Whenever vacation time rolls around, I start thinking about what nice little project I could take with me to work on. This year, my first thought was: I’m not taking anything at all this time and will just relax—but that’s just not going to work... Maybe a one-ball project, or one of my many UFOs, something complicated, something simple, something for summer—or maybe even for winter already..... In the end, I usually end up bringing a whole bag of yarn or several projects because I just can’t make up my mind... How about you—what do you like to bring along?
Unless I have something on the needles that needs to be finished urgently, I don’t take anything with me. Not even yarn.
Why? So I have a reason to visit the nearest yarn shop in town. ;-)))
When I go on vacation, I tend to take something “simple” with me, including UFOs. So no crocheting amigurumis where I’d also need stuffing or eyes.
Just simple crochet projects, like sweaters, tunics, or scarves, or doilies, triangle shawls—things like that. Every now and then I need my pattern too—I’ve laminated it so it doesn’t get creased.
When I’m sitting in a fishing boat with my husband, I usually have my sock knitting with me—it’s nice and portable. Socks are usually gifts, and I can never have enough of them on hand :-)
To be honest, most of the time I don’t bring anything… Last year we went on vacation with 10 people and there was always something going on; in the years before that, I simply enjoyed doing nothing for a week—finally having time to read a book!
This year we’re not going on vacation because we’re building a house, but I’d probably take a yarn cake with me and make a simple shawl or a skirt :)
But speaking of taking things with me: We’re temporarily moving in with relatives for three months, and today my better half said I could just pack my yarn into one of the boxes—there’s still room. Haha, sure—that was a box that’ll be sitting in the garage for three months. He really thought I wouldn’t take any yarn with me. Funny, right? :D Of course I’m taking EVERYTHING with me! ;)
This year I took along a cake of gradient yarn for a triangular shawl. But it was so hot that I didn't get very far. Otherwise, though, I think it's ideal because you don't have to bring much, and triangular shawls are usually very easy to crochet. I don't like dealing with complicated things when I'm on the go.
Last summer, I brought along a crocheted openwork cowl and a shopping net, which I could easily work on while riding the train. During our ski vacation, I continued working on my filet curtain. I also had yarn for knitted gloves. Since we’re only planning a short vacation with the grandchildren this summer, I probably won’t be taking any crafts with me for a change. When traveling, I make sure not to pack anything complicated or too bulky.
I always take a selection of cotton yarns with me, plus 2–3 skeins of wool that I want to use to make baby/children’s cardigans, and various needles... stuffing... you never know what you might feel like making *laughs*
And if we happen to pass by a craft store, my husband will gladly open the door for me (and help me pick out great yarn—usually together with our son <3 )...
so definitely cotton yarn and a gradient cake... I’d like to try something new... far away from amigurumi ;-) ... whether it will work out is anyone’s guess.
Then also beads and the matching thread. I also make jewelry to sell. My next exhibition is at the beginning of December—you can never start early enough.
Too much—definitely always too much.
How am I supposed to know what I’ll suddenly feel like working on during those five long days in Holland?
Or imagine if I can’t find a craft store!
And anyway… before I pack another pair of shoes, I’d rather bring this color and that one…
Oh, what am I telling you…
Greetings in anticipation,
Caro
When I do go away—which doesn’t happen often—it’s usually for city trips with lots of sightseeing and other activities. I usually take something with me, but it has to be something that doesn’t require much thought and that I can set aside at any time. And often enough, that knitting project ends up coming home untouched. At most, a few extra balls of yarn suddenly find their way into my bag, because there are, of course, plenty of yarn shops in cities :-)
I always take crochet projects with me on vacation—with knitting projects, the risk would be far too great that the needles would slip out of my work if I had to set them aside quickly...
I usually bring something simple to crochet, with a pattern I can memorize quickly so I don’t need instructions, and that’s perfect for crocheting while doing something else... in recent years, it has always been shawls or scarves...
I always have a big bag of leftover yarn at our little vacation cottage in Hungary.
Every year in late summer and February, I add more to it.
That’s why I’m always crocheting and knitting there with leftover yarn.
This August/September, I’ll probably be making Christmas tree ornaments and little birds, as well as colorful scarves, hats, and mittens.
If I don’t have my big yarn bag with me, my husband immediately asks where it is. He knows I get restless without yarn in the trunk. And he wants to avoid me spending the ice cream budget on sudden yarn-withdrawal shopping sprees....
The bag is waterproof on the inside, so you can take it to the lake and it’ll survive any sudden water attacks from the kids unscathed.
This year is the first time in years that I don’t have to make any more Dragons-themed kites. My two kids have decided they don’t want kites anymore.
So now there’s room for my friend’s Christmas gift. It’s going to be a triangular shawl. I already have the yarn—all that’s missing is the vacation!
