Layering principle + sweatpants are trending (not an ad thread)

Dear everyone,
You’re probably familiar with the layering principle, where you dress in layers so you’re always warm enough, or so you can take off one layer after another if it does get too warm.
Apparently that’s on trend this season. That surprises me a bit, because lots of people do that anyway, but a trend is a trend. :- ) That means: Anyone who dresses in layers doesn’t have to do anything special, but is still totally trendy. Great, right?

And sweatpants are in, too. Yes, out in public and not just in front of the TV.

How do you all feel about it?

Tip: You can also find on Crazypatterns pretty clothes for the transitional season. We don’t have any sweatpants yet at the moment; maybe the sewists would like to take care of that?
Pants, on the other hand, we have plenty of, especially for children and babies.

The onion-skin principle is pretty much unavoidable at the moment with these temperature fluctuations anyway...

I think this sweatpants trend is awful. My older son wears them too. But when he has to go somewhere with us, I insist on jeans. He also has a pair of jog jeans—they look like jeans but are as comfortable as sweatpants.
I think those short grey sweatpants are especially awful; they look as if they’ve been cut off. They’re apparently absolutely on trend too, but I think they’re dreadful.

Hello everyone,

the layering principle just makes sense. And you can wear it discreetly, too. Originally, the lower layers were visible. And I still remember well that my father thought that was unacceptable because he didn’t consider it being properly dressed.

I also think this sweatpants trend is absolutely awful. I already feel silly when I quickly pop in somewhere before training because I’ve forgotten something. But I don’t think I have the right sweatpants for this trend, and certainly not the figure for it either.

But another new trend comes to mind. Around here, women have recently started tucking the front of their shirts into their pants—but only a hand’s width above the belt buckle, with the rest left out. I noticed exactly the same thing on vacation too.
Have you seen this yet?
Best regards, Birgit

Hi Birgit! My husband was the first to notice this “T-shirt halfway in the pants” trend.
It looks awful to me, too. So it’s either “all the way in or all the way out”—but I prefer “out,” since I don’t have the figure for “in”...

I just had to read the school rules in our local community. They explicitly prohibit wearing hot pants, crop tops, and sweatpants. But nobody follows them...

@ Nadeleule : To me, that always comes across as if it just slipped out, too. But OK.

@ haekeltherapie : “Wohngemeinde” sounds small. Is that an elementary school or a secondary school? We only have one elementary school. There’s nothing about clothing in the school rules, but I’d be quite happy for sweatpants to be included.

Hi everyone!

We often “layer up” too when we’re outside on days when you can’t really predict the weather. I have “sweaty kids” — you basically have to be able to take their clothes off at the first ray of sunshine ;)

Jogging pants: At home, yes; for sports or on the way there or back, of course, but otherwise, not really.
My teenage daughter loves jogging pants ... but so far I’ve successfully managed to keep her from leaving the house in them, let alone going to school in them.
Back in the ’90s, when I was a teenager, I already thought it was totally embarrassing when someone came to school in jogging pants or wore them around in their free time.

Best regards - Nina

I’ve seen this “tuck the shirt halfway into the pants” look quite a few times. It looks great on very young or very slim people! I couldn’t pull something like that off. ;-)
But the other day I saw a woman in her 70s wearing it. She was slim, but it still looked pretty silly. I think it’s great when older women dress fashionably—my mom does it too and always looks spiffy despite being 76—but you really don’t have to follow every trend. ;-)

Layered look: An absolute must in the current weather! When I try to decide these days whether to wear a T-shirt or a sweater, I basically always choose wrong. Either I’m freezing or I’m sweating. So: absolutely in favor of the layered look! :)

Sweatpants: As was already said. For sports and on the way there (and back home again ;)) absolutely okay, quickly going to the bakery in the morning or something like that is absolutely okay too... But anything beyond that: no. As a schoolgirl, I used to think a bit differently... But it’s just the way it is that you feel completely different, behave completely differently, and give off a completely different impression when you’re dressed “respectably” (meaning normally ;)).

Shirt half tucked into your pants:
It depends... On some people it looks really good, some should probably leave it alone... It depends a lot on the woman’s body and on the shirt. I wouldn’t do it; on me it would just look as if I hadn’t looked in the mirror after getting dressed :D

The school rules I mentioned above apply to all grades (1st–9th).
By the way, I’m from Oberentfelden, Switzerland. This municipality has about 7,700 residents.

I’ve been familiar with the layering principle for quite a while thanks to my daughter. She also tucks her shirts into her pants in the front and leaves them out the rest of the way. It looks good on her, but it’s also a matter of age and, as always, a matter of body type. My son is a die-hard sweatpants wearer. Though he doesn’t wear sweatpants—he wears track pants. He even wears them to school, and I don’t mind at all :) He’s been wearing these track pants for many years now. That’s his style (he doesn’t follow fashion trends).

Hi,

I think sweatpants are totally fine for the couch or just lounging around. But since I’ve never been the type to chase trends or general beauty ideals, everyone should wear what they like and what makes them feel comfortable. It doesn’t have to appeal to me personally. Jeans were frowned upon many years ago, too. And today, people wear them for almost any occasion and in all social circles.

At home, I always walk around in sweatpants, too. But if I have to go out for more than just walking the dog, I do dress “properly.” I just feel better that way. ;-)

@ haekeltherapie: we used to have the school in town like that too. But by now it’s purely an elementary school. I think fashion trends like that also come up more often in the higher grades. Although sweatpants have already caught on here too.

I heard on the radio recently that some school has now introduced a dress code for PARENTS because they’ve been picking up their kids in “sloppy outfits” (sweatpants, long pajama pants, etc.) more and more often, and the school wanted to draw attention to the importance of setting a good example. I actually found it kind of funny that this was necessary :D

We live in a village of 3,000 people, so you can’t exactly go to the bakery or places like that in sweatpants without people gossiping about you behind your back.

Some parents could use a dress code, too. At our son’s graduation—in the city, mind you—some parents showed up in baggy T-shirts and scruffy pants, topped off with worn-out Crocs.
You really felt sorry for the kids (who were all dressed to the nines)....

I'm fighting on 3 fronts at home against sweatpants takeovers. My husband and my daughter wear nothing else, and my son was the same until about six months ago. Only with him I then got unexpected support from his friends, who eventually laughed at him.
So for him now it's: at school or when we go shopping, proper pants; playground, sports field, and romping around with friends, the comfy pants are OK.
With my daughter, this will sort itself out now with the new school year; vacation time does tempt her into baggy pants.
With my husband, I always have to be firm.
He would also be the type to say: I'm going to the school festival in slob clothes... But not with me. After all the years we've known each other now, he does have a perfectly decent selection of jeans and fabric pants and great shirts. He refuses to wear button-down shirts; except for weddings and funerals he doesn't wear any, but that's not a must either.

For me personally, sweatpants are very welcome at home and when I do sports with the kids or take the dog out for an evening walk. But otherwise, please no.

Oh yes, and layered dressing—I couldn't survive without it. Thanks to the air conditioning at work, it's always cold there, so I always have a cardigan and scarves with me.

Shirt untucked or tucked into the pants, I hadn't really noticed that yet; I think that age group isn't represented among my relatives and acquaintances.....

I love my sweatpants.....
And I don’t see anything wrong with wearing them to go shopping, walk the dog, or take a stroll.... Maybe it’s just a way of life?!

As for tucking a shirt into your pants.... You usually do that when you’re wearing a belt with a big buckle.... So everyone can see that it’s not the person wearing it who’s fat, but the belt.

I loooove the layered look! Preferably with leggings, a tunic or long shirt, a vest, a jacket, wrist warmers, a scarf... or with wide-leg pants, a cacheur, a shirt, a jacket, a vest..... or with slim-fit pants, a skirt, a shirt, a jacket, a vest, arm warmers, a scarf.....
I just can’t get into sweatpants for everyday wear—I actually only wear them for Pilates or jogging :)) and when I picture women in the office wearing them (apparently there are even “high-end” versions of sweatpants), it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up a bit (I get chills) ;-)

The layered look isn’t just super comfortable, it’s also приятно cozy and warm — I definitely think it’s great... By the way, I love my sweatpants too, and I also dare to go shopping in them ;-)

I’m bumping this up because, with the cold weather, it might be a good idea to layer up.
