I’m currently in the process of cutting lots of colorful fabric scraps into pennants; they’ll become a neutral, colorful pennant garland for the whole family.

I’d like to share an idea with you that’s perfect for birthdays and any other special celebrations. It’s a pennant garland featuring the letters of a name, with a plain pennant at each end. My granddaughter Juna asked for a garland like this for her 5th birthday because her sister has one, too.

This garland is best sewn from fabric scraps—sturdy fabric works best. They’re triangles that I cut out double-layered along the fabric fold—plus a seam allowance on one side. The top edge will be closed later with bias tape.

My measurements are:

• top side: 16 cm
• 20 cm on each side
• space between the pennants: 8 cm

Then I laid one half face up and pinned a letter made of bias tape (1.5 cm wide) onto it. I secured the tape slightly with a Pritt glue stick. In hindsight, I would have lightly sketched the letter with a pen first. As you can see in the pictures, I folded the corners of the tape to create a curve.

After pinning it in place, I sewed the letters all around with a zigzag stitch. Next, I sewed the pennant closed along the side from the inside, turned it right side out, and ironed it smooth.

Then I pinned the bias tape to the top of the pennants until all the pennants were attached to the bias tape. I left 30 cm of the bias tape loose at the ends. The bias tape is then sewn together as usual; the pennants sit exactly between the bias tape so that they’re closed at the top.

In the future, I’ll cut smaller fabric scraps into triangles with a zigzag edge. I’ll then attach these to a piece of bias tape—and voilà, a garland that can be used for any celebration.

Thanks, Ina! Yeah, I hadn’t even thought about the corners. We’ll pad them a bit beforehand to soften them up. In any case, this is just brilliant for outdoors.

I could also see this working for our oval dining table. But first, it’s the garden table’s turn.

that’s a wonderful idea that I’ll definitely try. I’m sure it would also work for rectangular tables—like ours in the garden, for example. We always have to clip the tablecloth down when it’s windy. That wouldn’t be necessary anymore, of course.

Dear Ina, I’m totally in love with your shirts, especially the first and last ones—but the second one, too. Thanks for the great tips and for sharing. I’ll definitely incorporate the “neck seam tape” into my projects too. What’s the name of that material? Is it similar to hem tape?

I’m currently working on my second skirt and will share both of them on the forum once they’re done. Two dresses are also in the works for my two granddaughters. Oh, it’s just so nice to be sewing again. I didn’t even realize until now what I’d been missing. Thanks to you, I’ve rediscovered it. I have to say, though, that I’ve spent quite a bit more on fabric and supplies in the last month than I did on yarn all year. Oh oh… but it will all be used up and it’s fun. I’m especially happy that the results are visible so quickly.

Now I’ve knitted with swap yarn again, this time into a fluffy soul warmer that I’ve already given away. I love the pattern (it’s a pattern from here). The soul warmer was a big hit with the recipient.

I’d had the yarn for several months—I think even a year—but I only just got around to knitting it.

Dear Inge, that’s a great idea. It’s a wonderful project for using up leftover yarn. I’ll have to check right away to see if I have any yarn lying around that I don’t need for anything else.

This short poncho is very easy to knit using sock yarn. It can also be worn like a shawl if you leave it unbuttoned. I find this poncho very comfortable because it keeps my shoulders and upper body nice and warm while still allowing freedom of movement in the arms. Plus, it’s quick to put on and take off and is easy to take with you anywhere.

I feel exactly the same way as the two previous commenters. When I wear acrylic clothes, I feel like I’m in a sauna in the summer and I freeze in them in the winter. In the summer, I feel most comfortable in cotton or viscose; in the winter, in woolen clothes with cotton underneath.

Dear Ina, thank you so much for your contribution to my sewing adventure. I got the bee fabric from our swap group; it’s been sitting around for a while, patiently waiting to become a little skirt. Unfortunately, it was only a very small piece—I would have loved to sew more with it.

Yes, stretchy fabrics are really much more comfortable than stiff ones, especially for kids. It’s easier just to get them dressed. Well, and for moms, too, since they usually don’t need to be ironed. I’m going to sew myself a skirt like this now—it’s very nice and comfortable in the summer.

Tomorrow I’ll upload the hat and the skirt to the gallery and link them to the designer’s page, in case anyone’s interested in sewing them themselves. These two patterns made it much easier for me to get back into sewing.

Ina (Schnuckelina) has inspired me so much with her beautiful clothes for her grandchildren that I’ve now caught the sewing bug too. I’ve got various fabrics on hand, my sewing machine is ready, and I could get started.

Over 40 years ago, when my son was still little, I used to sew a lot—with a very simple old sewing machine. So it’s not completely new to me.

But what is completely new—and takes some getting used to—is sewing with stretchy fabrics, such as jersey. So my first pieces are very simple and a real sewing adventure. Luckily, I found some really great and very easy patterns here at CP that made getting started much easier. By now, I can even say that I have two favorite authors and have stocked up well on patterns from them. Because I still have quite a bit planned. My two granddaughters want dresses for the summer.

My first sewing adventure: a children’s skirt with a waistband

This skirt is really very easy to sew. The pattern is very simple and well written. However, there was one small hurdle for me, and I found a good solution for it. And that’s what I’d like to show you today.

The challenge was sewing the waistband evenly to the top of the skirt, which is cut much wider. It’s actually not that easy to pin these two pieces together in the first place. So I came up with the idea of pulling the skirt, waistband and all, over something so that the fabric would be taut. Only then could I distribute the pins evenly. My laptop came in very handy. I simply pulled the skirt over it, since the width was just right.

Beforehand, I put a pin into each side of the waistband to mark the sides. On the skirt, these were the side seams. The whole thing looked like this:



After pinning it in place, I pulled the skirt with the waistband back down and could start sewing.




And this is what the finished skirt looks like:



After that, I made two hats. For those, I simply used a can to help and pulled the hats over it. Worked great!




And here are the finished hats—together with the matching hats for the dolls:





Maybe my tip has made it a little easier for you to get started, and perhaps you’ll feel like sewing too.
