Dear users, dear authors,
What do you think of sequins? Do you like them? Do you enjoy using them to decorate crafts or clothing, or are they just “fancy nonsense”? Tell us what you think.
I have to admit I’m a huge Build-A-Bear fan—so many of the stuffed animals’ outfits have sequins on them. I don’t trust these things one bit. I’m past the age where I’d still be wildly roughhousing with my stuffed animals, but clothes that are mostly decorated with sequins don’t look like they’re built to last. For example, on my bunny girl’s dress, the straps and the belt are made of sequins. These sequins are only held together by a thin elastic thread, which won’t last forever. On another item of clothing, some have already come off or split in half in the middle.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend them for small children.
I’ll echo the same sentiment... I don’t like sequins, and I don’t like metallic fibers in wool either. I’ve never been the glitter-and-sparkle type; I’ve always been more practical and natural.
I’m also absolutely not a fan of glitter and sequins of any kind. I have a few shirts with just a handful of sequins on them, but I’ve removed the ones that didn’t fall off in the wash. On stuffed animals, I find them visually very tacky, and they’re scratchy—so they’re not really suitable for cuddling. Plus, there’s still a risk that children might swallow them.
I’ll admit, I love anything that glitters and sparkles. I like sequins, too—but not on clothes or accessories. They’re just too scratchy for me. I have a great sequined shirt—I just couldn’t resist it—but it’s hanging unused in my closet because the sequins scratch through the fabric so much that I can’t stand wearing it for even 5 minutes....
That’s why I don’t use sequins in my shawls either. I’d rather use beads or a soft glittery yarn.
Well, I wouldn’t put them on toys, but I would on decorations. I glued some onto my fairy house as little flowers. It’s just sitting there anyway. But on clothes, I find them totally impractical, and somehow they always remind me of my grandma.
I don’t really need them myself. But my daughter and her friends love anything that glitters and sparkles, and there can never be enough beads and sequins on the crocheted jewelry I make for them every now and then.
That said, I have to admit I don’t use them for really little princesses—it’s way too dangerous that they might swallow something. They’re always very happy with glittery threads and bobble yarn instead.
Otherwise, sequins are mostly used for decorations or as eyes—with a bead in the middle—for bag charms for adults.
