Weekend Plans + Happy First Sunday of Advent

Dear Sandra, I hope Anton gets back to his normal temperature very soon. When the little ones aren’t feeling well, we always feel it too, unfortunately.

Just be there for him—that’s what he needs most right now.

I wish everyone here a wonderful Advent season. We had a very cozy time on the first Sunday of Advent, and I spent some time knitting.

Christmas Treats—Our Secret Recipes

My favorite Christmas recipe, which I’ve refined every year—including just recently.
You can see its origins in the photo below, in my very own personal recipe booklet.
I’ve made it healthier year after year.

Quick Gingerbread Traybake

Ingredients:
  • 350 g whole-grain spelt flour
  • 100 g runny honey
  • 100 g birch sugar
  • 200 g ground hazelnuts (roast the whole nuts in the oven at 180 degrees for 10 minutes beforehand)
  • 4 tsp gingerbread spice
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 packet of cream of tartar baking powder
  • a little vanilla
  • 1/4 liter homemade almond milk
  • 150 g liquid coconut oil
  • 4 eggs (if you want it to be vegan, use an egg substitute)
Mix all ingredients together with a mixer, then spread the mixture onto a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 180 degrees on the convection setting for about 15–20 minutes (depending on your oven).

Then let it cool slightly and coat with chocolate glaze.

If you keep the gingerbread traybake in a cool place, it will last about 2 weeks. But it never lasts that long—we eat it all up before then. ;-)

Here’s a photo of the original recipe:

December Projects: The Crazypatterns Craft Group

Claudia, your embroidered decoration looks really pretty. It’s often the simple things that make a big impact.

Ina, I really love your felt slippers! I’ve added them to my wish list, and someday I’ll make a pair myself. My husband will be the first to get a pair—he loves moccasins. It’s interesting to see what they look like before and after. My only little “problem” is that I don’t have those shoe stretchers. Do you have to have them, or is there another way? Of course, I want mine to turn out just as beautiful as yours. And they absolutely have to have leather soles. Oh, I see... I’ll probably end up making them for the whole family, including the grandkids. :-)

I’ve already made pretty good progress on the baby jacket. The body and one sleeve are finished. So things are moving along. Tomorrow I’ll take a photo and show it to you all.

Great! That’s wonderful, Josefa. You need a vacation too, and the New Year period is a good opportunity for that. :)

We’ll still have fun here anyway, even if there’s no awards ceremony.

Is it possible to become an author without a tax ID number?

Hi Barbara,

to become an author here, it’s important to register a business. To do that, you’ll need to get a tax ID number from the tax office. So it’s not possible without one.

Best regards, Monika

Ruth, your puppet dolls turned out great. You’re so incredibly hardworking and really good at what you create.

I finally made a little progress on the baby jacket today, but just a tiny bit. I still have so many other things to do. Now I’m going to finish the Christmas decorations first so I can show them to you. They’re very simple but still make a big impact. I’m sure I’ll have them finished by the weekend.

And so I have a bigger project on the go—something I can knit every now and then without having to think too much—I’m going to knit myself a sweater for a change. I already have the dark red yarn for it—which I snagged on a swap site, by the way.

Everything is now decorated for Christmas, and the first candles are already lit.

Have fun knitting or crafting, and have a lovely evening!

Best wishes, Monika

The Start of My Dollhouse

Ruth, that’s such a good idea—putting the dollhouse on a shelf. Ah, it really brings back childhood dreams. Too bad I don’t have my dollhouse furniture anymore… It really makes me feel nostalgic.

All your rooms are beautiful.

I have a feeling that Linja will get a dollhouse from her other grandparents this year or next. Then I’ll have something we can play with together. :)

Good knitting needles: which material?

I love circular knitting needles and the CraSy Trio. These days, almost all of my needles are made of wood or bamboo. They just feel better in my hands.

You shouldn’t settle for cheap needles here, because I’ve had the experience of them breaking.

Unfortunately, I’ve had a bad experience with the Knit Pro interchangeable needles. For one thing, the tips keep coming loose, so the yarn gets caught in between. And then, once, a needle actually broke. That hasn’t happened to me with my other wooden needles.

Recommended for experienced knitters. Fits from about 3 months to 18 months.

I have a collection like that too, Ina. Yes, you’re right—some of it really is still current, or has become current again. I’ll probably sort through mine soon as well.

Then I’ll put them on the swap portal, where I’ve already listed lots of things. In return, I swap for whatever I might need at the time, for example yarn, household items, books, music, or even clothes. I’ve already found things there that I couldn’t buy anywhere else.

December Projects: The Crazypatterns Craft Group

My goodness, you’ve all been busy crafting again. Such beautiful things have been created here—simply fantastic!

Andrea, the snowmen are absolutely adorable!

Claudia, yes, it’s dangerous to go strolling around town. You come across yarn way too often that you just have to take home with you. And then on top of that, you get projects assigned by your mother-in-law. ;-)

Marlene, I really like your tablecloth. The hearts look very pretty, especially with those bright colors. And the hat turned out great, too. Little projects like that are always very motivating when you’re working on a massive project at the same time.

Mel, I totally get where you’re coming from. Sometimes I feel the same way—I’d rather snuggle up with my husband and watch a movie. But then I knit during the day instead. After all, a relationship needs to be nurtured. Better times are sure to come for you again.

Ina, my son and daughter-in-law also care a lot about the yarn I use for the kids’ clothes. Thanks to them, I’ve become more attuned to quality and am grateful for it.

Over the next few days, I finally want to finish my last-minute Christmas decorations. I just don’t have the time for it during the day right now because there are so many other things to do.

Sandra, your Christmas calendar with the little elves turned out super cute. Would you like to show it here too? I’m totally thrilled!

Bastelfan, thanks for your muffin recipe. That sounds good, too. I’ll try baking it with vegan quark sometime. And Ina’s rolls, too.

My recipe isn’t as old as yours, but I’ve refined it time and again through countless attempts until it’s now perfect. You can spice it up for Christmas or enjoy it throughout the year with just vanilla. Chocolate spread is a favorite for most people, after all.
