Crocheting hats—why are hats so popular, anyway? The hat thread :)

Hello everyone here in the thread, at your computers at home, and of course to all the cell phone users too :)

I just wanted to ask—why are hats so incredibly popular in the DIY world? Even here on CP, there are tons of hat patterns covering all kinds of crafting techniques. Is it because hats are—relatively speaking—easy to crochet once you’ve learned the magic ring, slip stitches, chain stitches, single crochet, double crochet, and, if needed, color changes and spirals? You might have noticed—I’ve been looking at a ton of hat patterns and hat videos lately, and they always list all the techniques you need, so I can just rattle them off like that. :)
Of course, I don’t know how it works with knitted hats or knooked hats. Are there options for beginners there, too? Sewing hats isn’t really for beginners, is it, or am I wrong about that?
Can you actually felt hats, too—like in the washing machine? Or is that more of a thing for shoes?

I kind of intuitively thought that amigurumi would be more popular than hats. I mean, especially among beginners right now.
But especially those kids’ and baby hats with owls and bears in the shop—they’re so cute. And then there are the ones with pom-poms, ear flaps, decorations, and little flowers. I’m too old for that kind of thing, and I don’t have any kids to crochet for, but if I did, I’d definitely give it a try.

What do you guys think about hats?
Well, as you might have noticed, I kind of need to talk this through—if anyone feels this applies to them and wants to join the discussion, I’d really appreciate it.

besides, hats are totally in right now, and there are practically endless variations—romantic, sporty, playful. Pretty much everyone can use a hat. These days, it’s not just when it’s cold or for skiing anymore.

As for whether there are also beginner-friendly patterns for knooking, I can say yes! Most of the time, they’re simply knooked in knit stitch! My knooking crochet hat, for example, is a great beginner project!

As for felting: yes, you can also felt knitted or crocheted hats and hats really well! These pieces are, of course, more compact and sturdier than knitted or crocheted items.

I love trying out new hats again and again; it’s similar to shoes - with them, you can keep reinventing your style!

everyone needs hats—and several of them, at that. Plus, you have different jackets and such where you need hats in different colors. There are so many beautiful patterns, too...*swoon*.
Kids always need a new hat as they grow, and they’re always changing their minds about what they want it to look like.
Right now, I’m also crocheting a baby hat for a friend. It’s cute, comes from the heart, and will be needed.

what do you actually need to keep in mind with a baby hat, aside from making sure it’s the right size and that the yarn isn’t too fuzzy?

Hi. Make sure there’s nothing attached that could be swallowed, and for baby hats, I don’t add any ties for fastening or anything like that. Best, Nicole
