Hats

Hi, everyone!

I have a problem with a hat—it keeps slipping up when I wear it... Does that mean it’s too short, too loose, or too tight?

What’s the best way to knit the bottom of the hat (alternating knit and purl stitches) without it being noticeable?

@kristin-rathsam,
welcome to our community.

@everyone, maybe someone else would like to add something?

Hi,

generally speaking, I’d say the hat is probably too tight and too short.
However, the experienced knitters here surely know better how best to add to the bottom edge; personally, I would “simply” pick up the stitches at the bottom of the hat and continue knitting.
Alternatively, if it’s a hand-knitted hat, I would unravel the last round—the cast-off round—put the stitches back on the needles, and continue knitting from there.

Best regards, Nina

Too short and too tight, I’d say. Is the hat knitted from the bottom up or from the top down? If it’s knitted from the top down, it’s easy to add a bit more—just unravel the bind-off round, pick up the stitches, and continue knitting, as Nina suggests.
If it’s knitted from the bottom up, I think I’d rather add a bit at the top—that is, unravel it up to where the decreases begin and continue from there.
Another option would be to pick up stitches along the bottom edge and hide the join on the inside by folding the brim over. It won’t be completely invisible, though.

Too tight, too short, or even too short and too loose!
If there’s a pom-pom on it, that pulls it back even more.
This happened to me with a hat for my husband (knitted sideways, too short and too loose).
I then crocheted 3 rows onto it; that was the easiest solution. And it actually looked good.
Note: crocheting onto it makes it tighter!
