Adding a "lifeline" in knitting.

A "lifeline" (German: Lebenslinie) can help you if you discover a mistake a few rows down in your knitting and need to unravel (frog) your work again.
The easiest way to add lifelines is with knitting needles that have interchangeable cables. These needles have a small hole at the screw thread. Thread a thin yarn through this little hole before you knit the next row. Then you simply let this yarn run along the cable, automatically pulling it into the row. 
If you then need to frog your work, the stitches will only drop down to this thread. If your pattern is very complicated, you can add a lifeline every 10 rows, for example. Then you simply pull the thread back out when you no longer need it.
If your knitting needle doesn’t have a little hole, you can also thread the lifeline through the stitches with a darning needle.

Stitch markers are very helpful when you need to work with a lot of stitches.

It’s so easy to lose count—and then you have to start all over again.
To prevent that, mark every 10th or 20th stitch with a stitch marker.

You can also use them to mark the beginning or end of a pattern repeat.

When crocheting in spiral rounds, a marker thread helps mark the beginning of a round. You place the thread alternately to the front and, in the next round, to the back. This saves you from having to move the stitch marker.
