Hello to all customers and interested visitors here on Crazypatterns,
it would be great to hear your thoughts on this. I’m sure the authors and vendors are paying close attention to this thread and reading along with great interest. :- ) My questions for you: How do you go about buying patterns? Do you go online, browse around, discover something you like, and buy it? Or do you specifically check whether Author/Seller X, who has repeatedly impressed you with lovely patterns, has something new? When you go online, do you already have a clear idea of what you want to buy or make, or do you let yourself be tempted by the patterns and product presentations?
I think this is going to be an interesting discussion. I’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to share their thoughts in this thread. Have fun!
I crochet a lot and enjoy it, and I have already bought many patterns on CP.
But it annoys me every time that some authors state that you are not allowed to sell the self-madeprojects in small quantities at regional markets.
I don’t buy these patterns on principle.
I always find it astonishing that a pattern buyer wants to have the right to sell the crocheted items for a pattern purchase price of perhaps 3 to 5 euros.
You buy a pattern, but not the right to use that pattern (after all, someone else’s idea!) for your own profit.
So the aim is to make a profit for yourself from the work of others, whether on a small or larger scale.
Unfortunately, this is a fairly widespread taker mentality without any corresponding compensation.
That really must not be overlooked when insisting on using other people’s patterns to make money.
At the moment, I’m buying up old patterns or magazines that show dolls. And even on these old things (some 30 years old or more), it says that you may not sell the doll items made from the pattern commercially.
A business is when you want to sell something for a profit ....
So basically the topic is ancient, and yet this idea still seems to exist: that one somehow has a right to want, to be allowed, to be able to use other people’s ideas commercially and for profit.
Where is the appreciation and the financial compensation if you use other people’s patterns for free to make a profit for yourself?
Not buying these patterns “on principle” suggests that there would be something wrong with a pattern creator and developer not wanting others to use their ideas profitably without payment. It is the buyer’s attitude that is not okay.
