I made these knitted double-face coasters named Bika both as a Secret Santa gift, because something handmade had been requested, and for myself, so I could set my teapot and teacup on them.

You can find out how these coasters are knitted in this blog post:

*click*

The cable scarf Nami was also a Secret Santa gift from me.
The recipient wanted it in black.
I made her scarf button-up and sewed on red buttons.
I knitted the second version of the scarf for my daughter. Though we share the scarf.

Title/Project name: Egg cozy
For whom & why: for my nephew’s wedding
Technique/materials: crochet / cotton yarn / 2.5 mm crochet hook
My motivation tip: I always think it’s nicer not to simply give a cash gift in a card. Something homemade always makes a gift much more personal

Title/Project Name: Patchwork Cardigan
For whom & why: for my daughter. She saw this finished cardigan online and thought it was beautiful. I then secretly knitted it for her and gave it to her as an Easter gift.
Technique/Material: knitted from acrylic yarn
Optional – CP pattern used (link): no pattern; worked solely from a picture in the colors of my choice.
My Motivation Tip: Bringing joy to others is the best motivation 🥰

Photos:

Tip (Motivation): A mini-ritual helps! For example, put your phone away, find a quiet spot, and think about how much joy you’ll bring the recipient.
Why is this gift important: The gift is important because my daughter was sooo happy to receive it, and now a part of me is always with her. The jacket has already come along on two vacations and is worn very often and with great pleasure. I also feel a little proud when she tells me that her friends have asked where that great jacket is from, and she replies, “My mom made it for me.”

Pirate hat for Halloween

In most cases, the people I give gifts to are family members. Often, wishes are expressed.

Grandson: Graaandma, look, can you do that?
Daughter: Mom, isn’t that great? That would be something for when you’re finished with....
Son: Mother, I have an idea for you.....
Son-in-law: Dearest mother-in-law.......

When sentences start like that, I know there is a wish to fulfill.

For whom - this time for my grandson

Technique/material: Felt fabric and a piece of old white bed linen. Information from my grandson about how he wanted it, and my sewing machine.

My motivation tip: Trying something new. Until now, I had never sewn a hat, and felt fabric was also a new experience for me.

Photos:

And then the spooky pirate was finished. The shirt and jacket were his uncle’s outfit for First Communion (I always keep everything), and Grandpaa contributed the bird on his shoulder.

Tip (motivation): A store-bought hat would have ended up in the trash long ago by now. This way, my grandson helped design it, had to come for fittings often, and took part himself. I think whenever he sees pictures from that time and thinks back to Halloween, the memories will come back, and I hope that smile of joy will return then.

Title/Project Name:
Concrete Wedding Cake Filled with Cash

For whom & why (1–2 sentences):
My son and daughter-in-law were invited to the wedding of some very good friends. Since they wanted to give them money as a gift, they wanted it to be presented in an original way. When they asked if I could bake a concrete cake, my son brought me 3 cheap cake pans and a small bag of quick-setting cement. He also brought a few yellow surprise eggs and some bills for the filling. He left the rest up to me. Take a look at the pictures to see what I came up with.

Technique/Materials:
Quick-setting cement, 3 round cake pans in different sizes, white acrylic paint, hot glue gun, decorative items, empty surprise eggs, and a few bills

  • First, I poured the quick-setting cement into the three cake pans.
  • I pressed the Kinder Surprise eggs—each filled with a bill—into the still-wet mixture.
  • I then painted the three solid cake layers white and stacked them on top of each other.
  • Now came the best part: decorating everything with lace ribbons and artificial flowers. Of course, a few little hearts were a must, too. I wrapped the concrete cake in clear plastic wrap and tied a wedding bow around it.

The gift was very well received and admired by everyone. Some people thought the cake was real. It came with a small hammer and a chisel. So if you wanted to get to the money, you’d have to chip the surprise eggs out of the cake. The (heavy) cake stood in the newlyweds’ apartment for a whole year. Then it was time to move, and the cake was dismantled.

Optional – CP patterns used (link):
Freestyle

My motivational tip:
When your children or grandchildren come to you with creative requests, always try to fulfill them.

Photos: in progress and fully wrapped

Why is this gift important?
Special gifts for special occasions bring joy to both the giver and the recipient and are remembered for years to come.

Title/Project Name:
Chihuahua Potholders

For whom & why:
For my mom’s 80th birthday. The Chihuahua lady “Mia,” who served as the model for the potholders, is her whole world.

Technique/Materials:
Using a photo of my mom’s Chihuahua, I created the template for a knitting chart. Knitted in double-face technique with cotton, 125 m / 50 g.

CP pattern used (link):
https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/items/75186/strickanleitung-topflappen-chihuahua-love-in-doubleface

My motivation tip:
I wanted it to be a special gift for this special birthday—something you can’t buy with money. That helped me stick with the hours of tedious work involved in tracing the dog’s face from the photo and creating a knitting chart. The knitting itself was then a lot of fun :-)

Photos:

Tip (Motivation):
When I make something especially for someone else, I always imagine the joy of the recipient. That really motivates me to stick with it, even during the tedious parts of the work.

Crocheted Pumpkin

For whom & why:
For my grandson again. In 2021, I spent a lot of time in the fall crocheting many pumpkins in different colors and shapes. Then my grandson said, “But a pumpkin is supposed to be orange and have a face. Grandma, that doesn’t work.” Until now, he’s always carved Halloween pumpkins with his grandpa.

Technique/Materials: Crochet, yarn scraps, stuffing

Pattern used: A sketch by my grandson

My motivation tip: Can I fulfill my grandson’s wish?

Photos:

First I crocheted, then embroidered according to the design

Tip · Why is this gift important?

Ever since then, this pumpkin has always adorned the windowsill every fall. I’m happy that my handiwork is appreciated. This motivates me to fulfill his wishes.

Title/Project name:
Balloon to go - toy for your handbag

For whom & why:
Anyone who has children or grandchildren knows that you should always have a little game in your handbag to make their faces light up. That way, boredom doesn’t stand a chance. I made these fabric balloon covers for my grandchildren.

Technique/Materials:
The fabric scraps are sewn into a balloon cover using a template. You put a balloon into the opening and blow it up. And just like that, you have a great, lightweight ball that’s perfect for playing with.

Optional – CP pattern used (link):
My blog post with a detailed description and sewing pattern:
https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/blog/3840/spielball-to-go-oder-luftballonhuelle-gratis-naehanleitung

My motivational tip (optional, a few sentences):
If you can sew, you’re sure to have a few colorful fabric scraps. The balloon covers are quick to sew and provide lots of fun. They also make great gifts.

Photos:

Tip / Why is this gift important?
The balloon covers made from fabric scraps won’t break, and the balloons can be replaced - making this a sustainable and unique toy. Maybe you even have some old kids’ clothes and can use those fabrics for it.

Project name:
Wedding anniversary
For whom/why:
special wedding anniversary of a dance friend
Technique/material:
cotton for the anniversary couple, banknotes and small fabric roses for the cake
Pattern:
Grandma and Grandpa
Motivation:
Giving banknotes as a gift is boring.
Photos:
By chance, I then also found a matching small cake cover, so the cake was easier to transport.

The cake was such a hit that it was also made as a gift for the birthday of another dance friend’s daughter.

Title /Project Name :
music on, world off For whom & why:
For my best friend, who visited me in the hospital. She then took time off work to accompany me home; I was only allowed to lie down or stand for almost 5 weeks. Technique /Materials :
Yarn, wire, Embelish Knit *one of those things you can use to twist things*. I threaded the wire through and then shaped it. I wrote the text with a burning tool and glued on little stones
for some sparkle I love giving away things I’ve designed and made myself. The value is completely different that way.

Title/Project Name:
Recipe Book for Raspberry Lovers

For whom & why (1–2 sentences):
I have a very tasty raspberry plant in my garden that bears fruit twice a year. You can propagate it using cuttings. I gave one of these raspberry cuttings to my friend as a gift. So she wouldn’t just get the cutting, I made her a recipe book (display stand) with raspberry recipes, blank recipe cards, and matching little tags for her future raspberry jam.

Technique/Materials:
I designed the recipes, blank sheets, and tags included in the recipe stand on the computer and printed them out. I placed everything inside a foldable stand made of cardboard and covered with foil. All the sheets were punched and threaded onto spirals. When you want to make a recipe, you can set the stand up and see the recipe right away. The recipe cards can be folded down. When folded up, you can place the stand on a shelf like a book.

Optional – CP pattern used (link):
My own creation

My motivational tip:
I love beautiful things—and I also like to give them as gifts so that the recipient can enjoy them.

Photos:

Why is this gift important?
Homemade gifts, into which you’ve poured a lot of love and care, always bring joy to the recipient. It simply shows our love and appreciation for the person receiving the gift. And I like it—luckily, so does my friend—a little romantic and nostalgic, and I was able to bring my ideas to life in this craft project.

Title/Project Name: Bouquet of Colors

For whom & why: I made this bouquet for a lady who supported me during my current life situation and gave me new courage and strength. A little over two weeks ago, she entered her well-deserved retirement and is now enjoying her time in her allotment garden, where my bouquet adorns her garden shed.

Technique/Materials: I used a size 2.5 crochet hook and mercerized cotton yarn. I also used wooden shish kebab skewers for the stems and decorative sand in the vase for stability. Fine wire is woven into the leaves to help them hold their shape.

Patterns: The patterns are from the designer Hookok; she has her own website with various patterns.

My motivation tip: To keep myself motivated, I set aside specific time for the crochet project, put on an audiobook or a TV series, and simply crochet whatever brings me joy at the moment. The individual flowers in this bouquet were made in different places. The lavender and tulips were made at a craft meetup, while the calla lily and the leaves were made while I was listening to an audiobook. In general, I like to take my crochet supplies with me and crochet wherever I get the chance ^^.

Title/Project Name: A Lasting Memory for the Bride and Groom

My daughter got married in America in 2013.

Back home, we had a celebration for family and friends. As a gift for this celebration, I planned a surprise: a tablecloth with all the guests’ signatures.

Technique/Materials: Felt-tip markers for the signatures on a large white bedsheet. Lots of colorful sewing threads and my sewing machine

I don’t even remember where the idea for this gift came from. I spent many hours working on this sewing project. Beautiful memories came back to me while I was sewing, and I often had to smile. Every now and then, I’d pick up the phone when I noticed while sewing a name that we hadn’t been in touch for quite a while.

Some names were easy to sew, while others were a bit trickier

Photos:

It was laid out for the first time at our grandson’s baptism.

Tip (Motivation): Why is this gift important? Everyone who celebrated the occasion with my daughter and her husband is on the cloth. This way, we’ll always remember them, even if they themselves can no longer be with us.

So the cloth is cherished and brought out on special occasions, and the memories come back. Or our grandson asks, “Who was that?” Then there’s always someone who can tell a story.

Title/Project Name: Buttoned doll scarf/baby scarf; collar scarf
For whom and why : For my reborn doll. After a 40-year break from knitting, I actually intended to make a doll blanket. Frustrated, I gave up on that and decided to start over with a scarf.
Technique/Materials: Cotton-blend yarn in blue and white, approx. 25g each; 1 wooden button, 15mm; size 3 knitting needles.
Pattern: I came up with my own pattern.
Extended checkerboard pattern: Cast on 30 stitches in blue, then work 7 rows in garter stitch; switch to white and, excluding the edge stitches (slip the last stitch and knit the edge stitch after turning), work 4 knit/4 p. alternately; after 6 rows, switch to blue, continue the last white row (knit over knit, purl over purl), then work 7 rows in garter stitch. Once long enough, work 1 buttonhole (horizontal). The pattern is stretchy both horizontally and vertically, making it perfect for anything that grows, from a baby to a beer belly. Scarf width: approx. 8.5 cm.

The doll blanket I started: 7 balls of yarn for 6 color changes per row, and stitches that kept falling off, but no crochet hook... But I’m still going to finish it.

The finished scarf:

Here’s what it looks like when draped:

Title/Project name: ♥ Little Heart ♥
For whom & why: My cousin was celebrating a milestone birthday and only wanted us to come “without anything,” just as we were. But she loves handmade things, and that’s how I found the pattern for this little heart here.
Technique/Material: Crocheted with leftover cotton yarn in white and red.
CP pattern used (link): https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/items/77684/haekelanleitung-herzenssache
My motivation tip: A small, sweet gift that is really quick to make and fun, too!

Title/Project Name: Baby/Doll Toy: Turtle Rattle, 11 cm total length
For whom and why: my reborn doll. Like any baby, she needs a toy that stimulates sight, touch, hearing, and motor skills. ;) For real babies, make sure to use a waterproof, washable “rattle container”!
Technique/Materials: For the baby: cotton yarn (washable at 60°C) in various colors, a waterproof rattle, e.g. made from a small bottle cap, a thin, smooth piece of plastic, gel superglue, tape/adhesive tape, and short-grain rice.
For the doll: colorful leftover yarn, rattle, e.g. made from a small bottle cap, thin cardboard, short-grain rice, and tape/adhesive tape.
For both: size 3 crochet hook, embroidery needle, stuffing, scalpel (for working on the bottle cap)
Pattern: Inspired by the two free patterns for small turtles on CP, crocheted freehand with “Drops You 7” cotton yarn using single crochet. Differences from both patterns: flatter shell and belly, eyes and mouth embroidered, small “rattle container” inside the belly, head slipped between the shell and belly, legs and tail crocheted directly onto the belly with double thread and worked outward, chain stitch sewn on in a heart shape, and initials embroidered inside the heart. Do not stuff too tightly!

Picture 1: body, rattle container, and head
Picture 2: underside
Picture 3+4: rattle + cuddly toy
Picture 5: side view

Title/Project Name: Amigurumi Sheep and Unicorn
For whom, why: My 5-year-old granddaughter wanted a “red” sheep and a unicorn because she had cuddled the rabbit I crocheted for her 3 years ago to pieces.
Technique/Materials: I crocheted the sheep using Gründl Premium yarn and the unicorn from leftover Catania yarn; loosely based on free patterns from Hobbii.

The sheep is 45 cm tall when seated.

And here’s the unicorn, which is about half the size.

Motivation: All my crochet projects are close to my heart. When I get to fulfill a special wish, like this one for my granddaughter, the hook practically glides through the stitches on its own. I’m curious to see if these two will meet my granddaughter’s expectations. Kids can be sooo honest.

I wish everyone a relaxing weekend.

Title/Project Name:

Small Heart Keychains – Crocheted with Love

For whom & why (1–2 sentences):

I crocheted the very first heart keychain for my best friend. She had just started a new job because the shift work in her old job was too stressful for her family—the heart was meant to accompany her on this new path and give her strength. 💝
Technique/Materials:

Crocheted from leftover cotton yarn, attached with a key ring. This creates sustainable gifts that are both practical and very personal.

My motivational tip:

When crocheting these hearts, I make a point of taking a quiet moment—phone away, take a deep breath, and think of the person who will receive the heart. That way, each piece is filled not only with yarn but also with a lot of love.

Title/project name:
Embroidered bedspread

For whom & why:
For the birth of my niece 37 years ago, I wanted to give her a special welcome gift that she could enjoy for a long time and that would be one of a kind.

Technique/material:
It was 1988. I had a large piece of Aida fabric. In East Germany, you could buy it by the bolt. Since I didn’t have a pattern to embroider it from, I simply came up with colorful designs myself and embroidered the piece of Aida fabric in cross-stitch. I used all kinds of leftover yarn. Then I lined the back with fabric (an old curtain) so you couldn’t see the unattractive wrong side. I gave the blanket to my niece for her birth. As a baby, of course, she couldn’t appreciate it yet. But later it was always spread over her bed.

She took the blanket with her when she moved out. A good sign. That’s why there is only this one old photo from back then.

My own creation

My motivation tip (optional, a few sentences):
For special people and/or special occasions, the gifts have to be special ... the kind you can’t buy, but can only DIY with lots of love and perseverance.

Tip (motivation):
Such large gifts really do require a lot of determination, plenty of perseverance, and time. So if you plan something like this, you have to start early enough. But a gift like that is truly unique. And you enjoy every little piece you finish. So yes, I had fun making it too!

Title/Project name:
"Minecraft Blanket“
For whom & why:
For my son’s 8th birthday, the biggest Minecraft fan of all time!!!
Technique/Material:
The blanket was crocheted with polyacrylic yarn.
I simply created pixel images of the individual motifs and crocheted them using the corner to corner technique.
Pattern:
No pattern, my own idea and execution.
My Motivation tip:
The biggest motivation for this project was seeing my son’s overjoyed eyes on his birthday.
Now he is a few years older, but he still has his blanket. :)

Title/Project name:  Winter set for doll/baby with heart appliqué
For whom and why: for my reborn/therapy doll. Because the doll made me feel like knitting and crocheting again.
Technique/Material: virgin wool blend (correction for the scarf above: the same) in blue, white, and green. 3.5 knitting needles, 2.5 crochet hook, 2 cardboard rings for pom-pom/bobble
Pattern: Hat for approx. 38–44 cm circumference: 108 sts with size 3.5 needles; inspired by https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/items/103127/fruehchenmuetze-strickanleitung
Pom-pom/bobble: classic method with two cardboard rings
Mitten: generously knitted around the doll’s hand (that’s why the right one is smaller and knitted on the left. ;)
Little heart: https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/items/4822/loveley-freebook-herz-streudeko-applikation
The scarf above was complemented with a heart bobble on a ch chain (sew on 1 heart, sew the 2nd heart opposite it, back to back).
Motivation tip: When you’re working on something bigger/more complicated, slip in something small and easy now and then. That gives you new momentum. This contest was also a motivational help for me.
