Picking up dropped stitches?

Dear users, dear authors,
when crocheting, dropped stitches aren’t that difficult to deal with, because crocheted work doesn’t come apart that easily. Unless, of course, you pull directly on the yarn. :- )

When knitting, it’s naturally a bit more difficult.
How do you handle this?
Are there any tricks?

What do you call dropped stitches? Is there a specific term for them?

I use a suitable crochet hook and work the dropped stitch back up.

I do it like Marlene.
With complicated patterns like lace patterns, though, I can’t manage it. In that case, the only thing that helps is knitting back, because even when unraveling I can’t find the yarn overs and knitted-together stitches anymore. Michaela from Wollness Designs once had a great trick with the “lifeline”; you can find it here: https://www.crazypatterns.net/de/forum/topic/84804/tipps-und-tricks-eure-besten-handarbeits-tipps-im-juni

In stockinette stitch, I also crochet them back up, but normally I use a lifeline.

I do it exactly the way you’ve all described. I haven’t tried using a lifeline yet, though.

Thanks to Mel, I sometimes use the lifeline method, too. Otherwise, I just use my crochet hook.

What keywords would someone use to search for a topic like this in the Materials and Techniques thread?

The keywords “lifeline” and “rescue line” already exist, but of course not everyone is familiar with those terms.

“Picking up dropped stitches” would be a good term, I think.

Drop stitches are—usually double—yarn overs that aren’t knitted but are dropped in the next row or round.

How common are these dropped stitches?

Dropped stitches are something you do intentionally. They actually come up quite often as a design element.
If I were searching for it, my first thought would probably be “runs,” but I’m not sure everyone would see it that way. As a general term, you could perhaps use “fixing mistakes.”

I really appreciate how enthusiastically you’re helping me with my search for keywords and sharing your expertise with me. :- )
Thank you.

Check this out, Josefa—this is a “dropped-stitch top.” The purple stitches are dropped stitches; they’re created by yarn overs that are intentionally dropped in the next row. This makes these stitches longer and airier.

I’d also enter “picking up dropped stitches” as a search term. I feel the same way as Marlene.

Mel, that’s a pretty sweater. Did you just knit that?

Monika, that sweater was one of my first larger knitting projects. It’s already a few years old, but I really love wearing it in the summer.

I’ve linked this thread under both the keywords “dropped stitches” and “picking up dropped stitches,” since both topics are discussed in this thread. I’ve also noted that there’s a difference between intentional dropped stitches and accidentally dropped stitches.
