Yarn colors that flatter your skin tone

Hi again,
I just started a thread over in the other forum asking for wool recommendations for a very long scarf that’s supposed to be warm and soft to the touch.
https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/forum/topic/10559/wolle-fuer-streichelzarten-sehr-langen-schal-fuer-um-den-kopf-und-hals-rum
Now it’s occurred to me that I don’t even know what color I want it to be yet.
I really like blue, but that means I already have a lot of blue things, and as much as I like blue, it gets monotonous over time.
The thing is, I’d really like the color to actually suit me.
I have relatively pale skin, so that’s not always so easy.
How do you guys actually handle this?
I mean, when you order yarn online, it’s pretty hard to tell if the shade will actually look good, because the colors on the screen don’t necessarily match reality. That’s one problem. The other problem has to do with the main color types. You’ve probably read about them in women’s magazines. There are spring types, summer types, fall types, and winter types, and then there are color suggestions for makeup and clothing, etc. How do you handle that? Is that important to you when it comes to clothes, or do you already know by heart which colors suit you and which don’t? I don’t always have a great sense of color combinations, but that’s usually not a problem—if you basically only have blue, white, black, and a few red items in your closet, you don’t have to worry too much about putting outfits together. I only have a few pieces that are a different color. And I don’t wear those very often either. Aside from that green shirt I bought two months ago—which I really like, but it’s too cold to wear it now. So, as you can see, I’m not great with color combinations, but I’d like to try something new. I’m not sure if I’ve made myself clear—or rather, I guess I just know that I have to like the color. Does anyone know which colors look good on me? I’d just like to know which colors work well if you have very pale skin.

hi... well, I know which colors suit me and which don’t. You’re right about the yarn—the photo isn’t always an exact match for the actual yarn color, but if you keep using a certain brand of yarn, you eventually get a feel for it. It gets trickier when you try a new brand.

Especially with blue, there are so many variations, from ice blue to midnight blue.

If you want to make a scarf, how about beige, ice blue, or cream? Then you could work a few rows of dark blue into the scarf or add dark blue appliqués or something like that... I’m sure it’ll look really nice :)

Good topic.
I know which colors absolutely don’t suit me (:-D). I always avoid those.

When it comes to buying yarn, I basically have my two go-to yarn brands that I always buy from. First, Lana Grossa for things you wear, and Schachenmayr for amigurumi, decorations, etc. Oh, and Recotton for baskets, etc.
Since we have a local Lana Grossa retailer, I really enjoy shopping there. I think it’s important to support local retailers too, since they need to make a living—which, for me, has the added benefit of being able to see the products in person. Another advantage is that I can return yarn if I’ve misjudged the amount I need.

As for my favorite color, of course I have colors that I wear more often. But I think that, especially with a scarf or loop, you can also use gradient yarn very well. For example, I really like Olympia by Lana Grossa (http://www.filati.cc/lana-grossa-garne/wolle-garn-c_41-p_1.html). I ordered pretty much everything for a market and crocheted loop scarves in every color. I didn’t even know which ones I liked best overall. There were so many beautiful options. And there are also lots of beautiful yarns that include shades of blue. That way, you can stay true to your color scheme but still have some variety.

The yarn costs 8 euros, but one skein is always enough for me to make one loop. I should mention, though, that I make it wider and only make a single tube out of it. So I don’t wrap it around twice or even more times.

Oh my gosh, now I’ve looked at the new Olympia yarns in my mail… a mistake… no, I’m not going to buy any right now

Basically, I always go by the motto: what I like suits me.
There’s really only one color that I know absolutely doesn’t suit me, and that’s yellow. I totally love yellow as a color, but in yellow clothes I just look sick. *laughs*

If you have a pale complexion, and maybe even blonde hair (like me—pale as chalk, with very light blonde hair), then bold and cooler colors might suit you well. A beautiful berry red or a dark teal, perhaps.

You can try taking various online color tests—just type “color type” into Google, and you’ll find plenty of sites with tests. The results might vary, so just go with the one that comes up most often ;-)

I buy a lot of yarn online and have found so far that the colors in the pictures are very close to reality.

Thanks for your answers :)
I like the idea of appliqués in the scarf. The scarf shouldn’t be too light, so it doesn’t look dingy too quickly. I wash clothes several times a week, but I don’t really like washing woolen items—and I don’t like washing them often either—so I’d prefer a slightly darker color.
Buying locally is always a good idea. You can’t always buy everything online.
Gradient yarn is a nice idea—I’ll have to check it out; maybe I’ll find something. But the colors should stand out clearly enough from one another—I don’t want them to end up looking almost identical.

Berry red—I like that idea. I like the name, too, by the way. I’ve only ever heard that term used for lipstick colors, but I actually like it quite a bit there.
