Dear users, dear authors,
in Argentina, remains of a previously unknown dino species have been discovered.
The researchers have named the new dino "Gualicho"; like T-Rex, it has short arms with two large fingers each, and it is a carnivore.

------------>>>Which dino do you like best?
Please everyone join in and write down your favorite dino.

I thought we could make a dino special for this. Here are the current dino favorites from the Crazypatterns shop. I hope many more new ones will be uploaded.

Triceratops Tripi

Triceratops Tripi is very sweet and cuddly, 25 cm tall and 25 cm long—you absolutely need him.
Grab the blue yarn and get going.

and here’s another little dino—not amigurumi, but totally cute
E-book: "tired dinosaur"

The dino hat for a baby photo shoot is incredibly cute and a lovely highlight.
Crochet it right now for your baby or as a gift.

@Authors
You can introduce your dino patterns here in the thread, as always with information about the material, technique, difficulty level, and what makes the pattern special. Of course with an image, text, and link.

@everyone
have fun with the dinos : )

Fips the Pterosaur, crochet pattern

Hello, let me introduce myself: “I’m Fips, the pterosaur.” Well, there’s a rumor going around that we’re already extinct, but as you can see, that’s not quite true. You’ll find us in children’s rooms and on shelves, flying from mobiles and in children’s hands. And most importantly: we’re so colorful that we can always be crocheted in your favorite color.

So dig into that box of leftover yarn and start crocheting! The pterosaur is about 20 cm tall from its feet to the tip of its crest. The PDF pattern is 14 pages long with 32 pictures, and it’s easy to follow. Materials: acrylic yarn, 50 g/150 m. You’ll need half a ball in the main color and a few leftovers. Skills required: spiral rounds, joined rounds, color changes, single crochet, slip stitches, foundation chain, turning chain, half double crochet.

We got a dino for Christmas :)

It was made entirely from imagination, but that just made the kids love it even more.
It was also a big hit with our friends, so in January the crochet hook came out again for 6 more dinos.

Of course there is a crochet pattern, and it’s beginner-friendly and illustrated.

My dears,

I have a very general question. I regularly crochet dragons and dinosaurs for my kids. But they’re based on movies and TV shows.
My son already has Toothless, Kotz, and Würg, and my daughter is currently getting Stormfly.
I don’t want to post patterns for these, though. I don’t want to infringe on copyright. Whether it’s from a major studio like DreamWorks or a recreated dinosaur from another website—even if there’s no pattern, the image itself still belongs to someone else.

So, now to the heart of my question.
For the oversized dragons (they’re all over 1 meter tall), I’ve designed my own wings and legs (my husband helped me with the design).
If I now use other bodies for them—my kids’ imaginations know no bounds—can I incorporate these into my patterns?

And I hope the dragons and dinosaurs will still be in style this winter, because right now I’m completely swamped with my kids’ special requests.

That works out perfectly—my dinosaur is currently being test-crocheted, and hopefully it’ll be in my shop tomorrow :-)

Hi Pe-Ka,

I think it’s great that your kids inspire you to be so creative :-)

Whether you can use the patterns for your own designs depends, I think, on how closely they still resemble the “original”—or whether they clearly incorporate enough of your own ideas to pass as their own “kind.”

Ultimately, when you see it, you shouldn’t say, “Oh, that looks just like…,” but rather, “Oh, how cute/funny! Great idea!” ;-)

After all, you have to honestly assess for yourself how much of your own creativity is in that dino.

Best wishes, Stefanie

Another idea:
The next time your kids draw a picture of a cool fantasy character, you could try crocheting something like that—no matter how “crooked and lopsided” it may be.

Those would be completely original creations that no one else has—and they’d definitely be funny too :-D

This is Dino Paulchen.

He is approx. 28 cm long and approx. 18 cm tall. To crochet him, you need the following
  • Yarn (green and a little black)
  • stuffing
  • safety eyes approx. 10 mm
  • 2.5 crochet hook
  • stitch marker
  • sewing needle

And here is the pattern.Dino Paulchen crochet pattern

Dear Aramis,

thank you for your reply.

I’d already thought about the drawings. At work, there’s a picture of the “Wild Zoo” that my son drew for me when he was 5 years old. I’ve always thought it would bring him a lot of joy if I brought his creations to life—from paper to crochet.

But now that he’s noticed I have time again, he immediately put the dinosaur reference book under my nose, and now I have to make him a Spinosaurus. Well, that’ll be the new dino.
And my daughter has a magic water pony in her coloring book that she absolutely wants, too. So the dragon plans and the “Wild Zoo” plans are on hold for now. But I can still squeeze in a few small projects here and there. Let’s see what they’ll ask for next.
