Mistake in the patent stitch pattern

Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 4:36 PM
Hi, I have the following problem: I apparently missed a yarn over in the patent stitch pattern. I didn’t notice this until the next row, so I just knit instead of knitting the double stitch. Now it looks like there’s a bigger hole at that spot. How can I fix this?

I found a video (Edit Mario: please no external links) where the knitter knit a knit stitch instead of making the yarn over; in the video, she shows how to rip it up to that point and fix the mistake. Does this work the same way in my case, or do I need to do something differently?

I should mention that I’m a complete beginner.

Hi,
please don’t post external links in the forum.
Feel free to take a photo of your problem and post it here—that way, others can see exactly what’s going on and will surely be able to help you with some tips.

Sorry about the link. You can find it on YouTube if you search for “fixing mistakes in brioche stitch.” Here are the pictures:

I don’t think it’s that simple. The woman in the video has all the yarn overs. So do I have to unravel everything back to that point? Is there a trick to it?

Hi,

if there aren’t too many stitches (say, 300 or so—though “a lot” is relative ;-), I’d unravel it. You could just drop that one stitch down to that point and then crochet it back up with a yarn over, but you’ll always be able to see that.
It’s better to unravel it and do it again.

Best regards, Michaela

Hi,
I agree with Michaela: if it’s not too much trouble, it’s better to unravel it.

It does take a little more effort, but I do it the same way, because otherwise I’ll always be annoyed by the mistake since I’ll always see it ;-)

Does that mean I take the needle out and pull the yarn back to that spot? Is it easy to get the stitches back onto the needle afterward? Sure, there aren’t that many rows. But since I’m a beginner, it’ll take me a little while...

It might get a little fiddly. It looks like you were knitting full brioche, i.e. every row is worked with a yarn over. With half brioche, you at least still have stitches without a yarn over in every 2nd row. Then you could unravel back to a row like that. With full brioche, the only way is to make sure you always pick up the yarn overs onto the needle as well. Or you knit "backwards," meaning you undo stitch by stitch and put each one right back onto the needle. But that takes more time. For the future, I’d recommend putting in a “lifeline” from time to time. That works best with knitting needles where you can change the cable. There’s always a small hole in those needles; you thread a thin yarn through it, which you then automatically pull through the stitches as you knit. If you then have to unravel, the stitches only drop as far as that yarn, and picking them up again is much easier.

Wollness-Designs: Thank you, I just learned something new there—the trick with the lifeline was new to me!
For brioche, I prefer to knit back, since picking up stitches with yarn overs isn’t that easy.

Wow, Michaela! Can’t we collect “tips” like this somewhere?

There used to be a thread here somewhere with tips and tricks....

Thank you very much. I just redid it because I couldn’t figure out how to pick the stitches back up. I also added these “lifelines.” That works pretty well with a darning needle, too.
