Dear users, dear authors,
when you read through the current forum game, you might get the idea that craft enthusiasts can certainly create quite a lot of stress for themselves. Would you like to tell me something about that?
Haha, yeah, checking in here at least once a day is a must—even if just lying around would be so much better! And sometimes there’s just so much to read that it’s hard to keep up.
Well, a lively forum is always better than a quiet one.
When there’s more going on, there’s likely a topic that appeals to every reader. I work very hard to make sure there’s always something happening here. It might not look like “much,” but community management (the term for moderating forums and editorial oversight) is definitely a science in its own right. I didn’t take your post as criticism; I’m just explaining this because most people don’t realize that it takes a lot of work to keep a forum running.
You can pick out the unread topics you like and mark the rest as read. They’ll then be removed from the list of unread topics. Have you tried this feature yet?
But I totally agree with you—checking in on CP once a day is a must, of course. :- ) Otherwise, you’ll miss out on the latest news, the highlights, the chats, the progress of other users and authors, the suggestions, and so on. :- )
Yeah, I’ve seen that feature before. Another thing I’ve noticed with the unread threads is that sometimes I want to save some to read later because I don’t have much time right now, but if I wait too long, they suddenly disappear. So they no longer show up as unread. Is it possible that this happens after 24 hours?
Nope, that happens when the post limit—which, by the way, you can set individually—has been exceeded. You can change that here:

Right at the top, it says “Unread Posts.” You can increase the number there. I have it set to 500.
In any case, crafting definitely shapes my daily life. That said, I try very hard not to let it get out of hand. Since it’s my profession, crafting inevitably shapes my daily life—much like how bread shapes a baker’s daily life. In the mornings, I have set “office hours” when I take care of paperwork and correspondence; in the afternoons, I usually take time off to do something completely different; and in the evenings, I either knit or crochet or write patterns.
I really only want to knit and crochet in the evening so that it remains the relaxing hobby it’s always been. Because that’s what crafting really is for me: relaxing, meditative, two needles to hold on to.
But if you look around our home, it’s actually obvious that crafting plays a major role here.
Unfortunately, I don’t always manage to do that. Sometimes I really want to crochet during the day because the light is better for photos. And then I don’t get around to it because something else is just more important at the moment. Then I often stress myself out because I didn’t manage to do what I’d set out to do.
I pick up my crochet hook or knitting needles whenever I feel like it.
I don’t really pay much attention to the time of day.
I often take my projects with me—unless they’re a) too big or b) involve too much writing to tackle while I’m out and about.
The one thing I’ve set aside for the morning hours is editing work for the books.
That’s when I have the peace and quiet I need for it.
That’s a great topic—thanks for bringing it up, dear Josefa :-)
Well, in addition to my everyday life as a mom, wife, and dog owner, I also have two other jobs.
That means stress—not necessarily always a bad thing—is as much a part of my daily life as my morning coffee.
I often find—I don’t know if it’s the same for you—that I put pressure on myself and get frustrated that my day only has 24 hours—and that really drains a lot of energy...
Like a hamster on a wheel, right? And then you look at the clock and wonder where the day went.
But there’s one thing you have to hold onto when you turn your hobby into a career: it has to stay a passion! And that’s definitely the case for me—I pick up my needles and feel myself relax right away!
One more thing comes to mind: I catch myself ALL day long—whether I’m at the office, in my shop, shopping, walking the dog, picking up from school, watching TV shows, or, or, or…—my brain automatically churns through ideas—I see a color, a sweater… and suddenly my mind is racing!
And if I don’t have a chance to take notes, it stresses me out because I get annoyed when I forget the idea.
I mean, my notebooks (countless by now) are bursting with scribbled-on receipts and newspaper clippings that I’ve colored in *hahaha*—there are so many ideas, one lifetime isn’t enough anyway ;-)
I think the magic word is “slowing down”—just consciously sit back and enjoy life!
(Preferably with a needle in hand)
With that in mind, have a pleasantly busy week, everyone ;-)
For me, crocheting is total relaxation—when I was annoyed by work, I crocheted; when my husband is being annoying, I reach for my crochet hook. :-)
Now that I’m a mom, I don’t get to crochet as much, but I usually still manage it in the evenings.
For me, it really is just a hobby.
What’s stressing me out at the moment:
My dark blue won’t be enough, and it’s currently unavailable. I don’t need it yet. But there are only 9 rounds left, then I’ll need my blue.
