that's relatively easy
you start with a magic ring.
just leave the yarn in a larger loop at the very first chain stitch
then you crochet into the ring, e.g. 9 single crochets (or as many as you like)
and then you pull the ring smaller by simply pulling on the yarn end, and then you have the beginning of a hat, or the part that sits at the back of the head.
and then a slip stitch at the end to finish the row.
and then you just keep going round by round as usual, closing each round with a slip stitch.
The slip stitch is so there are no "steps". = unsightly jumps from one row level to the next
After the slip stitch, just make turning chains in the number that fits the technique you've chosen
in the first few rows, you should also crochet twice into every second stitch, at least until the circumference has reached the size you want.
You can also do this really well with double crochet or half double crochet.
The ribbing at the front, which then sits on the forehead or over the ears, should definitely be done with single crochet so it holds nice and firmly and the hat doesn't slip off so easily.
but in the shop on Crazypatterns, as far as I know, there are tons of patterns for hats, including ones with lots of pictures.

have fun :)
Crocheting a hat is definitely easier than crocheting gloves
once you've got the hang of the slip stitches etc., it works really nicely.
You / you all will manage it
and if necessary, you can always ask the pattern seller for help
