I don't understand the pattern...

Could someone please explain exactly what I need to do?

It says: knit into the 2nd row below, pick up the yarn, and
pull the loop up to the required length.

But since it goes across a right-side row, a wrong-side row, and then another right-side row, I just
don't get it.
See image.
Thank you very much in advance!

Hi Helena,

the picture is pretty small. Do you maybe have another picture of the finished project where you can clearly see the pattern?
I think I know how to knit it, but I’d like to double-check with a picture.

For now, here’s a link—maybe it’ll help you:
Slip-Stitch Lattice by Elizzza

Best regards
Michaela

Hi Michaela :-)

The picture gets bigger if you click on it...
But I’ve just taken another one of the finished top...
I hope this one’s big enough

Here’s a slightly larger version, but unfortunately it’s getting blurrier and blurrier...

Dear Helena,
try it this way (the edge stitches are added on the right and left, of course):
Row 1: Knit all stitches.
Row 2: Purl all stitches.
Row 3: K2, * K2tog, 1 yarn over, K4, repeat from *...
Row 4: Purl all stitches.
Row 5: K2, * insert the needle 2 rows down between the knit-together stitches and the yarn over—essentially under the crosswise thread between these two stitches—pick up the yarn and draw up a long loop; the yarn will then sit on the right needle like a yarn over, K2, then insert the needle again in the same spot 2 rows down, pick up the yarn, draw up a long loop, knit 4 stitches, repeat from * throughout. This will bring you back to the original number of stitches!
6th row: Purl all stitches.
7th–10th rows: Knit exactly the same way, but offset according to the knitting chart.
I’m assuming that rows 3–10 are repeated.
Hope this helps!
Best regards and good luck, Annette

Yeah, the way Annette wrote it, it could work.
It definitely looks great in the pictures. I’m thinking about giving it a try myself. :-)

Hello, you two dears :-)
Thanks so much for the help!

Unfortunately, I’m almost at my wit’s end...
I watched the video, but then no hole forms, and that’s what I like about this pattern.

If I have to pick up the yarn twice, a horizontal strand forms at the front :-( whether I just pull it up or knit it in right away. It actually makes sense, but I only realized it once I was knitting. I also tried going around the back—that was a silly idea, haha. It would have been smarter to look into it first...

I’m going to try moving the horizontal strand to the back now... if that doesn’t help either, I really don’t know what to do next... Such a shame!

Well, figures; moving it to the back works if I knit it in right away, but then I only have one strand each time instead of a V...
I hope someone has another idea!
Otherwise, I’ll just look for a different pattern.

Isn’t there a written pattern? Please post the link.

Dear Helena, don’t despair! Have you tried it following my description above? I just tried it myself and got exactly the result I wanted! It creates a cute little hole! Now we just need to figure out where exactly you’re having trouble with the instructions...
So this is what it looks like for me: the spot where you need to insert the needle from the front is right in the middle between the decreased stitches from the 3rd row; those are exactly 2 horizontal strands lying one below the other. Insert the needle below them and draw up the yarn. Then knit 2 stitches and insert the needle again in exactly the same spot and draw up the yarn. It’s a little awkward the second time. Now you should have a nice V made of elongated stitches, with a small hole at the bottom.
Best regards, Annette

I also tried it the way Annette described, and the little hole does form, but it looks slightly different than in the picture.
In the picture, the strands look kind of doubled...

Hi, Michaela, maybe the piece was knitted with double yarn? The garter-stitched stitches further down kind of look like that—could that be it??

Possibly. I can’t really make it out very well.

Helena, does the pattern mention whether this piece is knitted with the yarn held double?

I found a link to a project where you can see the pattern very clearly.
In this case, it’s knitted with ribbon yarn.

WOW! You guys are amazing!

The only explanation I gave for that step was in the first post: It says: “Knit into the 2nd row below, pick up the yarn, and pull the loop to the desired length.”

I’ve been trying it the whole time with the cross strand, not the yarn on my finger!
Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry!

Thank you so much for your help; Michaela & Annette <3

You’re welcome.
I’m curious to see how the pattern turns out for you.
Maybe you could upload a picture so we can see it a little better. :-)

Sure, I’ll do that.
But I’ve only just started and tried the pattern on a gauge swatch.
So it’ll take a while yet...

Hi Helena,

I just grabbed some needles and yarn and got almost the same result as Annette described so nicely:

Row 1: knit all stitches
Row 2: purl all stitches
Row 3: knit 2, * knit 2 together, slip 1 stitch, knit 1, and pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch, knit 4 *, repeat the section between the asterisks to the end of the row
Row 4: purl all stitches
Row 5: knit 2, * insert the needle 2 rows below, exactly between “knit 2 together” and “slip 1 stitch, knit 1, and pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch” – knit a stitch through the gap – just knit normally through that hole (the stitch becomes longer because it is pulled up over 2 rows), then knit 2 stitches and do the same again into the hole where you already pulled up the first long stitch, knit 4, repeat from * to the end of the row
Row 6: purl all stitches
Rows 7–10: same as rows 3–6, just offset by 4 stitches

I used a very soft yarn (alpaca) for the pattern, which is why the holes are not so pronounced.

Don’t make it more complicated than it is — just follow the instructions above stitch by stitch. I’m sure you’ll get the same result.

That was quick. I was still trying things out when you’d already solved the problem another way......

I’ve also knitted a few more rows.
I think it looks really nice now.
The second loop stitch is a bit fiddly, but you get the hang of it pretty quickly.

I Googled again and actually found a pattern with a video for this pattern.
It’s knitted exactly as Annette and KnitBig-FeelGreat explained. ☺
The pattern is called “Embroidery” in English.

Wow, Michaela, how did you even find that? Awesome! I bookmarked the site right away—there are tons of other pattern ideas there, too...

All I can say is Pinterest. ;-)
But the site really is great—my head is already spinning from all the inspiration. ;-)))

Ohhh, great. I saved that right away, too. Now I just need a site where I can find two more hands to help out....

You guys are really great!
What else can I say?
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Yeah, once you know how, it works out just fine—even for me :-)

Michaela: I’ve bookmarked the site too, and I’ll definitely take a closer look at it after I finish this top.
I hope I can finish it before my vacation on August 7.
By the way, Meril turned out beautifully! I made it with “Schooppel-Zauberwolle, durch die Blume” 100g/800m.
It’s truly magical, and I always call it “Watermelon” ;-)

KnitBig-FeelGreat: Thank you so much to you, too, for the detailed description and all your effort!
You put that so nicely.
I was just completely stumped!

Oh, and just for your information:
The original top was knitted with “Cinnabar by Louisa Harding.”
