box is also a big hit as a gift. My friend was very happy with it.

You can use up any leftover yarn here. I used red and green. That makes this door-hanger owl look like a traffic light. It clearly shows whether entry is allowed or not. This is an absolute hit, especially with kids.

Make the kids happy and crochet this door hanger for them. It’s very simple and suitable even for beginners with some crochet experience.

Unusual Materials

My goodness, you’re all so creative! Claudia, that sounds really exciting—what else you can conjure up into something beautiful. I’d also be interested in seeing your apartment. :)

I used to love crafting with Fimo and Window Colors, too. Then I somehow ran out of time and lost interest.

When my son was still in preschool, I was part of a parents’ craft group there. That was really interesting, especially around Christmas. I still have the Christmas decorations I made back then. I especially love the little sailboats made from walnut shells as Christmas decorations. The mast was made of matchsticks and the sail was made of felt.

I’m also not very good at throwing things away—you never know when you might need them. Since my husband thinks the same way, quite a bit of stuff piles up in the basement… until it’s time for another big clean-up.

While crocheting the Puky bag, it occurred to me that the bottom could be well padded with scraps of a soft foam mat. It works great! It’s sturdy and can be washed.

Woolly Wednesday: Do You Knit or Crochet Loosely or with Tight Stitches?

I knit on the loose side, which makes it less tiring.
With crocheting, it’s a bit different—that tends to turn out relatively tight.
But nothing has squeaked for me yet.
I always recommend doing a gauge swatch—I speak from experience. It’s quicker than having to unravel later. ;-)

Sale of Finished Items

Hi Gerlinde,

as far as I know, you can offer private sales on eBay or eBay Classifieds. That would include, for example, your crocheted items.

There are several designers here who also allow sales, especially if they’re on a small scale like yours.

Don’t get discouraged—just ask the designers. It’s easy to arrange so that, for example, when you make a sale, you link to the designer’s CP shop or at least tell the buyer who the designer is.

It’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds. And everyone’s happy.

I have another idea if you’re looking for a good use for your crochet projects. How about taking them to children’s homes and giving them away? You could bring a lot of joy that way. It just depends on what you’re crocheting. I’ve met women here who knit socks for the homeless. That’s another option. But it’s just an idea of mine that I’m passing along to you.

Best wishes, Monika

August Projects: Have Fun Crafting and Enjoy a Nice Chat

Wow, Claudia, I really like your underwater world, too. I totally understand that such big projects aren’t fun in the long run.

I always need something small to work on in between, too. Right now, it’s little socks.

Yes, Ruth, I’ve already designed quite a few sleeping bags in different sizes. But this one will be completely different. It’ll be my first crocheted one, and it’s meant to fit into a doll’s stroller—essentially a pillow and blanket combined. The doll will just be tucked inside.

Hardworking little helpers: Are you busy with crafts—and in your everyday life, too?

I’m currently working on a few patterns that have been waiting for a while—so-called UFOs.

I’m also making a crocheted sleeping bag for a new doll and some winter leggings for my baby granddaughter. I’ve also got some doll socks on my needles.

How do pattern ideas come about?

I often get ideas from my grandchildren, too. The “door guards,” for example, came about because we no longer lock the bathroom door so that no child can lock themselves in. A door hanger like that is both totally useful and cool.

The food for the play kitchen and the little shopping bag were created because my granddaughter asked for them. The same goes for the bag for the Puky.

When it comes to children’s clothing, I get most of my inspiration from my grandchildren’s mother. She always tells me what they might need, and then I come up with something to match.

I still have plenty of ideas in my head. They just pop into my mind, or they arise because there’s a need for something at the moment.

When it comes to our own clothes, I sometimes get inspired by my neighbor and friend who knits. We often sit together and knit, and then come up with great ideas for what might look good.

But even there, there’s always a need for clothes. Sometimes it’s actually the yarn that speaks to me and tells me what it would like to become. ;-)

August Projects: Have Fun Crafting and Enjoy a Nice Chat

WOW, Ruth, that looks so real! Awesome!! Kids will absolutely love it.

Well, I’m also curious to see what kinds of outfits my Lena will get to wear. Here’s a photo of the first sock for now—the pink one for Lena; the other one is Sternchen’s. The second pink sock will follow as soon as I have time.

And here’s what the beginning of the sleeping bag looks like. The head area is crocheted in double layers and padded so it becomes like a pillow. Now I’m going to keep crocheting down to the feet and then figure out the pattern for the blanket. In any case, I’ll be using two different shades of pink.

Vacation 2019: Who’s going on another trip?

@Susanne
Your crocheted campsite really interests me. It’s sure to look great.
Since we’re campers ourselves, I think the idea is especially wonderful.

Would you perhaps like to join in our monthly threads and show your crocheted items there? It’s incredibly motivating! I’m speaking from personal experience. I’m amazed myself at how much I manage to get done since I started taking part.

Take a look – here is the current thread for August:

Best regards, Monika

August Projects: Have Fun Crafting and Enjoy a Nice Chat

Oh Sandra, your little elves are sooo cute and lively. You just have to love them. :)

Marlene, I really like your little basket. It happens to me often, too—I start something and then it turns into something completely different.

I’ll show you tomorrow what I’m currently working on. Right now I have 3 UFOs—yes, a third one has joined the pile. Lena really needs some socks, and I’ve already finished one. It looks so cute—in pink and light pink. I’ll knit the second one in the next few days, so it won’t stay a UFO for long.

I’ve also made some progress on crocheting her sleeping bag. I can already picture it looking really pretty—in those classic girly colors of bright red and pink. Photos will follow once I can take them in daylight.

Outstandingly Reviewed Designs: Great for Starting the Week

The tissue box decorated with butterflies and hearts isn’t just an eye-catcher wherever it’s placed—it’s also very practical and eco-friendly. Hidden underneath is one of those plain cardboard tissue boxes.

It makes a lovely gift for many occasions, such as a birth, birthday, Christmas, or simply as a nice little present for friends. In my experience, it’s always a huge hit!

It’s very easy to crochet and perfect even for beginners (with basic skills).
It’s also a great project for using up lots of colorful leftover yarn.

The grow-with-me pinafore dress for toddlers is a very popular project. It is easy to knit and extremely practical, because it fits from about ages 1.5 to 5. The enthusiastic feedback shows that beginners will really enjoy it too (basic skills are required).

Outstandingly Reviewed Designs: Great for Starting the Week

This round collar has already delighted many users, because it’s super easy to knit and very practical, too. You only need one skein of cotton yarn, so it’s perfect for small leftovers. And it’s always very well received as a gift.

So it’s best to knit several right away.

Easy for beginners with basic knowledge to knit, the pattern is very simple and has no abbreviations.

August Projects: Have Fun Crafting and Enjoy a Nice Chat

A warm welcome, dear Christa, to our creative group! It’s great that you’re joining in here too!

I also think it’s a fantastic idea to make such wonderful Secret Santa gifts for your coworkers. They must be especially nice. I’m already looking forward to your photos when they’re done. You’ll definitely manage it — there’s still plenty of time.

Yes, Christina, I’ve noticed that too. With the bears and dolls, I’m kind of fulfilling a childhood dream and I love them all.

For the time being, my grandchildren come first too ... let’s say, alongside that. Because I’m definitely tempted, especially since doll clothes are finished so quickly. Lena absolutely has to be dressed nicely, and I already have all sorts of ideas in mind.
