Hi,
I’m new here. I’m a beginner when it comes to crocheting (but at least I have quite a bit of knitting experience ;-) ). And here’s the thing—I’ve never worked with a Bobbel before :-) In principle, I get the idea—the color change just sneaks in. But somehow, I think I’m having a bit of trouble understanding it.
For example, if I just want to crochet something small, like wrist warmers or something, won’t I end up not using all the colors in the Bobbel? Or will I end up with two different-colored ones?
And what if I’m making something big that uses a lot of yarn? Then I’ll probably have to start a second Bobbel at some point, and the color gradient will be completely different—or will it just start over from the beginning? But I’ve never seen anything in the finished photos here that looks like it might be made from two Bobbels. Do they come in every size—that is, every length? Or do you really just piece them together?
Thanks so much, and have a nice evening

Hello, namesake (or would that be “name cousin”?).
Well, there are also specialized yarn winders who offer small cakes for things like arm warmers, for example. You just need to tell them how many meters you need for it. In general, though, small items like that won’t work with huge gradients and lots of colors.
For very large projects, you can also specify the required meterage when ordering online. If you’re buying from one of the “smaller” yarn winders rather than a mass manufacturer, basically any meterage is possible. And if she’s a good yarn winder, she’ll advise you as well.
Depending on what I want to make, I use different-sized yarn cakes.
It’s also possible that I use two of the same size and work them from opposite ends—that is, I continue with the color where I left off.
Ah, thank you both. So, only buy those often-advertised 1000m Bobbels if you actually need 1000m. Or if you can just keep crocheting as long as you like, or stop at any time. Or if you always have a few projects in mind, including the required yardage ;-)
As the lovely people above have already written, there are great yarn winders who can also make the right one for you if you message them. But if you have a larger ball of yarn, you can also work with the tweezer grip. It’s great. I have a video on Facebook and YouTube showing how it works. That way you get all the colors in, and the yarn is also thicker.
