Sewing for Beginners—What Do You Need to Know or Be Able to Do? Where Do You Start?

Hi everyone,
if you’re a total beginner at sewing, what’s the best way to get started? Do you have any tips?
What was it like for you when you first started sewing? How long ago was that?
What’s typically the very first sewing project? What kinds of challenges do beginners usually face?
I’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to share their thoughts.
Thanks :)

Hello muetzekatz,
I taught myself to sew from scratch about 3 years ago. During that time, a lot ended up in the trash, and the seam ripper was my best friend :). The most important thing is... to think logically and not overcomplicate things :)...You’ll quickly pick up the basics, like the right side of the fabric, the wrong side of the fabric, and seam allowances. You shouldn’t necessarily start with a piece of clothing or a pillowcase - you’ll only get frustrated. In my shop, for example - just in time for the start of spring - there are two Easter bunnies to sew. They’re super easy and an absolute beginner’s project, since you only need basic sewing skills. Draw, cut out, sew together, turn inside out, stuff, close the opening, and your bunny is done :) and you can celebrate your first success. It’s really important to start with very simple (decorative) items. With anything else, mistakes are bound to happen and you’ll lose motivation. Which is a shame. When you’re starting out, you might want to sew with some scrap fabric (an old T-shirt, bedsheet, etc.) and just give it a try before using your nice fabrics. It’s a shame if something doesn’t turn out quite right. But the most important thing is to take your time and have fun with it. Rushing doesn’t work at all :) - just like with everything else.

I hope this helps for now.
Best wishes
Nina

The best thing to do is to first get a book covering the important basics (the one by Burda is very good) or take a beginner’s sewing class. That gives you the best start and helps you learn everything correctly right away, so you don’t get too frustrated when things go wrong at first due to a lack of knowledge. After all, learning to sew is more time-consuming than knitting or crocheting. It’s a craft that involves a lot of new skills. Plus, most sewing patterns are structured in a way that assumes you have basic knowledge. That’s not meant to take the fun out of it—quite the opposite. You can be proud of yourself with every new project, because you’ve learned something new :-)

Good projects for beginners include little animals, monsters (where it’s not so important that they be sewn perfectly), and storage baskets.

I’m a beginner and started with classes. There, I learned the very basics, was with like-minded people, and had a lot of fun, too.
The most important thing for me at first was getting to know a sewing machine. That also helped me buy the right machine for me.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the time right now, but maybe this summer??
Have a nice weekend
Petra

Hi....I started by shortening pants. Then I moved on to bags and pillows. But I hardly had any time to sew. I think you should only start sewing clothes once you’re pretty confident. In any case, it’s important to choose the right fabrics, the right machine, and always remember the seam allowance—is that what it’s called?

I actually thought that as a beginner, you wouldn’t go straight to the sewing machine, but would practise by hand first. Is that not done anymore?

In the beginner’s class, I “sewed” on the sewing machine without any thread. First, we were given a piece of paper with straight lines and zigzag lines drawn on it. We had to sew along those lines!! After that, we moved on to shapes—rectangles, hearts, and so on. The experienced seamstresses among us are probably laughing their heads off, but I found that very helpful.

I assumed you knew how to sew by hand, because it really does make a big difference compared to sewing with a machine.

Hi everyone,
first of all, thank you so much for all the informative and encouraging replies.
So, if I understand correctly, I should start by practicing without a machine and get a book with information on sewing. Once I’ve got the hang of that, I can carefully try using a machine—if I have one. Or I could look for a sewing class for beginners. Who actually offers courses like that? Do I have to Google to see if there’s something like that right around the corner from me?
I really have no idea about sewing machines and wouldn’t even know which one to buy.
Once you’ve mastered the basics of using a sewing machine, you should start with small decorative projects and ideally use older fabric or fabric scraps before you go out and buy fancy fabric. Okay, that makes sense so far.

Could we also compile some more beginner tips here in this thread?
For example, do you have any tips for threading the needle by hand more easily? Yeah, I know—this might be a bit too beginner-level for people who sew at a professional level.
But if the thread is frayed at the end, I sometimes have a hard time with it. I either trim a little bit off the thread so there’s a smooth cut edge, or I twist the thread together somehow. My sewing kit also includes a needle threader, but I just can’t seem to get the hang of it.
Do you have any tips or suggestions?

Do pros actually use a thimble when sewing by hand, or do they not need one because they know how to handle the needle—or do pros just not feel any pain? ;) I’m just asking because I tend to prick myself with the needle every now and then.

I wish you all happy sewing and would love to hear more answers and tips.
