Do you have any tips and tricks you could share here?
Let me know.

Aren’t there any tips for beginners?

The first tip for impatient beginners:

PRACTICE PATIENCE!

No, seriously—you should start with small, simple projects to get a feel for the craft.

The classic pot holders are always good practice projects, as are a scarf or an infinity scarf.
The latter, of course, can be made much faster with thick yarn and large needles than with delicate yarn and complicated patterns.

And don’t get discouraged!
Starting out is always hard, and we’ve all cursed plenty, unraveled our work, and tried again—eventually it works out, and you’ll often wonder afterward why you found it so difficult.

If you’re having trouble with your project, you’ve come to the right place, because the friendly authors are happy to help you with any questions or problems you have with their patterns.

I think the information provided to us beginners here at crazypatterns is great, and as a beginner, I have a question. If I want to crochet a pot holder, which stitch would be better to use? Single crochet or double crochet?
I can already do both, but I’ve never actually finished anything—I’ve just made several rows to practice. Now I feel confident enough to try a pot holder, which is why I’m asking this question.

Hi TaBe,

I’m glad you’re enjoying it here!
And I’m glad you’re having fun crocheting!

I’d recommend starting by crocheting a pot holder in single crochet stitches, especially with a thick 100% cotton yarn (as an alternative to thick yarn: use two strands of a thinner cotton yarn).
You could change colors every row or every other row to make it more colorful.
Or, if you’re able to, embroider something in cross-stitch at the end so the pot holder doesn’t look too “boring”...

Or, or, or ;)

Best wishes

Hello TaBe

welcome. I’d crochet the potholder using single crochet stitches and thicker cotton yarn.
Single crochet stitches are denser than double crochet stitches, so you won’t burn your fingers as easily on a hot pot.

Hi Zwergnase and Wollefaden,

first of all, thank you for your answers.

The part about burning the thread is a very good point—I hadn’t even thought of that.
How would changing colors work, though? I haven’t done that yet, and unfortunately, I don’t know how to embroider either. I wanted to focus on improving my crocheting first, and once I’ve got that down, I can always move on to embroidery. ;-)
You know, good things take time. :)

When you reach the end of the row, pull the last loop through with the new color. Make a chain stitch to start the new row, and pull both strands of the different colors tight again.

Then cut the strand of the old color to about 5 cm and crochet this end, along with the beginning of the new color, into the next row.
That way, you’ve saved yourself the trouble of weaving in the ends!

Hi Nadeleule,

thanks for the explanation—I’ll give it a try. Let’s see how well I can pull it off.
Thanks also to everyone else for the friendly replies.

With a little practice, you’ll get the hang of it—I’m sure of it!

Yes, Nadeleule,

that’s definitely true.
I’ve already added a second color, but it doesn’t look as nice as yours yet—though it’s getting better and better. ;-)

As the saying goes: practice makes perfect :)

In the beginning, I only ever crocheted stuffed animals. I remember how I used to pick out small projects at first, and I was sooo proud when they were finished! I’d admire “bigger” projects and always thought, “I’ll never be able to do that.”
Now I have to smile when I see the little animals I made back then. You just learn sooo much along the way, and things I used to think were impossible, I now do almost casually :)

I’m sure your color changes are already great and that they’ll get EVEN better over time! :)
