We usually have potato salad with sausages. Since we traditionally celebrate with my parents, and this year my father is seriously ill and hardly eats anything anyway, we’re skipping that. On Christmas Day, my husband and I will have duck with homemade bread dumplings.
@Wollness-Oase
I wish you and your family as wonderful a Christmas as possible despite all the difficulties.
As for food
I was actually going to have Swedish Christmas ham for Christmas, just for a change.
With a bread crust

but I’m kind of skeptical about whether the bread crust will actually stick to the ham.
I thought you can’t go wrong with fish fillets and potatoes on the side, that always works.
Maybe I’ll do the Christmas ham next year instead.
Yesterday, for the first time in ages, I had stollen again, with marzipan and a mile-thick layer of powdered sugar. Since I switched to organic food and at the same time cut back on sugar in my diet, or even cut it out completely, by cooking more myself and eating more fruit and vegetables, it was quite an “experience.” When you’re no longer used to sugar and then suddenly want to eat what was admittedly a thick slice of stollen, you end up lying awake half the night with a stomachache. No more stollen.
Oh well. I wouldn’t have thought I’d ever get to the point where something would be too sweet for me; it used to be that nothing was ever sweet enough. But I guess you get older and all that :)
@Muetzekatze
Thank you very much. We’re trying to make the best of it. The main thing is that we’re together. ☺
Wishing you a lovely and peaceful Christmas as well.
At our house, we traditionally have meat fondue with homemade broth instead of fat in the pot, amazing homemade sauces, small corn on the cob, mushrooms, pearl onions, delicious bread... oh, I’m already looking forward to it!
Wishing you all a blessed Christmas with your loved ones!
We’re having two different dishes. Beef roulades, chicken drumsticks, dumplings, and various vegetables. Not everyone in our family eats everything. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season, too.
At our house, we always had potato salad with sausages so Mom wouldn’t have so much to do.
But after my “little” brother passed away at age 48 on the second Sunday of Advent the year before last, and then my mom (who probably couldn’t cope with the death of her youngest child) passed away shortly after, we’re still working our way back to celebrating Christmas. But we’re trying our best, and that starts with the food. We’ll be having goose legs with dumplings and red cabbage. Very traditional. And yet completely different!
Merry Christmas, have a wonderful holiday, and above all, stay healthy!
Petra
Dear Petra, dear Michaela, I’m so sorry for what you’re both going through.
@Wollness-Oase
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your dad gets better soon, and as you already wrote, the main thing is that you’re together. Enjoy Christmas together.
@ursulapetra
What happened to you is absolutely terrible. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and your family that you’ll be able to enjoy Christmas a little bit despite everything.
And now for the food: Since my daughter is a vegetarian, I always find it a little difficult to juggle everything. But this year we’re having smoked pork loin and roast pork with red cabbage, dumplings, and pasta. Luckily, my daughter eats the sauce (after it’s been thoroughly strained), and instead of meat, she gets a nice vegetarian dish :)
I wish you all a wonderful Christmas, and as Petra already wrote, stay healthy.
Love, Carola
On Christmas Eve in Westphalia, we either have potato salad with sausages or lentil soup.
On Christmas Day, we have the festive meal (this year: venison goulash, red cabbage, and dumplings), and
on Boxing Day, we accept invitations to others’ homes and enjoy whatever’s served ;-)
I wish everyone a healthy and peaceful Christmas ♥
We’re already being cooked for on Christmas Eve. Beef roulades from my father-in-law. There’s an unbelievable amount of fat in the sauce, but it’s sooooo delicious. And with the right little shot of schnapps after dinner, my stomach doesn’t suffer so much either
Our absolute favorite meal, which we only have at Easter and Christmas:
savory steamed dumplings + chicken + a kind of cream sauce—all made according to a recipe from our great-great-great-grandfather... so it’s really been in the family for ages, and traditionally, for decades, we’ve only had this on special occasions
I’m a little late because I was on vacation—but I still wish you all a wonderful and peaceful holiday season! Take some time to recover from all the stress and focus on what really matters.
As for the food: we always had bone marrow dumpling soup, ham in a morel cream sauce, and dessert. But since we only got back from vacation yesterday, my son invited us over. We had beef carpaccio, venison goulash, spaetzle, dumplings, red cabbage, a pear with cranberries, and a cheese platter for dessert. It was absolutely delicious!
Best regards,
Luise
