Crocheting a Wedding Dress

Hello, dear community!

Maybe some of you have already heard in the media about a woman who crocheted her own wedding dress last year. There are various articles online about it, for those who didn’t catch the story ;-) .

And I think her dress is soooo enchanting—I’d love to make one too!
The thing is, while I’m very good at crocheting and knitting, I simply can’t manage without patterns. In other words, I always need specific patterns that I can follow step-by-step.

Unfortunately, I can’t find what I’m looking for online—except for those Russian crochet dresses, which are just so great. There are various pattern books by Duplet that you can easily buy on eBay, etc. Of course, these are in Russian.
Yes, I’ve already read that you don’t need to know Russian to follow the patterns, but is that really true?
Do any of you know these books, or maybe have one or two at home?

Or is there a pro here who can help me make my dream a reality?

I’d really appreciate lots of replies :-)

Best regards,
Sybil

Hi... yes, I’d heard about the wedding dress too... gorgeous

Making something like that yourself is an insane amount of work. And writing a pattern for it is even more work.

And I don’t imagine it’s exactly easy to design something that actually fits.

Depending on how much these patterns cost, I’d make a test purchase—maybe you’ll be able to work with them after all.

When’s the wedding?

And one more very important thing: Congratulations on your engagement!

Hi,

I once saw the lead actress wearing a crocheted dress in the movie *The Fast and the Furious* :-) It wasn’t a wedding dress, but it still surprised me.

Best regards, Karo

Hi,

thank you so much to everyone who wrote to me and replied!
The woman with the wedding dress is actually selling a pattern for it online. I’m going to buy it and try to make it. I’ll also try to bring my own ideas to life with the help of some pros here—I’m sure it’ll turn out great.

Thanks also for the congratulations :-) We don’t have a date yet, but it’ll probably take another year—we have plenty of time and specific ideas that aren’t so easy to pull off. It has to be a beach wedding ;-)
I’ve been married before, so I don’t want a traditional wedding dress anymore—I want something unique and personalized.

That means I definitely have plenty of time to put my project into practice :-)

Best regards,
Sybil

I wish you every success and lots of joy with this project. I think the idea is great, and maybe in a year or so we’ll be able to admire the dress here at Crazypatterns. That would be nice!

Best regards
Ingrid

Oh yeah, please! I’d love to see that! Maybe I’ll knit one for myself someday, when the time is right.
I think it’s a really lovely idea :)

I could help you with the translation if you’re having trouble with the pattern.

Hi everyone
I just found an article on current wedding dress trends.
http://www.stylebook.de/fashion/Die-Highlights-von-der-New-York-International-Bridal-Week-634381.html
and it made me think of this thread.
I’m guessing a lot of it can’t be done with a crochet hook—it’s mostly sewn—but the lace details could be crocheted.
Theoretically, could you spruce up a store-bought, ready-made wedding dress with extra crochet details, or is that pretty uncommon?
I think some of the alternatives to the bridal veil are really pretty—butterflies in the hair and stuff like that—but you’ve got to be the type for that. It probably doesn’t suit every bride.
I’m not really a fan of more or less see-through wedding dresses—you know, the ones they call semi-transparent or something like that. But I guess that’s just a matter of taste. I just think a wedding dress shouldn’t look like a nightgown, but nightgown-style wedding dresses are apparently in style. So I’ve missed the trend yet again. ;)
The link includes a photo gallery to click through.
I’m not really a fan of lace, but looking at these, I like the pictures right at the beginning the very best. The ones on the second page—that minimalist look—just aren’t really my thing.
But I still prefer simple wedding dresses to those cream-and-meringue-style dresses with the lavish ruffles and all that, like the one Princess Diana wore at her wedding back then.
I thought Duchess Kate’s dress was very simple, but beautiful to look at. When you marry a prince, the dress has to look the part—that’s certainly not easy, since you have to balance your own wishes with what etiquette demands. I think there was some story about the lace on the dress, but I can’t quite remember it right now.
Well, anyway, that’s not really part of the topic.
This is all about crocheting a wedding dress yourself.

@Sybil
How’s it going with your dress and the pattern? Are you making progress? From what I’ve read, I think we’d all love to know if it’s going well for you. Please tell us more about it. In any case, I wish you the very best of luck with the dress, a wonderful wedding day, and a happy marriage, of course.

Hi everyone,

I finally bought the pattern. I’m more or less working on it. I’m going to redesign it a bit, according to my own ideas ;-)

I’m currently reading up on Irish crochet techniques, which I plan to incorporate into the dress. I’ve already crocheted a few ornaments for it, but it’s very, very labor-intensive and time-consuming...

I still have time, so I’m not going to stress about it :-)

Best regards,
Sybil

Well then, good luck — it’s sure to be beautiful. I’ve also seen crocheted dresses on FB and in Für Sie.

Check out what I found!
A bridal veil and a garter to sew yourself :) I thought this fits the topic perfectly.

I’m “unfortunately” already married, but I think the idea of crocheting your own dress is just beautiful.
I can only recommend finishing the dress well in advance, since the weeks right before my wedding were already incredibly stressful and packed for me. Of course, it’s different if you’re having a small celebration, but even then, I think it’ll be stressful enough.
I’d love to see the finished dress, too. I think the idea is sooo beautiful :)

Thanks so much, Luna.

But I don’t like veils, and I’m not really into all the other bridal stuff either ;-) I’m pretty low-key when it comes to that :-D

I want my own unique dress, if only because I’ve been married before. Back then, I had my dream dress, and it was basically a waste, so now I want something completely my own.

So I’m already familiar with all the wedding stress. But this time, there won’t be any of that :-)
The only stress will be planning and booking the vacation, since we’ll be getting married all by ourselves with the kids, far away from home on a beach.
It’s an all-inclusive wedding package at a gorgeous hotel. Completely stress-free and easy for us :-)

After all, this is supposed to be my last wedding, so I want to make my dream come true this way.

Everyone has their own idea of a dream wedding. Mine is by the sea in a wedding dress I crocheted myself

P.S. For anyone who’s interested: The project is on hold for now because I have to finish up some commissioned work. But I’m not letting it stress me out ;-)

I’ve been following this thread the whole time, but I missed the part about the crocheted wedding dress and would love to see it :-)
Where can I find this dress?
I’d really love to know what you’re all talking about...
Best regards

I actually linked to this exact wedding dress somewhere here on the forum a couple of months ago because I thought it was so great.
It really looks amazing. I really hope the crocheting goes well and that you have a lot of fun with it. It sounds pretty simple in the article—I hope it’s just as easy when you actually crochet it. The pineapple stitch looks quite elegant.
Are you going with a green bow or would you prefer a blue one?
I think it’s perfect for a summer wedding, and compared to store-bought dresses, it’s pretty affordable. Plus, it’s much prettier than store-bought dresses in a similar price range.

@sybilk:
Wooooow!! Honestly, that sounds wonderful :) And I wish you all the best and a wonderful, relaxed wedding :)

The dress is so pretty, and the article about it made me think about how much you can actually make yourself. Pretty much everything! You first have to think of it, even though it’s actually so obvious...

Thanks for the link. Now I understand the excitement here—it’s really awesome.
It would also make a great evening gown in color.

I didn’t know such a wedding dress existed until just now either, but I’d already had the idea for a colorful
evening gown. I crocheted one about 5 years ago. You can see the result here:

Wow, that wedding dress looks really great!!
Hehe, the graphic on the page is brilliant too:

Yarn + hook = dress

It actually sounds so simple (for me, there'd have to be a little extra note in parentheses with something like “reading and understanding crochet charts”)

@Co-Sa
Your evening gown looks gorgeous!!! Respect!

The second one here http://www.stylebook.de/fashion/Die-Highlights-von-der-New-York-International-Bridal-Week-634381.html looks amazing, I think! I can’t even imagine crocheting something like that completely by yourself. I think you really have to be a pro. For my sister, we had a small piece added a bit higher up at the neckline. It was a dress from samyra and it fit perfectly at the sides and in terms of length. But the straps were a little too long. It looked a bit too revealing, so we had a piece crocheted across the top. It looks amazing that way too. I can upload a photo right away

The way I see it, it’s not crocheted at all, but sewn from lace fabric.

Wow... looking at these links, it’s such a shame I’m already married. ;-))))
Although I did at least wear a hand-crocheted stole at my wedding.

@sybilk
If you need more ideas, check out Pinterest. There are lots of links to Russian sites there. They really do still make a lot of things themselves, so there are many more ideas for stitch patterns and lots of patterns as well.

Best regards,
Michaela

I can only agree with selda!! We did something similar too!! My cousin's dress was from samyra, and we had a piece crocheted onto the top of it, and it simply looked so much better on her that way! Also very similar to the one in the middle here in the picture http://www.stylebook.de/fashion/Die-Highlights-von-der-New-York-International-Bridal-Week-634381.html We then also had a kind of veil thing crocheted around the hips, definitely looks very unique too. I can post the dress here in a moment!

Whoa, those dresses you guys shared are cute—I’d recommend Missydress, since they have lots of evening gowns for wedding parties.

Even though I like crafts, a crocheted or knitted wedding dress is not for me.

I started crocheting wedding dresses last year. If anyone’s interested (and doesn’t want to try crocheting themselves), feel free to check it out here:
