Hi again. My 4-year-old niece is insisting that I teach her how to crochet. I’ve already tried a few times and failed every time—she just keeps making the same mistakes over and over. Maybe I’m just not cut out to be a teacher. How can you teach a 4-year-old to crochet? She runs around and tells me every two minutes that I should “show her how to crochet” :-)) Please help me, or I’ll soon be running around like a headless chicken :-))
I’d say patience is the only thing that’ll help :-) Maybe you should take another really close look at why she keeps making the same mistakes over and over. It could be that when you’re explaining it, you’re simply not mentioning or demonstrating something very basic because it’s become routine for you. Or it might just be that a four-year-old doesn’t yet have full coordination and motor skills—which is completely normal at that age.
And even if she repeats the mistakes a few more times, eventually something will click and she’ll understand how it works correctly. She seems very motivated, after all, so it’s definitely worth continuing to support her. And it’s precisely these kinds of hands-on activities that help develop her skills in a playful way at this age. So you should definitely stick with it and keep things relaxed and fun. Have fun, both of you :-)
As far as I know, kids usually start out by making lots of long chains of chain stitches,
either with a crochet hook or with their fingers.
And once that works with the chain-stitch snakes, they move on to single crochet stitches.
You can use those chain-stitch snakes right away for something, like playing with dolls.
Of course, you can also use two strands of different colors for the chain-stitch snakes, which makes them look much more colorful right away.
Maybe that would be a good option for the little one to start with?
Sit her on your lap, guide her hands, and show her very slowly. That’s how I taught my nieces. The first thing we made was a little blanket for her doll.
Best regards, Hilde
I think it would be good to have a specific goal, like making a blanket for her dolls.
Even a child this age can understand that, and it’ll motivate her to keep at it.
Of course, kids this age make mistakes when crocheting. Beginners of all ages make mistakes.
I can only advise you to be patient and keep showing her how to do it over and over again.
Hi Karonana3,
I think it’s great that your niece is so interested in crafts and won’t let you brush her off. :-))
I can imagine that this can be pretty exhausting for you.
I can only agree with the tip to start with finger crocheting.
I remember my childhood: decades ago, I started crocheting that way myself (also at about 4 years old). With my fingers, first endless chain stitches; yes, I even learned single crochet and double crochet before I even wanted to hold a crochet hook and got one from my mother. But that was because of the crochet hook, which I had no connection to at all, and at that age I didn’t understand what it was all about or why I should hold the hook one way one time and another way the next. At that age, I was also far from patient enough to finish something of my own quickly.
But I could crochet finger chain stitches for hours with great results and on my own (without that awful crochet hook).
Have fun learning, and keep us posted!
I’m not sure if 4 is really the right age for crocheting. If your niece isn’t ready for it yet, you might have to wait another year or two. You shouldn’t overwhelm a child. Maybe start by showing her a few videos and see if she can stay focused and watch them all the way through.
Hi, I’m having the same experience with my granddaughter. We practice sitting side by side, and when it doesn’t work out, she realizes she’s reached her limit. The next time we meet, we try again, and she ends up making chain stitches. Of course, they don’t look quite like Grandma’s, but she crocheted them herself, and that’s encouraging. To cheer you up: it takes time, and it’s important for the child to realize on her own that she’s simply still too young.
I’d take a playful approach.
Don’t expect her to crochet properly—just see what she does with the yarn and crochet hook.
I don’t think it’s a big deal if she makes mistakes; it’s just part of the learning process.
I was older than 4 when I learned to crochet.
I was already in school by then.
