Hi,
I could use some advice. I saw a woman in a TV movie wearing what I think was a beige scarf—it was a black-and-white movie, so it’s a little hard to be sure about the colors. But in any case, it was relatively light in color.
The scarf was very long—not a loop, but a real scarf—and also relatively wide.
Both ends reached down to at least her stomach, and there was still enough length left to wrap it once around her head and keep her neck warm. Since she was sitting a lot in the movie and only wore it at the beginning, it’s a little hard to say exactly how long it was. But I think it was pretty long. In any case, I want mine to be really long and also relatively wide so I can wrap myself up in it during the winter, because I don’t want to be cold.
I thought I could make it using half double crochet stitches; with full double crochet stitches, the space between the loops is too big for me—too much air would get in—and with single crochet stitches, it probably wouldn’t be flexible enough. But I want it to be cozy and soft and very flexible.
I’d like a yarn that’s very soft to the touch, not itchy—no acrylic stuff; that’s a total no-go.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be cotton, but I’m just not familiar with any other options besides cotton.
I’d appreciate any tips.
Hi Mützekatze,
I’m currently working with Baby Mix by Schoeller + Stahl. Crocheted with a 3.5–4 mm hook, it comes out nice and soft.
I’m actually quite sensitive, but I don’t find this yarn itchy.
It’s a 50% virgin wool, 50% microfiber yarn with a yardage of 135 m per 50 grams.
Best regards,
Petra
I’ve been crocheting scarves lately and was also looking for soft yarn. I’m quite sensitive myself and quickly find many yarns too scratchy. I ultimately decided on Merino Extrafine 120 by Schachenmayr. It’s made of 100% virgin wool and has a length of 120 meters per 50 grams. The recommended hook size is 3–4 mm. I crocheted with a size 4 hook. Everything turned out super soft and cozy. My kids love them too, and they often have an even keener sense of whether wool is scratchy or not. :)
But a scarf and a poncho are two completely different things, dear Ms. Hamster :)
Thank you all for your answers.
I’ve thought it over now—a pretty berry red as the color, paired with a kind of microfiber yarn, which I really like. Then I just need to buy the yarn and decide how wide and long it should be—or rather, figure out the width and length beforehand so I can buy enough yarn—and then I’ll start crocheting. There’s no way this scarf is getting fringes—I don’t like that sort of thing. I might add a few rows in a pretty contrasting color at the very end; I’ll have to see. :) And then I’ll wrap myself up in it :) and it’ll be really beautiful
Yeah, those are two very different things—a scarf and a poncho. But you could just as easily drape a blanket cut in half lengthwise around your neck. That would be very warm, too. Joking aside, it’s going to be great.
