Looking for a pattern for a hat using size 4 crochet hook

Does anyone know of a crochet pattern for a men’s hat using hook size 3–4? My husband picked out yarn for that hook size, but I don’t have a pattern. It should be suitable for beginners.
Thank you very much

hi Arni

which yarn did he choose? I have a pattern for a hat; according to the label, the yarn used would also be for hook size 4, but I ended up making it with hook size 5.0.

It would be this one here: Zebra Hat

Hello Berlidesign, thank you very much
The yarn is called Schachenmayer original Universa
However, I think he had a very simple hat in mind.
Best regards

HUHU...
well, without the ears and mane, it would just be a plain hat....

grin

so now I know what kind of yarn you have :)

have you ever crocheted a hat before?

I’ll write down the basic steps for you now, so you can crochet a nice hat

First, let’s work out the size of the hat

For that, we need the head circumference of the future wearer.

Hat width: (head circumference ÷ 3.14) + 1 cm
Example: 56 ÷ 3.14 = 17.83, round up to 18 cm + 1 cm = 19 cm

Hat length 1:
Hat width + 2 cm
Example: 18 + 2 cm = 20 cm

Total hat length (hat length 2):
then add another 2 to 3 cm for the hat edging in single crochet or hdc
Hat length 1 + 2 cm
Example: 20 cm + 2 cm = 22 cm

so that means if your sweetheart has a head circumference of 56 cm, the hat needs to be 19 cm wide (= diameter of the circle)

and 20 cm long in pattern, plus another 2-3 cm for an edging or hat brim

************************

I think that’s clear :)

R1:
Start with a magic ring or 2 ch

into the MR or into the 1st ch, crochet 6 hdc

R2
double every hdc = 12

R3
double every 2nd hdc = 18

and so on. So you increase by 6 stitches every round until the circle is the right width for the hat

Once you’ve reached that, just keep crocheting in length - so don’t increase or decrease any more stitches!

Now start the pattern

work alternately:
sc, dc, sc, dc, ........

crochet that until hat length 1 is reached

then crochet another 3 cm in length, but here work only single crochet or hdc, whichever you like better, then bind off, weave in ends, and you’re done :)

Oh, great, thank you so much. Yes, I’ve crocheted a hat before, but only with really thick yarn (hook size 10). I wasn’t sure whether it would work the same way with thinner yarn. Thank you so much. I’ll try it out right away.

With thicker yarn, you’ll just finish faster… haha

it works with any yarn weight :_)

You could also use two strands of yarn and crochet with a size 6 or 7 hook :-) Just thought of that

No. He specifically picked that yarn because it isn’t that thick. He thinks my thicker yarn is too feminine! (He’s a bit weird sometimes) :-) but thanks

Hi Nicole,
The hat is finished and looks great! But crocheting is more fun with thick yarn :-)
Thanks so much for the tips!

Hey, that’s great...... I’m glad it turned out well and, above all, that it was well received :)

Yeah, thick yarn does have its advantages :)

I just found your post today. I was supposed to make a hat out of thin yarn. Thank you so much! It’s working out great. I was about to give up.

Best regards, Susi
