Hi everyone.
I need your help. I'm looking for a pattern for a blanket like this.
Maybe someone has an idea. Thanks
Best regards, Sabrina

Knitting pattern for the mermaid blanket
It looks cute, but is it practical…?
Anyway, here’s how I’d knit it:
First, you’ll need thick yarn—needle size no smaller than 7 mm.
I’d start with the tail fin. To do this, for example (depending on the yarn thickness), cast on 108 stitches (= 27 x 4 stitches). On the right side row, work 4 purl stitches, 4 knit stitches alternately; on the wrong side row, work the stitches as they appear.
After about 40 cm, the fin is finished—now the “body” begins, which I would knit like a bag.
To join the fin to the body: place 4 stitches each onto 3 double-pointed needles. So you start with 4 purl stitches on the first spare needle, 4 knit stitches on the second spare needle, and another 4 purl stitches on the third spare needle. Then place the spare needles one after the other in any order—paying attention to how the “folds fall”—and knit the first 3 stitches together, then the second 3 stitches,…
This creates 4 new stitches from the 12 stitches on the spare needles to start the body. Repeat this 8 more times until all the fin stitches have been worked.
There are now 36 stitches on the needle—the start of the body!
First, double the stitches by knitting all 36 stitches, but do not let the “old stitches” fall off; instead, catch them on a spare needle—this doubles the 36 stitches, bringing the total to 72 stitches.
I would knit these stitches in rounds (first on double-pointed needles, later on a circular needle).
To do this, in the first round, increase one stitch before the first stitch, mark it, knit 36 stitches, increase one stitch again and mark it, then knit another 36 stitches. = 74 stitches
You could start working a knit-purl pattern from here on—for example, alternating 3 rounds knit and 1 round purl—or something “more complicated,” or even just stockinette stitch! It’s entirely up to you! I would go with the first option.
Since the body still needs to get much wider, I would increase 4 sts in every third row (1 st on the right and 1 st on the left of the marked sts).

IMPORTANT: All instructions are just examples! I haven’t tried this myself! This is how you COULD knit it—I can’t guarantee it will work! But if I were to knit this blanket, that’s how I’d start and how I’d go about it!
Have fun and good luck with your project!
Best wishes, Angela

I saw something similar online a while back—just a picture, no pattern.
But it wasn’t a blanket; it was more like a half-sleeping bag—the kind you slip into so you can feel like a real mermaid. Apparently, little girls really love them.

I would have really liked that when I was younger, too. Maybe I’ve just watched too many movies.

When I look at the photo a little more closely, I think it’s a blanket and not a “bag.”

Hi, I’d say it’s a blanket—a rectangular one that’s sewn together at the bottom to form the tail, and it’s like a sleeping bag at the bottom but more like a blanket at the top; the “sleeping bag” part comes up to the knees at most.

Hi myDIYkreativ ...that could very well be the case! But I still think the blanket is narrower at the bottom than at the top—definitely not rectangular....
But whoever wants to try making this can certainly let their own ideas or “preferences” run wild!
It would definitely be nice for the “little mermaids” to be able to slip almost completely into their “costume”! ;-))

Best regards, Angela

Hi everyone,
I wanted to crochet or knit the mermaid blanket. Does anyone have a detailed pattern for me, or maybe a link? I found one on YouTube for crocheting, but unfortunately it’s in English. Thank you so much for your replies.

Hi Angela, I’ve started knitting based on your idea. Would you have time to write down your idea for the top part—so that it doesn’t look like a sack but more like a blanket? I’m not a total beginner, but it’s much easier for me to follow a pattern than to try figuring it out on my own—with varying degrees of success.
