Here are three wonderful yarn cake ideas for you:

1) Shawl "Gentle Breeze" - beautiful and versatile for snuggling up and feeling good.
Thanks to the lace pattern, the shawl drapes wonderfully loosely and softly. This makes it very comfortable and wearable in many different ways.

Crocheted with 1 yarn cake (yardage 800 m / 200 g) and hook size 3.00 mm.

2)
"Triangle Shawl in a Square" - my best- and longseller.
It is also crocheted with one yarn cake (yardage 800 m). The shawl drapes beautifully loosely and can be worn in many different ways.

and 3)  The shawl "Cappuccino" is chic, warm, and wonderfully easy to make. The pattern is quick to memorize and can also be worked on in good company, since you don't have to concentrate too hard. A wonderfully soft, cozy shawl for fall and winter.

For all three shawls, there is a detailed description as a PDF file with text, crochet chart, and step-by-step photos.

All three shawls are very easy to crochet and absolutely suitable for beginners!

Here’s a calculation tool for projects you’d like to make when your existing yarn doesn’t match the yarn specified in the pattern, to help you find out whether you have enough yarn:

It’s an Excel spreadsheet for converting the amount of yarn required from the “original yarn” used in a pattern to a desired “alternative yarn.”

Example:
The original yarn listed in your pattern has a yardage of 85 m per 50 g. According to the pattern’s specifications, you need 600 g of this “original yarn” for your size. However, you’d like to make your project using a different yarn (= alternative yarn). The yarn chosen in this example has a length of 70 m per 50 g skein. If you enter these values into the Excel spreadsheet, you’ll immediately see the required amount of the desired yarn in both skeins and grams.

Technical note:
This requires a spreadsheet program such as Excel or LibreOffice (the latter is available for free online), as this spreadsheet is based on formulas. After opening the spreadsheet, please click “Enable Editing,” then fill in the light-colored cells.

Got 6-ply sock yarn as a gift—but don’t want socks???
How about knitting a hat from this kind of yarn:

Knitting pattern for the ALL-SEASON BEANIE hat made from sock yarn

(To purchase/download, please click the image)

For this feather-light all-season beanie, which is made with knitting needles in various sizes (the brim with size 3.5 needles, the main part with size 6.0, the decreases with 4.5 and 4.0) and with a crochet hook size 3.0–4.0 for the decoration, 70 g of 6-ply sock yarn is enough, though 1 skein usually has 150 g. You can still knit a small cowl or even 1 pair of socks up to shoe size 36/37 from the leftover yarn :-)

By the way: there’s a sock-knitting course for 6-ply sock yarn here:
https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/items/22205/strickanleitung-socken-aus-6-faedigem-garn-lehrgang-mit-tabellen-fuer-alle-groessen

With colorful sock yarn, the color changes—like in this picture—happen automatically.

These knitting skills are needed:
knit stitches, purl stitches, knitting in the round, right-slanting slipped decreases. Crochet skills: chain stitches, slip stitches

You can always use hats, especially now in the cold winter, but also when spring comes around again.

For the following hat patterns, you can use any yarn; the pattern will just turn out finer or chunkier accordingly. Since the hats are started from the cuff, they can be easily adjusted to any head circumference, so you can crochet hats for the whole family.

In addition, all patterns include lots of pictures and detailed explanations, so ambitious beginners can follow them well too.

Beanie Chicago

This beanie is very popular right now. It is also wonderfully versatile. For example, you can make it in one color, with color in the thin pattern rows, or with bold colors in the thicker pattern rows. So with just one pattern, you have lots of possibilities.

Beanie Autumn Joy

A very popular children's hat is the "Autumn Joy" beanie. In addition to classic solid-color yarn, you can also use gradient yarn. This looks especially beautiful with an accent color in the stripes.

Hat and Beanie Little Princess

The "Little Princess" is a versatile hat, because you can crochet it in the short or long version. The pattern explains two ways to attach the beads; just pick your favorite method. But even without beads, this hat is a lovely head covering.

If you're ever in the mood for something unusual, how about a bat scarf?

You can find the pattern here.

It's very easy to knit and still a lot of fun. Depending on what yarn you use, it will turn out wider or narrower. My original is made from fairly thick merino wool, but basically you can use any yarn you like for it. Suitable for beginners!

Here you can even knit two items in one: a hat and a cowl.
You’ll need 50 g with a running length of approx. 145 m.
If you only want the cowl, you can easily knit it longer—it’s described in the pattern. The pattern is beginner-friendly, written out row by row, and also explained in the chart.
Here’s the pattern:

With 2 Bobbel cakes of 200 grams each and a size 3 crochet hook, you can crochet yourself a wonderful cape for spring.

You should know how to make chain stitches, single crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet.

I wish everyone lots of fun crocheting and then, of course, wearing this exceptional piece!
