Since I’m still a beginner at crocheting, I’ve often made typical beginner mistakes in my projects.
I’ve already learned from some of them and would like to share my tips.
I’d love it if the pros here could also share a few tips on how to avoid typical beginner mistakes in crocheting.
- Taking on projects that are too big or complicated: Especially as a beginner, it’s better to start with small, simple projects to see quick results and get some practice.
- Crocheting too tightly: It’s better to use a hook that’s at least two sizes larger than what’s indicated on the label.
- Crocheting too many or too few stitches in a row (especially when crocheting in straight rows, e.g., a scarf): Tie a piece of yarn or attach a stitch marker with a carabiner to, for example, every 10th stitch, and use it to count the stitches in each row
- Can’t find the beginning when crocheting in the round (e.g., a circular scarf): Tie a piece of yarn or attach a stitch marker to the first stitch of the round. Reattach it accordingly at the start of each new round.
- Failing to weave in the end of the yarn:
The end of the yarn should be woven in; otherwise, the knot will stick out like a “bump.” Additionally, the end of the yarn can come loose and cause unraveling of the crocheted piece.
These are the mistakes I made right at the beginning. Feel free to add to the list :-)
