I’m new here and new to knitting in general. I’ve ventured into something easy—difficulty level 1 (!). Unfortunately, I don’t seem to understand the “knitting chart” correctly;
I’d like to knit a little bird. Things were going pretty well up to Round 17 (even though I’m knitting with 4 needles, so I have the work spread across 3 needles—completely new territory for me). In Round 16, I was supposed to have 28 purl stitches—okay. Then for Round 17, it says:
6 x (increase 1 stitch, knit 1), 16 purl stitches, 6 x (increase 1 st, knit 1), 40 stitches
I have everything, but not 40 stitches—usually a lot more. I’ve unraveled everything all the way back to round 16 over and over again. If I don’t get any help now, that’s it for my knitting career :-(
I’d be very grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.
Best regards, Kimera
Hi Kimera, welcome to our forum and to the site. If you tell me which pattern you’re referring to or which provider the pattern is from, I’ll ask the provider or designer to help you with your problem. But maybe one of the other pros reading along here can give you a tip too.
my mom gave me a knitting book—*Kuscheltiere selbst gestrickt* by Claire Garland. The project I picked out is on page 10. So, unfortunately, it’s not from the vendors on this site.
I also don’t understand why, in the middle of row 17, I’m suddenly supposed to knit 16 purl stitches.
I thought these cute patterns would really spark my enthusiasm for knitting. And they did—until the part mentioned above.
But maybe a knitting pro reading this can help a newbie like me get back on track. Unfortunately, I’ve only ever knitted straight up so far. My “artistry” hasn’t gone beyond scarves....
Hi Kimera, since I don’t know much about knitting, I’m afraid I can’t give you any advice on this either.
Is there perhaps some kind of support hotline from the publisher that you could call?
Since we have a lot of pros here who read along and also post here, maybe someone else will be able to give you a tip.
I don't know your pattern.
But if I take round 17: 6 x (inc 1 st, k1), p16, 6 x (inc 1 st, k1) 40 sts
then the increase makes sense to me.
For the first 6 stitches, you increase one stitch each time. When I increase stitches, I always knit two stitches out of one stitch, i.e. I knit 1 normal stitch (in your case as a purl stitch) from the front and one twisted knit stitch through the back loop.
So for the first 6 stitches, increase one in each stitch = 12 stitches
then 16 purl stitches = 16 stitches
then again increase one in each of the 6 stitches = 12 stitches
Total therefore 40 stitches
I hope I was able to help you.
Don't despair. When your "little bird" is finished, you'll definitely be very proud of it.
Hi everyone, does anyone know how to read crochet charts? I bought a crochet pattern for a hobby horse, and from round 3 onward it suddenly says: At the end of the second round, I have 20 sc in total. 4 sc, (1 sc, increase once) x3, 4 sc, (1 sc, increase once) x3 (26) 4 sc, (2 sc, increase once) x3, 4 sc, (2 sc, increase once) x3 (32). I don’t understand how I’m supposed to crochet this. I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Tina
