I love
perfume—I never leave the house without it.
The last one I bought was Poême by Lancôme.
It’s a sweet scent; I tend to prefer sweet and slightly heavier fragrances.
My favorite scent is Stylessence by Jil Sander. I took that perfume with me on both of our trips to New Zealand, and whenever I put it on now, I’m back there for a brief moment....
Do certain scents bring back images and memories for you, too?
I can’t find a perfume that suits me, and I’m too unenthusiastic to spend a lot of time looking for one. Actually, I’d love to smell like freshly mowed grass, but unfortunately that doesn’t exist as a perfume :-). I like fresh “green” scents, but everything that’s been marketed to me as “green” so far has been too sweet and too heavy for my taste. But I find many scents very pleasant on other people.
@Michaela, that’s how it is for me with many smells, tastes, and sounds—they trigger some kind of memory. I especially like the smell of cypress trees: when they warm up in the sun and give off a very intense scent, I’m instantly 10 years old again and back at the Black Sea :-).
@Inna
I love it! I always feel the same way about songs.
When I hear certain music from the ’80s, I’m instantly transported to Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. ;-)
I’m allergic to perfume ingredients, so I leave immediately if someone smells of it more than just subtly. That’s why we only use deodorant and similar products—and even then, only ones with no scent or a very subtle one.
However, I’m a huge fan of natural scents. I love walking through forests and meadows, and I’m totally into tea with natural aromas. It brings back memories of carefree times for me.....
Well, right now I love the Playboy fragrances. But I like a lot of others, too. Hmm, now that I think about it, I actually like all perfumes. Even the men’s ones. Hihihi
@Michaela
One of the nice things about getting older is the satisfying thought of having experienced so much—all those memories keep confirming that, and it’s great!
My favorite scent has been Casmir by Chopard for about 25 years.
According to style advice, I should actually prefer more tart fragrance notes, but there’s nothing better—except freshly mown grass, damp forest floor, or freshly bathed babies... but unfortunately, those don’t come in bottles.
And now you can laugh: I love the smell of erasers :-)
That brings back memories of elementary school and my wonderful teacher. And in two years I’ll be smelling it regularly again when Junior starts school... I’m already looking forward to it. Some people jokingly claim that’s the reason I spaced my children out over the years.
@ Inna and Michaela,
Memories: My oldest comes to visit for a week once a year... I put on the perfume and when we hug, she says every time:
“I feel like a child again, Mom’s scent is in the air!”
@Sabine I used to really like Cashmir, too.
But I’ve noticed that my “sense of smell” has changed somehow.
Fragrances that I used to love, I literally can’t smell anymore today. For example, I used to absolutely love Laura Biagotti’s Roma, but today that scent makes me shudder...
Weird, right?
Unfortunately, some of my favorite scents from back then aren’t available anymore. Like Nuit d’êté by Joop or a certain one by Shiseido (I don’t even remember what it was called). It’s a shame, really....
I’ve loved the perfume NAF NAF since my youth ............. I was given a little bottle for Christmas last year; it’s not that easy to buy, unfortunately you can’t find it on the shelves anymore.
Otherwise, I really like perfumes with vanilla. I always have a few different ones on hand.
Unfortunately, I don’t like overly floral perfumes. Now and then, it can also be a bit more tart, something that reminds me more of a men’s fragrance, but I still like that very much.
For everyday wear, I prefer light, fresh scents. I have a few from Boss or Armani—I can’t even say exactly what they’re called right now. For the evening, I might go for something a bit heavier, like Armani Code.
I also really love the scent of Dove, whether it’s in deodorant, shower gel, or body lotion.
I used to think the Adidas scents were great, but at some point—especially right after the fall of the Berlin Wall—almost everyone was using them. (That’s just how it was in the East; it was a total hit at Intershop....)
That’s why I find that scent almost repulsive today.
My favorites are Joop Thrill woman for everyday wear (it’s not overpowering and smells fresh) and Jil Sander Everose for going out, since it’s a little more intense and lasts a long time.
I used to love Roma and Tresor, but at some point I guess I just got tired of them.
On my husband, I like Gaultier best (the regular one in the “men’s bottle”)—it reminds me of our early years...
That’s so funny—I used to love Roma, too, but it’s just not my thing anymore. Last year, I ran into a woman who smelled amazing in a restaurant restroom. I actually went up and talked to her. The perfume is by Gucci and is called Premiere. It’s absolutely gorgeous, and I got it for Christmas last year. But it’s a bit heavy and really only for evenings. I don’t wear perfume during the day anyway, since I work in a tea shop and by the end of the workday, I actually smell like tea :-)
I used to always wear a fragrance by Armani - unfortunately, it was discontinued.
After that, I had a really hard time with perfume,
until I discovered BVLGARI - Omnia Crystalline (white bottle) 5-6 years ago.
The scent is lightly floral, not overpowering, and suitable for any occasion.
@Arni
Hihi, that used to be the case for me, too—after working at the library, I always “smelled” like old books. But since I love the smell anyway, that was just fine with me. ;-)
It’s just a shame that wool doesn’t have a scent.... ;-)))
