The scarf is crooked :(

Hi everyone,

I'm really at a loss here. No matter how many times I crochet this scarf, it always leans to one side. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

The picture is very small and dark, but my suggestion would be: you need to insert the crochet hook into the stitches rather than between them and, of course, not forget the last stitch of the row.

Here’s a closer look...

Hi Elena1382,

it would of course be a good idea to ask the author of the pattern first? Or did you not have a pattern for this?

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but at least the different stitch counts in the rows stand out—that’s where I’d start (the first light-colored row of double crochets has 24 stitches; I count 25 stitches in the blue row above it). Do you always count your stitches carefully?
The correct number of turning chain stitches is also important to prevent a crochet project from turning out crooked.

As you can see, there are several possible reasons why the scarf turned out crooked.

Maybe this link will help you: http://rescuedpawdesigns.com/2014/05/12/learn-how-to-change-colors-in-crochet/

Best regards, Marion

The rows should always have 24 stitches (I haven’t counted 25 now, but maybe I’m already doing something wrong there)

I have a pattern.
Alternating half and full double crochets. Before the full double crochets, 3 turning chains, and before the half double crochets, two.
The pattern is supposed to be correct, and no one can help me with it either. The worst thing is that I’ve now attached the next piece with single crochets and it’s straight. That looks even worse now :(

Hi Elena1382,

I think something might be going wrong with the turning chains...

It looks like after crocheting the 3 turning chains, you’re starting the next stitch one stitch too early.
Then you crochet your usual number of stitches and, as a result, stop one stitch too early.

If you do this consistently, it would result in exactly this “slant” that you can see in the picture.

Could you check that?

Best wishes
- Steph :)

I started over again and paid close attention to the turning chains. I think that’s okay. I also haven’t had any problems with any other part, but when I combine half double crochets and double crochets, it always ends up crooked.

I just quickly crocheted a test piece.

It looks pretty good so far.

But: I can easily make it “crooked” by pulling on the diagonally opposite corners.

That makes it look very similar to your photo.

Maybe you can straighten out your work?

Best wishes
Steph :)

Hmm, I can pull it straight right now, but it “drifts” back a little. It does look better, though.
Could the skewing be because I crocheted over the yarn of the unused color and pulled it tight at the end of the row?
That would really be something.
I’ll do it again now and won’t crochet the yarn in :)

In any case, thank you so much for your help and for taking the time :)

Here you go! :)

On my test piece, I didn’t crochet the thread in either. Normally I would do that, though. I was just too lazy. :D
I wouldn’t pull it tight, though. At least not very much. I’d crochet it in “as usual”—not too tight, but not super loose either.

The trick is really simple. The turning chain stitches are only for the height of the crochet piece. If you have a row of single crochets, make a turning chain at the end if you want to continue with single crochets in the next row. You must not work into this turning chain in the next row. If you want to continue with half double crochet in the next row, make two turning chain stitches. In the next row, don’t work into those two turning chain stitches; instead, start working again from stitch 3. Always remember that the turning chain stitches are only for the height of your work. The taller your double crochets are, the more turning chain stitches you’ll need to maintain the correct height. But never work into the turning chain stitches; then your work will be straight.
