Dear users, dear authors,
we need to have a good, long chat about wool. :-)
What kind of wool do you like? Which kinds aren’t really your thing? What do you use for which projects? What colors do you like?
Tell me all about it.
I mostly knit with Drops yarn, which comes in all kinds of types. But I also enjoy knitting with Finkhof yarn. It’s pretty sturdy.
What’s important to me is natural fiber that’s produced in a way that’s as gentle on animals and the environment as possible.
Cotton is very well suited for sweaters and little dresses, especially for babies and toddlers. For outerwear such as jackets and children’s trousers, I like to knit with merino wool or a good sock yarn.
My favorite colors are red, orange, and yellow - and all their shades. I also find purple very beautiful, and blue or green only in individual cases.
I like to crochet amigurumi or decorations in bright, colorful shades.
Oh yeah, I totally agree with you about wine red and berry tones! Those are my favorites too :-D They look best paired with a light shade of white, gray, or cream
And when it comes to yarn, it all depends on what I want to make:
For amigurumi, a firm cotton yarn like Catania is wonderful—it holds its shape well and comes in all kinds of great colors :-D
For nice, warm winter clothes (scarves, hats, etc.), though, I prefer something softer—and ideally a natural fiber. My go-to is always merino wool; it keeps you nice and warm, is super soft, and is also relatively stretchy.
What I don’t like quite as much is pure acrylic yarn—I’ve had some before that squeaked on the needle, others look kind of “fuzzy” and “messy,” and then there’s one that shines beautifully but is pretty stiff and not stretchy at all. I actually only use it now to try out new patterns.
Recently, though, I noticed that—at least when knitting—it’s a bit softer and more elastic than when crocheting.
Who knows, maybe I’ll find another use for it… ;-)
For amigurumi and similar projects, I also prefer cotton (Catania, etc.)
For shawls and other clothing, I’m currently always using gradient yarn (Bobbel) made of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic.
Colors… hmm… Preferably bright and bold—a gradient that includes everything! But I don’t wear that myself, and I don’t really have anyone who’d want it either.
Still, I don’t want to choose just one color—because I really like them all! :)
Oh, I just love all colors. And I work with all of them, too. There’s a perfect color for everything, and a perfect crochet project for every color.
My current favorite yarn is Bobbel for shawls and scarves. For cozy and colorful blankets, I prefer Versailles—the colors hold up even after washing. That’s really important for motif blankets.
The only thing I don’t like working with is metallic threads. Unfortunately, they give me a rash on my hands. Or rather, the metal always scratches me slightly, and I end up with little blisters. I avoid them whenever I can, but my daughter loves them for little treasures like rings and necklaces because they shimmer so beautifully.
And who can say no to a “Pleeeeease, Mom” with big, wide eyes?
My favorite colors are in the blue-green range, but I also love rose, coral, pink, apricot, and berry tones.
When it comes to the material, it’s important to me that it’s completely itch-free, because my skin is very sensitive. That’s why I really like natural fibers like bamboo or Tencel.
I’m reluctant to use “synthetic fibers,” and when it comes to animal fibers, it’s very important to me that the animals weren’t mistreated for wool production.
“Mulesing” is the key term here—for example, with merino wool from Australia. If you’re not familiar with it, feel free to Google it, but be warned—the images aren’t for the faint of heart.
All colors, all kinds of yarn. That’s why yarn is everywhere :-)
I actually prefer natural fibers, and I don’t really care about the brand. But if something else finds its way into my home, I’ll use it without complaining.
The choice of yarn and color depends on the project. I like almost everything when it comes to colors and yarn.
The one thing I really don’t like is yarn with lurex.
I'm not really that into pink ... although sometimes it looks really good mixed in. I do like yellow, but I can't wear it; it doesn't suit me. Glitter isn't really my thing either.
I'm currently making a lot of things with gradient cakes (Traumgarne), but not exclusively, otherwise it gets boring. Other yarn is allowed to jump out at me too!
